What Thurlow Weed Sajfa—Tat Action of Congress In Her
It will be remembered Tjy those who read Mrs. Lincoln's correspondence, published in th6 Gazette of Satji^day, that she is represente'l iis beirig especially angry with Thurlow Weed and Messrs. So ward and Raymond. In the $cw York" Commercial Advertiser, of Saturday afternoon, Mr. Weed thus speaks io his own and friends' defense:
In her conversations, Mrs. Lincoln, represented as bitterly denouncing Secre-, tary Seward, for which, of course, there is no warrant or excuse, for he wrongs if6 man, and much less is he capable, of injustico, wrong, or even unkindness fo tfo-' man. But wd happen to know—tHe lat® Caleb B.Smith, then Secretary of terior, being our informant—a factt tohicf incensed Mrs. Lincoln against Mr. Sew£ ard. The President gave the Prippe Na- PHcu poleon a dinner, for which Mrs. j^ihcoln sent to the Secretary of the Iptprior, for payment, a bill of some $900,..:Thi6 de1 mand, though wholly illegal, coming froni
Though Mr. Lincolnj left an estate which enabled hii family to Jive, quite as comfortably as they ever lived, CongVess and the pooDle would haye jarpmptly and cheerfully, provided mufffScently for thom i. Mrs. Lincoln herself, with every advantage that high posi^ii her had made friends or inspired respect.— And this last exhibition proves how instinctively right the popula|' ^stimKta ot her character was. Tito feetTdr* wh(ch Mrs. Lincoln seok3 largo publicity namely, thaUhe received presents valued at $24^000, is a pregnant and suggestive one—suggestive, at least, of offices and contracts, unless the more charitable construction is reached through the assumption thnt they were expression^, of regard and friendship. But itjisiot known that the wife of ahy otherJPresident, however estimable, was eo loaded with shawls, laces, furs, diamonds, rings, &c. J*
Mrs. Lincoln's propensity to stell things was manifested early, and before any necessity was foresedif. If our Information wasreliiable. even of Mr. Lincoln's new linen ahirts were sold almost before the remains, which were shrouded in the twelfth, had started for that "bourne from whence no traveler turns.'^
Individually, we are obliged tOj tilts Lincoln for an expression of her ill wijll It is pleasant to remember that wrp wdre always out of favor to that quarter? And it is equally pleasant to renfember thbt we possessed the friendship and coniftdenco of Mr. Lincoln to the last hour of his life, without paying court, as othors did,.to Mrs. Lincoln, and in spite,of her constant efforts to disturb our relations.!
The Cleveland Herald, after remarking that Mrs. Lincoln, by her recent course, has forfeited that claim to? forbearance which the public is always ready to extend toward a woman, says
The fact3 aro theso: Judge Davis, Lincoln's administrator, reported that the estate was worth $76,000.. .'Congress gave Mrs. Lincoln the President's unexpired year's salary, and also gave hpr $25,CftO besides, the same as was allowed tho late Mrs. Gen. Harrison.
Congressman Wentworth pressedfMrs. Lincoln's claim for one hundred4 trrousand dollars, but Congress did not think such a gift justifiable. There aro othei: facts that should seo tho light, and-per-haps would explain Mrs. Lincoln's presl er.t "straightened" circumstances. Amon£ such facts is this, that a bill for some $15,000, for jewelry purchased by Mrs. Lin coin was presented to Congress and disallowed, and the secrets of that committee could divulge the most remarkable items that through Mrs. Lincoln was presented for payment. Wo hope these things will all bo mado public, atd that it also m'nji be known what the huge forty boxes sent to Chicago to tho White Hoiiee, after the death ot Mr. Lincoln, contained. Let the country know tho fact that i^ required an appropriation of one hundred" thou* sand dollars to make good the spoliation at tho White House, and Jet i.t be prove^ who had the benefit of such plundering.

A Cretan Chief—The Story of a ModCi*" Spartan. Among the bravu men who, in the illfated island of Crete, are sustaining, sin gto-htffiae3~agVirnst a powerful m.d brutal ioe, the cause of crvilizution and freedom, there is oi)e whose portrait, as we find it drawn in Greek journal, is worthy of a place beside the figures of the Homeric heroes! Deuriotl-ius Petropoulaki is indeed a striking p'roof, if one were needed, that tho ancient blood of Greeco still runs in the veins~of living men. Seventy years of war and snfferihg have left their inark upon tho gigantic form fatigue and wounds and exposure have made visibie inroads upon the iron frame. Half patrlacb, half cavalier, there is an expression of resignation to Btiffering on his face and a look as. of a (Jying lioH in tho half-clos-ec! "black eye, while an ineffable smile of goo&riess dwells on his lips, beneath his long, heavy moustache, and his hands are slashed with sabre cuts, and so riddled has he been with balls that when he speaks, you can hear every word produce a painful hissing in his breast. All over his martyred flesh is written the epic of his life An exchanging gentleness, august serenity, exhale, as it were, from bis pof^on.t Th£ impression, he loaves upon you is of the just man, who, content with the ijpast and assured df pftac* with God, awaits his hour in confidence.
Chtef of a powerful clan in Man a, that smail district, the homo of tho ancient Spartan, which.tho Turks have never been ablp to perpetrate, Demetrius Petropoulaki hak remained faithful to the manners of his ancestors, and ihe white tunic and scarlet sash —tha splendid cosiume of Skanderbe^—still lend their aid to enhance the-majesty of his person.

Of such men as these the accounts we have from Crete make little mention, yet it is such m§n as these who can alone make '(hos^ accounts credible, for the Hvorld has never witnessed a spectacle of greater endurance and more astonishing h^oHm'than -exhibited daily in the lives of these Cretan volunteers for liberty. But history some day will do them justice, and when that day comes the grand old chief Petropoulaki will form the leading figure in the awful drama whieh barbarism and civilization aria en» acting, in this blood-soaked island of Greta ...
