I KNOW A BANK.
I know a bank—not one that nature decks Clothed—not in greenery oh, no—in checks 1 O'er it no perfume balmy cyphers waftIts scents are five per cents., its airs are drafts I No wild thyme wanders .this bank freely o'er Its hours are regular from ten till four. Fairer than slopes with pallid primrose seti Or rich with clumps of nodding violet, Bicher than mossy banks or shady bowers, Or sunny gardens bright with myriad flowers, Or bounteous glade, or green and level lawn Stay, my account must not bo overdrawn.
Proverbial Philosopy. ft
From the New York Evening Oaseite.
I desire to show your readers how it is that intensej humbngeous person, Martin Farquhar Tupper, construct* his "Proverbial Philosophy," in "chunks of wisdom," and I desire to jjiye you a few specimens, "made out of my own head." 2'he
modus operandi
thus: Take the
simplest and moat common maxim and spread it out by the use of the longest and most high sounding words you can find, always bearing in mind the profundity of language is "compounded of many simples," and to "cover a large piece of bread with a small piece of butter" is .the true Tupperian practice.
Partake of a few samples with originals prefixed: "Accidents will happen in the best of families."
Disasters will eventuate, even in households of the supremest integrity. "A nod is as good as a wink to a horse that is not blind."
An abrupt inclination of the head is equivalent to a contraction of.the eye to a steed untroubled with obliquity of vision. "He looks two ways for Sunday." "By reason of the adverse disposition of Lis optics—a natural defect—he is forced to scrutinize in duple directions forth Christian Sabbath." "Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
The culinary adornments which suffice for the female of the race
amer,
may be
relished also with the masculine adult of the same species. .. "Go to tho Devil and shake yourself."
Proceed to the arch-enemy of man, and agitate your person. "Nona so deaf as those that wont hear .'
No person are obtuse in their auricular apprehension equal to thoae who repudiate vecal incomes by adverse inclination "Put a beggar on horseback and he will ride to the Devil.
Establish a medicant on the uppermost section of a charger, and he will transport himself to Apolyon. "The least said thejleaet mended."
The minimum of offensive remark as cobbled with the greatest magnitude. "A stich in time saves nine."
The first impression-of a needle upon an abrasion obviatoty a nine-fold introduction. "Tis an ill wind that blows nobody good."
That pale is truly diseased which puffeth benefaction to nonentity. "Who sees a pin, and lets it lay may want a pin another day,"
Whose surveys with unconsern the most common, lost or discarded untensil, in divers diurnal use, and secures is not, may chance to yearn after it at a subsequent period. "Dont count your chickens before they are hatched."
Enumerate not your adolecent pullets ere they cease to be oviform. "Tis a wise child that knows his own father."
The juvenile individual is indeed sage who possesses authentic information with respect to the indentity of his paternal derivation. "There is no accounting for tastes."
The propensities of the. palate defy jurisdiction, "Th:93 removes are as bad a3 a fire."
The triple transmission of a household, with chattel from one domicil to another is as vicious as a conflagration.
There! I want to know whether these specimens are not as sensible and felicitous as any of Mr. Tupper's examples of "Proverbial Philosophy?"
DESPERATE FIG1IT GRIZZLY.

A Wisconsin Sergeant In Montana Gets Enough of Bear-Kllllng, and the Bear sets too Much.
A correspondent of the Helena (Montana) Gazette, writing from Camp Green Clay Smith, near the Yellowstone, gives the following thrilling account of a bear fight:
Orderly Sergeant R. S. Shroke, of company E. Captain Campbell, formerly of Monroe, Wisconsin, having been in Montana something less than a year, though he must needs signalize his montain life by dispatching, single-handed, a huge grizzly. Accordingly, on tbe 5th inst., when out hunting, being about 50 miles from this camp, on the eastern branch of the Powder, the opportunity waa embraced to do so.
Leisurely proceeding* on his way, his tranquslity of mind was suddenly disturb ed by looking up and seeing a bear just ahead of him. The eyes met simultaneously bruin's vengefully glaring. Tbe sergeants halted, and, cocking his piece, the bear came right on, as if, understanding manouvre, he would shbw contemptuously he regarded it. But the sergeant, equally deflnant—and prudence* perhaps, lost sight of in the ambition which a morjority of those recently from the East have to-kill a gristly while in tht mountains— leveled his rifts and £red, just as'his savage foe reared on his hind legs to
«1om
with him. His bullet struck clos4* tor ifit did. not penetrate, the heart. The bear fell. Regaining his feet, with a fierc6 terrible growl, he wheeled and endeavored to escape. Calling to his companion who was probably 150 yards in the rear, to come quickly to him, upon his arrival they pursued the animal together. When within twenty yards, the sergeant having reloaded, again fired, and tninks he shot the bear well "up on the shoulder, and about midway of the body his companion immediately succeeded with his bullet, planting a good ounce of lead in one of tbe huge beast's shoulders. "Bruin now turned upon and pursued his foes. They stood their ground, and IHien Sorgt. Shroke had reloaded, the bear was within ten feet of him, coming with unabated speed. He leveled whisn he almost imagined he could feel the mon ster's hot breath in his face. Tbe trigger is pulled—the percussion proves faulty, with the undischarged gun in his hand, a powerful blow, of the infurated grizzly carries away the greater part of his scalp. Before reaching tho ground the bear has caught in his mouth his left hand, and the jaws of his teeth met among its cords and sinews. Tbe sergeant sinks to the
fround
beneath the shaggy giant, whose old on his hand is still unrelaxed when his companion reaches the spot and sends a bullet into the beast's head. Stunned but still having murderous vitality, the bear rolls over on his back, and his red tongue again protrudes from his mouth to once more close on the sergeant. Quick as thought the sergeant thrust his right hand down the animal's throat and fiercely grasped his tongue. Hi3 companion has reloaded his piece and puts a third builet in tbe bear's head. Again the bear withdrew his ivories, and catching in his mouth tho sergeant's gun commenced vigorously chewing off the stock. Now, regaining his feet, the sergeant discharged two bullets from his revolver. These ended the contest with the death of the bear. The sergeant returned to camp in indiscribable agony, and, though still suffering with great pain, he is in a fair way of speedy recovery but he will carry to his last moment the scars of this desperate adventure. He says he "has killed the bar, and don't want nothin, more to do with the critters."
THE BOBTO OF THE HORSE.
A poor old itage-horse, lank and thin, Xot much else but bones and skin, I jog along, week out, week in, Kicked, and cursed, and meanly fed, Jammed in the side and jerked by the head—' And the thing I can't at all make out '. Is, what on earth it's all about .v

Why was I made to toil and tug 1 .j' For this odd little human bug, ... Two-legged, dumpy as a jug, Who sits aloft my Hbs to batter— Or why was he made for that matter And, if I iieeds must be created, Why is it that I was not fated .1 To prance and curvet, finely mated. Silver-harnessed, sleek and fat, With groom and blanket, and all that
Here I go, day after day, Pounding and slipping down Broadway, Dragging these curious biped things, With fore legs gone, and yet no wings— Where they all go to I don't know, Nor why in the world they hurry so, Nor what good nse Heaven puts them to
It wasn't my fault, you see, at all, That my joints grew big, and my muscles small, And so missed of a rich man's stall. clumsy, crooked, stupid, slow, Yet the meanest horse is a horse, you know. And his ribs can ache with tbe kick or blow, As well as the glossiest nags that go. O, Lord, how long will they use me so And when may the equine spirit go Where glorified horses stand in a row, Switching their bright tails to and fro, Careless of either wheel or whoa— Where oata are always apropos, And flies don't grow— Oh, no! 0!
