CIRCUIT COURT.—The Cin/uit Court, Judge Thompson presiding, watf in ses* sion yesterday. The criminal docket was called through in the morning and a few up important trials had. The civil docket was called through during the afternoon and considerable business dispatched by defaults, agreements, &c. Tlie Grand Jury reported several indictments before the adjournment of the court in the afternoon, The court will sit at 9 A. M. today. tm »t» ffff Tho voting on Tuesday last was quite tedious in consequence of tbe Registry law, and it was about as much as one could do to bold on long enough to go through the ceremony of voting. We have no doubt many were deterred from going to the polls on account of the length of time that would be consumed in voting. We free that the same difficulty was experienced in other places. Various remedies are suggested, to vote two in wards, and to number the voter recol-

gugjf Prayer Meeting every morning) Sundays excepted, from 9 to 10 o'clock in the Young Mons' Christian Association Rooms, corner of Dth aud Main streets.

These meetings, suspended during the heated term, were reorganized by a very interesting ona yesterday morning. It is thcintontion of tho young men to continue them during the winter, and they cordially invite all who feel an interest in havng a daily prayer meeting in our mid jof whatever denomination they may be, to come up and help sustain them.

If you cannot spend au hour, spend ten minutes in this place of prayer. "Whoever will, let him CJine."

The September number of "The

Casualty," a little sheet published by the United States Casualty Company, of New York, has beon laid upon our table by M. A. Crane, Agent for this city. A glance at the fourth page of this sheet will give "some idea of the work this Company is doing, and of the benefits accruing from Accident Insurance. It has already paid several losses in Terre Haute, an acknowledgment of the last of which appears in another column. It is tho only Mutual Accidental Company in the United States, and has lately declared a dividend of 12$ per cent to policy holders.

At tho Fair at St. Louis on Satur

day the purso of $300 for the fastest trotting horse, mare or gelding, going five times around the arena, was won by Sir Walter—time 1.48J. The second and third prizes were won by Rolla and Rosa Gold Dust.

Rolla and Rosa were tied, having made tho second best time in 1.52 each. A second trial was had between them, resulting in a second tie, cach trotting in 1.50. As they both belonged to L. L. Dorsey, and the premiums would both go into the samo pocket, no further trial was had Thtre were seven entries.

Five hundred barrels of highwines

were recently seized by the Revenue officers in New York and taken to a bonded ware house. This, in connection with the enormous frauds that are daily being committed on the Government is likely to lead to the detection of a gigantic swindle oh the part of Western whisky men. A plan had been concocted to get 15,000 barrels of fraud whisky on the New York market, tho spirits to be dispatched in separate lots of 500 barrels each, consigned to different persons. The first lot has b*en seized and placed in a setiure place. These packages purport to hava been- regularly inspected in the 2d District of Ohio. No owner has yet appeared to claim them.

STATE' FAX~^».»— THA Chicago Times makes the following "comment* upon the influences of State Fairs:

Tb.ere are undoubtedly some benefits accruing to these exhibitions but there are not half so many benefits as, and there area good many more evils than, there should be. The advertising feature, and the doubtful morality of the race track, are elements difficult of separation from fairs. The characteristic, however, of doubled charges and depreciated accommodations can and ought to be reme died. If there are towns which cannot live and flourish without tho privilege of an occasional raid upon the public wallet, it would be much moro decent to let them die, or else let them pass around a begging*paper, asking for contributions to their support. The public would much prefer this form of charity to one in which there is an assumption, on the part of the recipient of alms, of a reciprocity. The only place to hold State fairs is in large cities, in which there is no tempta-

of
