A delegation of neighbors now crowded around the bed to learn how the sick man felt. He endeavored briefly to convey some idea of his feelings. One of those present asked if he would take a preparation to check the fever. He anr swered he might, provided it was neither calomel nor quinine. No, it was a homeopathic remedy. Well the subject had no objection. Soon after a physycian made his appearance, looked rather soricus, gave his instiuctions and told the subject to quench his thirst with almost any decent drink. Now, he happened to be always thirsty, tried citrate of mag* nesia for a while, but soon got disgusted with it, then tried lemonade, but with no better success. Tbe novel idea struck him to try pure cold water, and it turned out to be exactly the thing.

How it feels to have tbe Teller Fever

From

the Ntw Orleans Bulletin.

The following was written by a yellow fever patient on the fifth day after being taken sick, the labor oif writing it caused a relapse, which came very hear costing him his life:

Tho writer of this has had a glimpse of purgatory, and the way it came to pass was this: Tuesday morning "Yellow, Jack," so called, introduced himself unceremoniously, and at onca proceeded to break every bone in this poor subject's body. He was left helpless and prostra* ted. Now appeared an army of little devils, who commenced pftwling. proddling, and digging, to satisfy themselves that not a bone was lefC unbroken. But in spite of all the devils^ the skull re* mained unbroken. They made a detail to keep continually beating the subject on the top of the head, and downward, toward the neck. Then they had a kind of Greek fire, which at regular intervals they poured down the spine of the subject.

Having arranged all of these preliminaries' they ot course thought they "h&(i him dead. Now they commenced a cuirious game: all would whirl around, then stop all of a sudden and play with some strange devices, that were neither cards nor dice, yet something of the sort. The subject, watehed this game With intense interest, so much so that he almost forgot his broken bones and unhinged joints. Thus hismind and the spirits and the game Went spinning along till nearly dark, when a servant entered and asked if the subject was sick. He rather thought he.was.

The physician continued his visits, and would announce from day to day with a curious air that the patient was better. In the meantime, when not interrupted, the subject and the spirits and the curious game played by the latter went swimmingly along together as much so as on' the first day, but gradually the host grew, smaller some of the spirits -seemed to' have urgent business elsewhere, others lugged and all that ran around grew more careless. But just in exact proportion' the subject grew more and mora "power, ful weak" Thursday morning he was all powerfull weaker the spirits hdd all left but two, ono rested on each eyelid. With a kick and snort the subject flung back the bed cover landed on the floor, and said, "I ain't dead yet."

With the assistance of a nature, of whose existance the subject now became aware, he found his way back to bed again. Friday morning he found himself so powerfully weak that he did not feci able to raise a finger. The doctor came and looked rather more pleasant than usual said that everybody bud expected the subject to die, but continued he, "You are not going to die you'll be out in a few days."

A brilliant idea struck the subject, and summoning all his strength, he raised himself on his hunches [sic], and told the doctor he would like to have something to eat. The doctor suggested that the subjeet might drink a cup of coffee with boiled milk. Would a duck swim? The coffee was well made and drank, and the patient gained strength enough to attempt to write this. ---<>---

"The Fast Runner."

Gen. Harney, who is sixty-seven years of age, is six feet three inches in hight [sic], and is as straight as an arrow and in his younger days used to excel every Indian on the plains with whom he came in contact, in running, jumping and wrestling. He is known universally among the Indians as the "fast runner." He says he was never badly pressed but once in running, and that was many years ago, when he was encamped at the Mandan village, on the Missouri river. The Indians had brought in their fastest runner and challenged the General to run. All the tribes in that part of the country were present, and all were in high glee, thinking they had a sure thing. General Harney prepared himself and went out about half a mile from camp across a ravine, which was as near as the Indians were allowed to come to his camp, and met them. The Indians were so confident of winning the race, that they bet everything they possessed on the result, and the officers and soldiers of Harney's command also backed their favorite to the fullest extent. The Indians would bet a buffalo robe against a plug of tobacco, or a pony against

few pounds of sugar and coffee. The odds they considered in their favor. The distance ran was eight hundred yards, and one from each side chosen to start them and as judges of the race. The Indian got abont fifteen feet the advantage of the General on the start, but supposing he could beat the Indian easily he did not mind it first, but it was a long distance to

The deaths of 134 officers and 3,403 non commissioned officers and men are recorded, and are thus epitomized thirty-four deaths of officers in Great Britain, three in Ireland, and ninety-sev-en abroad 713 deaths of non-commission ed officers and men in Great Britain, 209 in Ireland, and2,481 abroad. The rate of mortality in the army abroad during 1865 was, in the case -f the officers, 1,579 per cent, and in the case of non-commissioned officers and men, 2,102: whereas the mortality in Great Britain was, with officers, 1,007 per cent., and with non-commissioned offiicers and men 1,183.

gain, and by putting forth his utmost efforts and straining every nerve he only beat the Indian three feet. The Indian dropped upon the ground at the end of the race exhausted, and was so chagrined at his defeat that he would under no circumstances come near the General again. The General would only accept a few trifling things for his winnings, but gave the rest back to the Indian. From this time he has been known among the In- dians as "the fast runner," and his influence is in proportion to his popularity. ---<>---
