A CARD.

MVSSR8. EDITORS: The attention of the State Board of Agriculture was called to an article in Saturday morning's paper reflecting upon the conduct of the State Board and the awarding committee relative to the awards on Sewing Machines.

It is due the State Board, the Committee, and the public, that the clamor of these men shauld be answered. The protest of these men was presented to the I Board by the President, and the Committee was immediately called upon, and the

Committee pronounced the charge of interference on the part of Dr. Frink or any other parties wholly untrue. These same men after first refusing to exhibit their Jna chines followed up the Committee, apologised and expressed full confidence in th^. Committee and one of them (the agent of the Singer machine), wished an examination, which was made by the Committee, and a first premium awarded as a machine for manufacturing purposes. After this the protest was published in your pa per. This clamor is only a repetition of what has been the course of these men heretofore. Every insinuation in the article of Saturday morning's communication, relative to improper interference on the part of "One Frink, or others," as without foundation, and it is due the pub lie that this statement should be made. LONDOK, Oct. 4.—The report that a policeman had been shot by Fenians at Rochdale is contradicted.

LIVKRPOOL, Oct. 4.—To-morro-w will be observed as a holliday. The Exchange will be closed, and business will be gener ally suspended.

LONDON, Oct. 4—The latest dispatches from Italy, though conflicting contain a highly important message just received from Florence announcing that the insurgent troops^ holding a strong position near Bagnarea in Viterbo, were attacked by the Papal forces. A short sharp fight resulted in the defeat of tho attacking party, who were obliged hastily to retreat. Losses not stated.

The effect of this victory is very inspiring to the party of Acton. A public meeting of the friends of Garibaldi was held at Turin yesterday. Revolution#ry speeches were made by many distinguished persons. A great crowd of people were present and the enthusiasm was unbounded.

A meeting of like character is in contemplation in other cities of Italy. Though a prisoner at Caperara, Garibaldi has issued a stirring address to bis followers, which is published to-day. He reiterates at length the grievances of Italy and asks his countrymen to redress them now. Ho appeals strongly to their patriotism, and urges all bis friends to march forth.

Latest yesterday afternoon advices were received by the authorities to the effect that an attack by the Fenians in one of the armories in this city might be expected during tbs night.

Government troops wore accordingly posted at different armories and other precautionary steps were also taken which prevented the threatened outbreak.

Annual meeting of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee. CINCINNATI, Oct. 5.—Tho second annual meeting of the Array of the Tennessee will be held in St. Louis, Nov. 13th, at 10 o'clock a. m.

Every officer who has at any time served with honor in the army of Tennessee is entitled to membership, and to all such an earnest invitation is extended to be present. Officers are oxpected "to attend in uniform.

The officers of the Society are, Major General. John A. Rawlins, President Lieut. Col. L. M. Dayton, Recording Secretary, St. Louis, aud A Hickenlooper, Corresponding Secretary, Cincinnati.

Railroad Thieves Arrested ST. Louis, Oct. 5.—Omaha dispatches say a party of railroad thieves whose operations extended over tho Pacific railroad for the past six months has been broken up. Most if not all of them are arrested. A largo amount of property was found secreted in Omaha. It is also ascertained that a large quantity of goods were shipped to points east during the summer. All the parties implicated were connected with the road.

INDIAN AFFAIRS.

The Pawnee scouts are said to be highly incensed with Spotted Tail's Indians, and say when they are n^ustered out of the United States service tlky will make war upon them.

VAST FREIGHT LINE

A fast freight lino is to be established between the terminus of the Kansas Pacific railroad and Denver.

ON A HUSTINQ EXCURSION.

Lieuts. Butler, Kentish, Mansfield and Malloy, of the British army, passed through Omaha, Thursday, on a bunting excursion to the plains.

A party of French engineers, invited by General Diz, Minister to France, to visit this country, also have gone West with a view of gaining information of the country, Railroads, mines, &c. They are in charge of Col. Hein, Secretary of Legation at Paris.

RIVER DISASTER.

The steamer Ben Johnson sunk this morning in the Missouri river, two miles above Brownsville, Nebraska. Loss not ascertained.

Shipment of CurrencyNEW YORK, Oct.* 6.—Bii ^shipment of currency west for the week is about six millions of dollars making fifty millions since August.

The Assistant Treasury bought about three million's of 7-30 notes during the week, and sold half a million of dollars in gold. The Assistant Treasurer has commenced the issue of three per cent certificates in exchange for compound notes.

A Prise Fight.

DETROIT, Oct. 6-^jallagfier and Davis fought to-day at Fighting Island, seven miles from here. Davis won in 45 rounds knocking #Gallagher out of timo. The latter had the oest of the fight till the last round.

NEW YORK, Oct. 5,—The Herald's Montreal special says a great fire is raging in the town of St. Johns, near Bouses Point. It is reported that half of Iho town is destroyed. The authorities of St. Johns have telegraphed liere for engines and firemen which, have been promptly sent by special train.

Israel Wood, one of the drivers of Stadley's Express Company, was at rested and taken before Justice Cornwell, in Brook* lyn jesterday, on a charge of robbery. It appears the company had missed packages from time to time and suspicion was fir ally directed to the accused. Testerday he was traced to the house of engine company No. 9, where search.was made and about one thousand dollan worth of the stolen property recovered.

Additional particulars of the riot at Jefferson City, Louisiana, Bhows that an ex-rebdl named Holland commenced a general onslaught with a revolver on the colored people at the polls, assisted by a few of his political friends. The negroes were badly wounded, but the rest of the crowd returned tho fire, killing Rolland and dangerously wounding one of his co riot era. The military soon arrived on the ground and quieted matters. t'
