CITY AND STATE ITtiMS.

Jgy The hickory nut crop will be large

this season.

Skiff & Gaylord's Minstreli appear

at Dowling Hall to-morrow night. ...

C6P* The Circuit Court convenes this morning, and will at once commence activo business. .,

The law requiring the closing of

liquor saloons on election day was gonerally observed ye6terday.,

Judgo Eckles has recently iecidpd

tho Fish law unconstitutional. This makes two decisions against Judge Thompson'? in favor of it.

The admission fees and rent of

booths underneath, more than paid the cost of erecting the amphitheatre at the Fair Grounds. ... ....

ggy We are informed the St'aie Fair Grounds are to be placed in charge of a competent man who will reside on the pi a oe and protect the propeaty.

The appearance of the veritable

Black Crook, at Dowling Hall, Friday evening, is causing quite a flutter among our people, and an extensive patronage will no doubt be given it during its stay.

We invite attention to the card of Mr. Wm. B. Manning, house, sign and ornamental painter. It was this gentle man that received the premium at the State Fair, on Sign painting, instead of W. H. Manning, as printed.

A chap afflicted with palpitation

of the heart, says instant relief can be found by the application of another palpitating hourt to the part affected. Nb particular directions given—only do it gracefully and let 'em palpitate

jjQF" The eating business at the Fa grounds was rather overdone—that is, in .the number of stands—and wo are told many of tho proprietors lost money, while others barely made enough to clear expenses. One of the beat stands on the ground wound up business with only about one hundred dollars for the week's work.

TITK NORMAL SCHOOL BUILDING.—We learn at the recent meeting of the Board of Trustees of the State Normal School, after a careful examination, tho brick work done by Messrs Miles & Hedden, as far as it has progressed, was accepted, being satisfactory to the Board, both as to quality of material furnuhed and work done.

We understand also that the work has been examined by some of the most competent builders in tho State and by them pronounced a first-class job.

Tho work will progress rapidly until tbe season for laying brick closes.

EriToniAL EXCURSION.—-On Monday an excursion party of near two hundred editors loft Chicago on a railroad trip to tho Fur Wnst. They will go as far as the present termination of the Pacific Railroad, Providencejand the Indians permitting. They are prepared with arms and ammunition, and are fully determined to oxtormionto any indiscreet red man who may have the temerityjto cross their path.

Wo were honored with a "dead head" ticket to make one of the party, but a slight fear that some gentle savage might carry tho "dead head" system too far, caused us to decline tho invitation.

ADVERTISE ADVERTISE I I—Now is the vimo to advertise in the EXPRESS.' Money is becoming plentier, and trade is reviving. No good business man can afford to take his sign down, or fail to have one up at such a time. The EXPRESS has a large circulation among the very best class of purchasers, and every day adds numbers of new subscribers to its list. Our daily reaches nearly every family in Terre Haute and vicinity, while our weekly is re id by thousands of peo pie in the country, for many counties around. No merchant should fail to advertise in either no thoroughly live one will. Wo are benefitted by advertising, but not so much as the advertiser.

THE "£LK£TION.—Tha apa&by, or neglect of duty on the part of the Uaion men, hi is no doubt allowed the election to go in favor of the Democracy. Scarcely two-thirds of the voters of Harrison township went to the polls, and of course the great majority of those who stayed away were Bepublicans. The Democrats were ont In force, and by active work and concerted action polled their full strength.

We have no returns from the outside townships. The following is the'result ill the two voting precincts in this township: ,.5 j£*OR CIBCTJIT JUMI

YOM KIPUR.—On last evening commenced the day of atonement, or as it is called in the Hebrew,

1'om Kipur,

which

will conntinue until the stars appear this evening. This is a day that is more strictly observed than any other in the Jewish calendar

Among the Jews it is tho belief that on New Year's Day, or September 30, the names of those who are to suffer the providences of the Almighty—such as sickness, death, or loss of friends or property—are written down in the record of God. Up to the 10th day atonement may be made ifthepaople humble themselves before Jehovah, otherwise the record is sealed and the judgement is sure.

SIBIOUS AeciDE*T.—During the firing of the cannon last night in the Court House square, a man named Henry Centeno, living on the Michigan road beyond the corporation line, a cigar maker by trade, in the employ of Speckman, on South Illinois street, suffered a fracture of the right arm and shattering of the hand by a premature discharge. The wounded man was carried to Metzner's drug store, where every attention was paid him, and Drs. Harvey, Sutter and Wright were called in. The case was finally given to Dr. Harvey, who thinks he can save the arm from the necossity of amputation. Centeno has a wife to support, and begged hard for the physicians to leave him his arms to work with. This is another of a series of accidents occurring at public meetings, and it is enough to compel a serious canvass of the propriety of doing away with artillery salutes.—/nd,

THE HIGHEST TBIBUTEOF ALL.—The fact that the thousands who thronged the recent State Fair pronounced the magnificent Cycloid Grand as the finest toned instrument they ever heard, is alone of far more value to me than all the silver medals put together.
