without liis consent. There is another point whicl£bas been

raised under this statute of 1861., It arose in Olinton county in 1862 or 18G3. A married woman possessed- property in her own-right, a portion ofwhlch was leased, if wo renttaiber correctly. She brought a suit iu her own name, without Joining her husband, ugainsta party wno owed r«nt. A demurrer was put in by iho delendant, raising the pre

cise point that a married woman cuuld not sue without joining her ha?b7iTi^r'" Ir''^X"contenaed by the defendant" tbat it could not haveibden intundod by the Legislature,,^ enacting the sUtulo in question, to vocate the coini nion law rule requiring a married woman to join her husband in such suits. The ease went to th« Supremo Qourt, .and, wo believe, the court qust'aic.ed the dtaiurrer,. thuj holding that a married woman could

not-sue in her own name, without the husband, iif a: matter which the rents and profits of her own prBJjerty wore con

cerned. 'f Here, too, under sucti a decision, a married woman is exceeiin£ly restricted in the "enjoyment cf her property, for a brute of a husband might absolutely pre^ vent her recovery of the^profils of her own real estate by refusirfg to join in

»uit for it. Evidently tho gallant members of the Illinois Legislature must fcmend the .law, if they would hav© fulPctisdit for being champions of woman's rights.

Ihe Beconstructlon of Europe.

The central idea which suggested the holding y_t ..Uie recent Peace Congress at Geneva, and inspired all it%. proceedings, was ttecenvietfcn that mitsf of the great w!irs"WtIich" H'Sve'cTosolated Europe sprang from motives, which to free nations should be unknown, and that ^he establishment of libera! instittiti6ns throughout Europe would bo the surest hftibifiger of a universal und everlasting peace. Prominent representatives of most of the groat nations of Europe were present, and their views on. national questions showed a very promising harmony. Frenchmen and Germans, Poles and Russians, appeared here, not as natural and irreconcilableenem ies,Jsjrtsdtxoiwoekws fotwme aim, who lelt convineedr'that the sovereign rights of every tfaiigfi can bo fully secured without iatriidutg. upon Uhos^- of, others.
