Advertising in the Dally Express,

A Carious Scene in Cbarch.

Among the offenses known to. the Eng lish common law, is that of "brawling in church." A year or two since, a Bishop was prosecuted for stopping the service to rebuke two young ladies who bowed at the Gloria Hatri. But this case is capped by one recently tried in a Manchester court. The plaintiff in this case was the butler of the Bev. Thomas Blundell Hollinahead Blundell, of Halsale. The de* fendant was Mrs. Blundell.

The butler testified that he was in the ]jew directly in front of the one in which !klrs. Blundell was sitting that during the hymn before the sermon she leanded over and struck him three times on the shoulder with her hymn-book that he turned about and told her it would become her as a lady to stop that that when the hymn was over she came out of her pew, stood at the door of his, and ordered him to leave the church that her husband came down from the pulpit and repeated the order that upon his refusal, Mrs Blun* dell, "closing her fist, drew it up to his .. •nT?TtrkGQU face as if about to strike him, and clench- CiJrxCUooJi,

ed her teeththat she asked the coachman to put him out, and upon his decline iog to undertake the job, went back to her own pew, and that ne sat out the.,rest of tho service.

Heyes, laborer, testified that he saw Mrs. Blundell push the complainant with her hymn-book twice. They wore not blows she merely touched him on the shoulder with the book. He could not hear what was said, but he could see Mrs. Blundell's lip moving.

Hughes, commercial traveler, corroborated this version of the story. Being a little deaf, he did not hear what Mrs: Blundeli said, but he could see her lips moving. When the Rev. Mr. Blundell came down from the pulpit, witness heard the complainant tell him that he would report him to his bishop. That was said in a rather loud tone, and that was why witness hoard it. He also observed Mrs. Blundell put herself in a position as if she were ordering the complainant out of he id no he he is in his face, nor clench her teeth. Witness went to the church for the purpose of enjoying the service, but what occurred spoiled" all tho enjoyment. Ho nevor witnessed such a scene in church before.

The coachman testified that the butler was standing at the time on one leg, with one hand on the pew door and the other holding his hymn book.

Mrs. Blundell's counsel explained that the butler had been spoken to about it fortnight before the day in question, for irreverence in church. On the day in question, the position be stood ia was irreverent, and Mrs. Blundell touchod him on the back with her book, to call his attention to his conduct.

The magistrates debated the matter tor a quarter of an hour, and came to tbe conclusion that the assault complained of was not so severe as to merit punishment. The principle seems to be thus established that if butlers stand on one leg in service time it is lawful to punch them in tho back with hymn books. -,r.

Mrs. Lydia Conger died in Wheeling, Sunday, a^ed 102. A reporter who sailed on her two or threo years ago, writes "The old lady was almost a mummy when we saw hor. and practically incapable of overseeing the cultivation of her lands. Still she retained her memory, and wa3 fond of reading the news of the day.- We found her Sunday, as it was potring over a copy of the National bilelligencer, a paper that she had at that timo taken for upward of fifty years.— We gave her an extra containing the news of Jeff Davis' capture, but appa rently the affair did not interest her any more tban items she had previously been reading, and her remarks concerning Jeff Davis and his follower?, and tho general facts of the war, wero rnther of an indifferent and confused character. The house seemed to be domiciled by a few colored domestics who had charge of everything, and among whom tbe old lady lingered as a traditional mistress' who had come down from great antiquity, and who had owned their fathers and mothers, and perhaps their grandfathers and mothers in days very long gone. She remained simply as something for them to look at, sitting there stooped and withered in the corner of a cold, bare-looking room, wearing a soiled dreas of heavy blue cloth, (in which she seemed to have often slept), that was relieved by old fashioned ruffles in the bosom, and by an ancient gold chain around her neck.".

The wife of Senator Sninner, has gone to Europe. Ho remains. JPhil. Sheridan steod sixth^fourth in the list of Captains when the war broke ont. -L 'V "in- ntH

Bonner says he prides himself on two things. These are, "In demonstrating that a paper of high moral tone ...will be tbe most successful, and that a private gentleman can own and drive the best horses in the country without making a gambler of himself."

Gen. Beauregard visited Richmond last week, for the second time in his life.— This is strange, but true. In May, 1861, he made a rapid passage through the city in a hack, from one depot to another.— Subsequent to that period, in the manifold marches, countermarches and military movements, Beauregard never once entered this city in'the eventful career of the Confederacy.
