IN the only speech General Shoridan ever made, he declared that ho should never do anything to mako rebellion honorable. That is just tho spirit noeded just now. The issue is, shall loyalty or treason bo honored and protected
A CONDUCTOR of a newspaper, speaking of a eoteniporary, says "He was formerly a member of Congress, but rapidly roso till he obtained a roepeetable position as an editor, a noble exnmplo of perseverance under depressing circumstances."
TnK Pro?ident thiBks that the recent elections show that the people indorse his policy. Either ho is too stupid or tho people are too versatile to respect him. Last year his policy was the direct issue, and it was universally condemned iti tho reliably loyal State?. This year his policy wa9 not thought of.
IT is reported that some of the leading Democratic politicians of the country have written to General McClellan to return home, as it is proposed to make him tho Democratic candidate.for tho Presidency. But McClellan has surely 1 ud enough in that lino, isnd will probably not roturn home 30on oti an invitation of 1hat character.
JUPQK MCCANDLKSS, of tlie United States District Court of Pennsylvania has decided that in bankruptcy cases tho Federal omrts have not the power to restrain by injunction any nttion of State courts in such cases. The JuJgo intimates that the power should be bestowed at the next session of Congress, in order to mako tho general bankrupt law effective.
Ilovr unfortunate the South is in its literature. They had a very pleasing poet, a young man of very gentle nature, Mr. Ilenry Tim rod, who lately died at Charleston. A Southern admirer has published so bombastic and fulsome a bio graphical sketch that the critics are laughing at both the biographer and the genius of the unfortunato victim.
GKNKRAL SHERMIN'S Indian Commission has offered the red people permanent homes and an immo-.liate prospect of improving their condition if they will lay down their arms. The savages have taken the matter into consideration, hnd until their answer is returned, they promised to refrain from all outrages, and have faith* fully kept their promise. There is no doubt that fair dealing would secure peace with that degenerate raco.
DURING the late canvass Pennsylvania was flooded with tracts extolling Judge Sharswood as a supporter-of the war, and claiming that he did not decide that greenbacks were unconstitutional, and that he was considered one of the Union party during the war. This accounts for his election. His maj rity, however, is not alarming to the Republican party, since there were over 2G,000 Republicans and 10,000 Democrats who did not vote. It will be ail right next year. Stand from under.

WHISKEY FRAUDS.
The World's Washington special says Treasury Department officials are on the track of some great frauds in whisky, in New York and elsewhere, and special agents have been quietlj dispatched to work up the evidence. Great secresy is observed, but there are reaBons to believe two important frauds have been perpetrated since the new regulations went into effect, and that they will soon receive attention from the officials. One of these two, ship from the West to New York, spirits of much higher proof than are called for in the permits and bills of landing. The other, for collections in collusion with fraudulent shippors, to concede and ultimately destroy the brands given for transportation from one district to another. Some of tho largest manipulators in both sections of the country have been quietly watched for a few weeks past, and a trap prepared for them, into which they have almost fallen.
A delegation of Hungry whiskyites is here urging tbo removal of Commissioner Rollins, on the ground of corruption.
