"While in the coantry" a" feV" days ago •we noticed that the buaindfi of "working the roads" had commenced in They are being prepared iti wh'atis ccfriEidered the best manner possible, under the circumstances, for tr'avef dtlring the winter and spring seasons... Ail,,0111" citizens know that the common dirt or mud roads of Yigo county, like similar thoroughfares almost everywhere, are fiard roads to travel" for the greater -portwo of the year. But it is not profitable to make them worse by the work which ie intended to improve them. A very erroneous practice is prevalent, especially in country localities, in the manner in which common or dirt road? are constructed "When a road is to bo repaired, the usual practice is to leave, the track whicli is most traveled undisturbed by the plow, the notion being that, as it is already hard it would be erroneous economy to' break its surface. The plow, under the' licence of this opinion, is used on each side of the bard.6urface, and the earth is plowed to sufficient width to make the Requisite side ditche?, the loose dirt being thrown into the middle, upon the hard surfuce, which i3 thus loft .& little crown* ing. This mode of making or repairing a road is altogether erroneous, and, perhaps in a majority of cases, results in more injury than The result, huwover, dapegds,
