The -.Loose Women at Baden Baden and Their Stains There. [From Geo, Wilkes' flerrespondenoe Spirit of the

Times]

The band, whose swell has reached us in the clouds, intoxicated the ear with the most ravishing execution while sitting around in dreamy languor, or promenading up and down through the sparkling avenues was an assemblage of some fifteen hundred to two thousand persons, which comprised, perhaps a large number of splendidly dressed woman than could be collected together at any other summer resort in Europe. I say woman, for the most brilliant of those who sparkled in the throng were not la* dies of society, but were of that wondrous class known as the demi monde whose position may be familiarly conveyed to an American appreciation as that of society "on the half-shell." These dazzling creatures are the pendants which hung from the necks of an idle, pampered, and enormously wealthy aristocracy, who, being indifferent to public opinion, because forgiven for any thing they, do, actually succeed in imparting to these woman a portion of tho toleration and prestige which attaches to themselves.

Tbe demi-monde represent, not tbe affections of these men, but only their prodigality and the result is an exhibition on their part of costliness of toilet, which the wealthiest ladies of society sigh in vain to follow. Many a dress trails over these gravel paths which could not have cost less than twenty thousand francs, and a robe which bursts in the morning with all the glory of a fresh1 petunia, is often forever cast aside at night because touched, perhaps, by a passing shower, or blemished by a goblet of champagne or if the beauty who has worn it does not fancy the brilliant sheen after-a single wearing, it meets with precisely the same fate. The men who keep this thirfg up do not appear to be in the least appalled by the expense. They seen rather to consider it to be a necessary concomitant to their position in the world of fashion. As you look on, one will be pointed out to you as the associate of the iuke of another will be indicated as the attache of the Prince M—rj_ another as the favorite of the Grand Duke of another as the lady of Mustapha, more familiarly known here as the Pasha, because the brother of the Viceroy of Egypt. There are also mahy of these glittering witches who are not attaohed to anyone, but who, flourishing on the results of previous campaigns, are now jpoising themselves upoa their wings for a new Btribe. These have come from Paris, Munich, Berlin or Vienna, or some other of the great capitals of the Continent, to enjoy the festivities of tho ftfce-week, and to indulge in the public gaming, which is now only to be enjoyed at tbe German wells.

Baden of late years has become their favorite summer resort. At present it is high carnival with them, and the very air itself seems to have been turned loose with butterflies. Old habitues of the place tell me there has never been a season so brilliant in this way as thu present, and they add that, as its gaiety has of late been constantly increasing the probability is that the fashion and revelry of this year will be increased by the next. It seems to me, however, that Baden might be well content by stopping where it is, for verily it contains already all that was dreamed of by John Bunyan in Vanity Fair. Among the notables of this class who are here, and may be mentioned as having acquired a quasi-historic position in the immortal annals of the age, are the famous Cora Pearl, De Sieges, Soubise, Mrs. Colonel Wyndham, &c., each of them models of audacity and elegance, and all of whotii are 90 far from striking observation in consequonce of their equivocal position, that they seem to be proud of the distinction it confers. Indeed their position is not at alt equivocal, lor they are openly walked by thair noble entertainers while the studious attention which reputable ladies devote to the observation of their capricious toilettes iias as they know installe them as the archi ters of fashion. It is difficult for those who have not seen these anomalous creatures to amagine that to be the case nevertheless, it is the case, and hence they feel that in the present artificial condition of society, they have a positive authority and useful mission of their* own.

I have heard it statedjthat even the Empress Eugenie is often obliged, to follow their lead in this way of exquisite attire and, having had my wonder so extremely taxed bj looking on, I can very readily believe it. It may be though that I dwell too largely upon a subject which as solemuly ignored by American society, but life at Baden can not be alluded to without placing the demimonde in the foreground and so long as American ladies and gentleman, in Europe make Baden their fa vorite resort after leaving Paris all of its features are worthy of American report. Indeed, tho American ladies here seem to devote more of their attention to tbe demimonde then to anv thing olse, and so also do the traveling tilnglish and the French. Of course ladies do not attempt to vie with them in dress, but they devotedly look on and learn with an unfailing instinct every thing about them. It wai from American ladies" dresses, and acqvired the theory by which they have dragooned the world of fashion.

Two gentlemen were Convening about wealth, when one observed, "I don't care to be rich, but I would like enough so that I could live on four per cent, of my property." "Well,"said the other,1*1! am not so ambitious I should be satis&ed with sufficient for two per cent, to main» taia me."

SO&J

From the New York Hail.] Is it excusable under any circumstances to step on a lady's dress Excusable, we mean, according to the laws of etiquette If0 .lady will claim, we presume, that a mere matter of justice between man and man, or rather between man and woman, that there is any absolute crime involvet. in tho act of stepping upon a .trail in crowded church aisle, for instance, or in a drawing-room. Tbe argument, when it comes to a matter of practical justice^ very Btrongly in favor of the gentleman provided it be proven that the accident is not a matter of pure carelessness We ask the question purely in its relation to etiquette, however. Is a gentleman ever excusable for stepping upon a ladies' dress? Can he, under certain circumstances, apologise, bow, smile, say he is sorry he did it, and be considered as -:perfect gentleman" as before the mishap We have seen many ladies who absolutely de ny that there is any apologetic regenora tion Which will restore a gentleman to their unqualified respect after he has stepped upon a dress. "A perfect gen tleman," they say, "is never guilty of such a thing." "Ah, ladles," we have

arc

never means more than you think it does, perhapB—it involves an accuracy of pedal control which would demand the undivided attention of the brain—we are none of us more than human."

The ladies, however, refuse to listen to argument they insist that a "perfect gentlemen is never guilty," &c., with a persistence peculiar to themselves. They insist that a young man who is so unfortunate as to mistake a dress pattern for a velvet carpet must regard himself with utter contempt. They are not satisfied with blushes and apologies. They accord, indeed, a smile, and say it is an old dress, and all that, but they curl the corners of their lips and compare the offender with the ideal of a ''perfect gentleman,'' which each lady carries in her heart. Now we do not propose to argue the question, but would like to hear the opinions of our friends upon the subject. The season of fashion and balls, and— shall we say it of a particular season tbe season of church-going is at hand.— We are to encounter trails upon the streets, it is evident, as well as in the drawing-room. The subject then is an important one, and should be decided immediately.

Is it excusable in a gentlemen, under any circumstances, to step upon a lady's dress
