Thi expedition to Abyssinia is being vigorously organized both in England and India. Steam transports have been chartered, and will proceed at once to Bombay. Seven thousand mules and 6000 camels are to be purchased for the transportation of supplies over the sandy desert and rocky mountains of King Theodore. Tbe infantry troops are to be sent from India but a squadron of English dragoons, four regiments of irregular cavalry and two batteries of mountain howitzers are to be added. The Commander. in-Ohief will be Sir Robert Napier, with political and military power. The preliminary expenses amount to twenty^flve millions of dollars, and what further expenditures will be necessary time will only show but if Theodore withdraws to the recesses of his dominions, the demands on the Treasury will be enormous, at the expedition will not be in a condition to begin the march until Decomber. The Eaglish [people are Comforting themselves with the hope that the Abyssian despot will be prevailed upon to give up the captivei. The Palmerstonian doctrine of protection to the most insignifi cant British subject, no matter where he may be, is calculated in this instance to draw deeply upon tbe governmental resources but John Bull grumbles and pays, and consoles himself with the prospect of the annexation of more territory and the extension of his markets for cotton goods.

-The citizen of San Francisco who, dying, directed by his will that twenty thousand dollars should be paid to the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, towards reducing the national debt, was, doubtless, actuated by good motives. He had paid his taxes during his lifetime, and although death would have relieved him of his obligation, he determined that after death his mite should be contributed toward the redemption of the national burdens. It is impossible to think otherwise than, kindly of a disposition like thisThere is among many living men a disposition to evade contribution to the national demands. Evasion of payment ef taxes is a thing in regard to which many men, otherwise claiming to be honorable, are unscrupulous. The amount of which the government is annually cheated is immense. If it were not so our difficulties would not be as great as they -are. T» all who are inclined to evade Ihefce contributions to the support ot tbe government this example is such that if the deeign is properly considered, it will shame them out of their dishonesty. Compared to the total of our debt the bequest is a trifle, but it may have its effect. It is not, however, to be presumed that there will be many like examples. Rich men generally have families who claim, naturally, their possessions, and to whom in

SEVENTEENTH YEAR.

more the repudiation scheme of

the democratic leaders is discussed, the ,• more the people despise its rascality. The moro rotten and disgraceful the cause, the better do the repudiationists like it.

THE elections of Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Iowa occur next Tuesday. The Ohio election is looked to as the important one. and no political campaign, perhaps, has occurred in the history of the

accordance with custom and right they should go. Occasionally there may be one who has no relatives who have claims ^ipon iii'tn for the whole of their wealth, men like Girard or McDonough, possessed of affluence, who may hesitate in their declining days as to the disposition that they shall make of their effects. With such the example of this California an may have its attractions, causing them to imitate it. But while it is probable that a few of such cases may be noted hereafter, it is still evident that the exjunction of the national debt is a task which will devolve mainly upon the living of the present generation and those who shall succeed them, and is only to be accomplished by a prompt, cheerful and steady obedience to the national demands.
