DIED—On Friday morning, October 4th, of congestion of bowels, Mr. Thomas Chess in the 64th year of his age. The funeral will take place at the residence fit* E. A. Chess on North Sixth Street,: this (Saturday) morning at 10,J o'clock,— Friends of the family are invited to attond.

SUPPOSED MUEDEK.—Thursday night as Conductor Sbartle's night express train came in from the east, it ran over the body of a man, mutilating it in a most horrible manner. The body was immediately picked up and found to be that of C. R. McKinney, a resident of Shelburne, twenty miles south of the city. Wh^i taken up the body was quite cbld, and there can be no doubt the man was mur dered, robbed, and the body placed on on the track to cover up tho hellish work. McKinney had about seven hundred dol» lars with him during the day, and this money was gone. The coroner's jury^ entirely exhonerated the ongineer from all blame.

The lair is -nevertheless a complete success, and the crowd seemed in the best possible humor over the rain that had come with drenching jxiver at last. Eighteen thousand and twenty-four tickets were sold yesterday at the gate, and the receipts from tickets to this time are nearly fourteen thousand dollars from ail sources, twenty thousand dollars, up to last night, which is six thousand dollars in excess of the en

THE GREAT TBOT.

The great interest of the day was cen tered inJhe contest for the one thousand dollar purse. At two o'clock the Judges, Mark Smith of Muncie, Horace Britton of Evansville, and Rob Watt of Wayne county entered the stand and the horses wore calied out. The track after the rain of the day previous was in superb condi tion. From twenty to thirty thcusandpeople densely packed the amphitheatre and the lines around the ring, while the centre was Well filled with carriages. The whole scene as viewed from the Judg e's stand waB one of the grandest ever wit. nes3ed in the SUte, ar.d demonstrated the fact that the horse ia one of the best curds of an ngriculturui exhibition.

The third pair were Dor3ey's horse3, Eolla and Rosr Gold Dust. At tho start Rolla took the lead, but Rosa came in ahead on the first half mile at the end of the third quarter they were neck and neck, when Rolla shot ahead, and at the close led by about fifty feet. Time—2:37$ Rosa 2:41. I The fourth pair consisted of "Champaign"'and "Billy Uarr." The former won the poll, and the two etarted off well, and throughout exhibited the prettiest, and most even trotting of the series.— Champaign led off, but Barr soon caught up with him, and for next a quarter of a mile they were neck and neck, neither horse making a misstep. Champaign took the lead on the last quarter and came in forty feet abend, making the mile in 2 34J. whil« Barr was set down at 2.36.

The first heat was awarded to Carpenter's horse Champaign. At the conclusion of this heat a heavy rain set in. but the trotting was continued until five .o'clock—three additional heats being accomplished—^when night coming on it was found necessary to adjourn the contest until this morning.
