Greeley's Account of the Publication of tbe New Torker—The Horrors of Being In Debt. I from Grfieley'e "Recollection of a Busy ^f®«" published in the New York Ledger.]

We issued, (March 22, 1834,) without premonitory sound or trumpet,' New Yorker, a large, fair and cbuap weekly, folio, (afterward changed to double quarto.) devoted mainly to curreflt literature, but giving regularly a digest of all important news, including a carelul exhibit and summary of election returns and other political intelligence. I edi£pd and made up this paper, while my partner took charge of our more profitable jobbing business.

The New Yorker was issued under my Eupervision, its editorials written, its'selection made, for the most part, by me, for seveu years and a half from tbe date first giv^n. Though not calculated: to enlut partisanship or excite enthusiasm, it was at length extensively liked and read. It began with scarcely a dozen sabsenbans I these steadily increased to nine thousand and it might, under better business management, (perhaps I should add, at a more favorable time,) have proved profitable and permanent. That it did not, was mainly owing to these circumstances: 1". Tbfit it was not extensively advertised at the autrt, and at least annually thereafter, as it should have been 2. It was never really published, though it had half a doz^n nominal publishers in succession 3 li, was sent to subscribers on credit, and a large share of them never paid for it aid r.ever will, while the cost of collection from others ato up the proceeds 4. The machinery of fjews companies news offices, expresses, &e, whereby literary periodicals are now mainly disseminata! did not ther^ exist. I believe that jus' such a paper, ssued~toc!n j, proper]} publi-iied and advertised, would obtain a circulation of one hundred thousand in less ti :ie than was required to give the New Yorker less than tithe of that aggrerjue. and would rutika money for its owners insteid of nearly starving them,as mine di i. I was worth at least $1,50® when it was started I _W0rked hard and live I frugally throughout its existence it sub*i-ted for the first two years on tho profits of our jobbing business when dcte.i'irig it established, dissolved with my partner, he taking tho jobbing business, aud I the New Yorker, which hell its own pretty fairly thenceforth till the com murcml revulsion of 1837 swept over the land, whelming it and me in the general ruin. I hud married in 1836 (July 5,) deeming myself worth $5,000, and the master of a business which would thenceforth iuld me for my labor at least $1,000 per annum but, instead of that, or an incrc-.so at all, I found myeelf obligee throughout 1837, to confront a net loss.of about $100 per week-^-my income ttvpra gin- $100, and my inevitable expenses $200. It was in vain that I appealed to delinquents to pay up many of them mi gr ued some died others wore so consid erate as to order the paper stopped, but very few of these paid and I struggled on against steadily rising tide of adver sity taut might have appalled a stouter beiiri.. Often did I call on this or that friend with intent to solicit a small loan to ruejt some demand that could no long er be postponed nor evaded, anc| after was ing a precious hour, leave him, uttor ly unatilo to broach the loathsome topic

Ih ivo borrowed $500 of a broker late on Saturday, and paid him $5 for tho use of it till Monday morning, when I some how contrived to return it. Most gladly would I have terminated the struggle, but, iC I had to pay my notes continually falling due, I must havo paid money for my weekly supply of paper—so that would have availed nothing. To havo stopped my journal (for I could not give it a way) would have left me in debt, be side tny notes for paper, from fifty cent? to two dollars each, to at least three thou sand subscribers who had paid in advance and that is tho Worst kind of bankruptcy. If any one would have taken my business and debts off my hands, upon my giving him my nolo for $2,000 I would havo jumped at the chance, and tried to work out the debt by setting type, if nothing b-tter offered. If it bo suggested that my whole indebtedness was at no time more th:.n 5)5,000 to 7,000, I havo only to to say thai uven $1,000 of debt is ruiin to him who keenly tools his obligation to fulfil every engagement, yet is utterly without the mauns of so-doing, and who sees himsuif dragged each week a little deeper into hopeless insolvency. To bo hungry, rugged, and penniless, is not pleasant but this is nothing to the horror of bankruptcy. All tho wealth of the Rothschilds would be a poor recompense for a five year's struggle, with the conseiousnoss that you had taken the money or proper ty ot' trusting friends—promising to return or pay for it when required, and had betrayed their confidence through in solvency.

I dwell on this point, for I would deter others from entering that place of torment. Half the young men in the coun.. try, with many old enough to know better would go into business''—that is, into debt—to-morrow, if they could. Most poar men are so ignorant as to envy the merchant or manufacturer whoso life is an incotSiint struggle with pecuniary diffiulties who is driven to constant "sliinnins ," and who, Irom month to month buroly evades that insolvency which sooner or Utcr overtakes most men in business so that it has been computed that but one in twenty of them achievo a pecuniary success. For my own part—and I speak from end experience—I would rather bo r. convict in State prison, a slave in a rice sn-Mup, than to pass through life under tho hiirivW ot debt. Let no young.man misju igr tuelf unfortunate, or truly, poor, goloiig a? ho has tho full use of his limbs an faculties, and is substantially free frur. debt. Hunger, cold, rags, hard \vor, contempt, suspicion, unjust rep:ou.h, are d.sagreable, but d«bt is iufiniU'iy w.irse than them all.

Ami, if it had pleased God to spare eit'i. or all of my sons, to bo tho suport r.n.l solace of my declining years, the nv -. r. hieh. I should have most earnostly ?.v, h: to impress upon them i9—"Novor run int.» a.'btl Avoid pecuniary obligatio •. v.s yen would pestilence or famine If" '.i ivo but fifty cents, and can get no ai r. f, a week, buy a peck of corn, puu '.i it Mid live on it, rather than owe any in-in a dollar?" Of «ourse, I know tti .: .--ouio men must do business that in* vo-vos ri-l s, and must often give notes fiiui i!ti:ir obligations, and I do not consid. lr.it! really in debt who can lay his ha «directly on tke moans of paying, at so'. -e !ntie sacrifice, nil he owes I speak of vil debt—that which involves risk or s.u ••-tices on the one side, obligation and do en lonco on the other—and I say, from all such, let every youth humbly pray Gift to preserve biin evermore. iifn at length I stopped the New Yorker (So, t-mber "20 1S41), though poor enougn, 1 provided for making good all I wed to its subscribers who had paid in advaace, and sliut up the books, whereon wer-." inscribed some ten thousand dollars owed me, in sums of from one to ten dollars scb, by men to whose service I had faiihiuiiy devoted tho best years of my life years that though full of labor and frugil care, might have been happy had they net been made wretched by those men's dishonesty. They took my journal, and probably road it they promised to pay tor it and defaulted, leaving me to pay my paper-maker, type founder, journoymeu, Ac., as I could. My only requital was a son-iy achieved, but wholesome, lessou. I had been thoroughly burned out, only saving my books, in the great Ann street fire, August 12, 1835. 1

had been an eye-sore and a reminder of evil days whenever I stumbted^POQ tbem, were at length "dissolved in smoke and flame, and lost to sight forever.

Chairman of County Committee, County. Dear Sir*' The necessity for close attention to details in this contest is rnoi-t apparent It is -comparatively noiseless, but it &b-'uld bo iriade full of activity".

The great end to be accomplished is: To poll every Democra icvo'e. The first thing to bo dona is to learn tbe intmos of all the Democrats and doubtful men. For this purpose the blac.ks were furnished you, and so far. as you have returned to ma the lists, I to-day send you copies by mail. Send the remainder us rapidly as possible.

These lists are to be placed in tbe hands of active en in the districts I indorse in each hst

Grinnel, loWa, Oct. 8, 1867.

Dear Sik: To-night our political work for tho. canvass closes. -There will be a light vote, but tho distraction of the enemy will prove jLhat Iowa is as.radically right as any State in the Union. Set us down for 25,000 majority and a Legislature strong enough.

During the canvass I havo marked the molding of sentiment in reference to onr next President. There is an earnest feel ing. Iowa, as well as most of our radical States, could furnish a candidate, and, if practicable, I shou!d be glad to have some of the pioneers in bur righteous cause put forward. What of Gen. .Grant? they asked. For one, I do not share in the distrust so.often expressed. If men will mention his blunders, it will not be for--gotten that his successes were niany and glorious, v. Andvhqw tnodeiU I can never forget how, untiring he was in Washing ton, last winter, iri deVotion to Gen. Sheridan, both at the- CupUal and at his own htnistfl HiS wirn? approval of Mr. Stanton as War Minister was a just tribute, and evinced boldness in the presence of His Accidency, "A. J." But how do you know he is right? thousands ask.

It is to bo remembered that he is not a talking man, and that he regards himself as properly a doer and in tho service of the country, ratber than attached to atiy party but I have, not tho remotest idea that he will be "our candidate if notat some time pronounced emphatically ag with us. I read the flashing of hid eye with delight at the last session, listening to such speech as that of Governor JBoutwell. He came on our side, and I never saw^him on the other, nor did the Democrats extend him salutations. To my knowledge, he was in deep sympathy with General. Howard in his plans and administration. Ho did not fight to save slavery, add when it was dead he joined Congress in the wish that impartial jus-, tice might bo secured, which was a certain condition of power and national prosperity.

Do'not, my dear sir, overlook the fact that Democrats like Vallandigham charge that ho took shelter in a house, and that General Lee—their evil head—was in tho front.

In the halts of Congreis, whonwe

chcered his victories, they were silent. Their press had no good word for him, and their voters declare if you take him you will "catch ti Tartar,'1 and their attempts at "damning with faint praise" suits me.

I could give you many incidents and facts, if proper, which you would regard as good testimony.

We must be sure of our man, andkve shall unito on the candidate whose invuie shall be a towor of strength.

G^rteral Grant hitSTno vulgarity about him. Ho has evinced marked good sense in h« administrative position. He is magnanimous, jind, I think, will be fair and just. It y.U. wquuo a piaster builder at tho heaif of bur'nation after thjj destruction of the war and the mal-adminis-tration of htm .who is making treason hbhorable, «nd has confirmed the proverb, "Put a beggar on horseback and he will ndo to. the devil." ,,

Ever And truly yonra, J. B. Grinnell.

Mr. Grinnell and Gen. Grant. Congressman Grinnell, oftilowa, is a Radical. Thercforo his views in regard to Gan. Grant's .position will ba beard with interest. These are expressed it) tbe following private letter:

the wharf. He went to flftpet "Mr. Astor, I am sorry to see' yotf this morning. I will send a check of $1,000 round to your counting.room if yoa will go and stay there until after this sale." Without thinking much About Astor consented, aAd saicJ'jto StI chant: "Send round your check,

made $1,000 and lost five thousand, but he kept his word. Soma time ago some parties tried, slyly, to hire, the Astor House over the heads of the Stetsons. These men had a private inter view with William B. Astor, and wanted to know his terms. "I will consult Mr. Stetson and let you know,", he said. I always give my old tenants the prefer-• cnce.': To consult Mr.StetsoaiiW*s-to defeat the object the parties had, ia«d they pursued the matter no further. Stewards, success does not proceed from the fact that every variety of article- can be purchased at his store, but from this, that every article is found to be what it is represented to be. Nobody asks a guarantee of Peter Cooper that he will not cheat in the commodity which be sells. Youn^g America panting for»fortune and honor,* would do well to study the business characteristic of tbe old school merchants whose ranks are daily thinned by death.
