Mr. L. Sullivant in Illinois*
Mr. L. Sullivaat, late of Columbus, is known to many people in Ohio as a gentleman of great enterprise, long time connected with the State Board of Agriculture. A late writer in the Prairie Maimer, who has been at the present location of Mr. Sullivant, furnishes the following items of his farming operations:
It will be remembered that Mr. Sullivant has for several years oceup ed a farm in Champaign County, containing about twenty-three thousand acres, that he had brought under a fine state of preparation for a stock farm, but last year sold it to Mr. Alexander, of Kentucky, for a very handsome price, with the intention of im» proving the land in Ford County, at which we bad now arrived. Mr. Sullivant owns in one body here about forty thousand acres, most judiciously selected and located at an early day. Its altitude and position may be judged Qf when we inform the reader that ohe Vermillion, the Mackinaw and the Sangamon rivers of Illinois may all be traced to this body ol land, thus giving it sure and permanent drain* age in every needed direction. It is one vast prairie, with the exception of a magnificent grove of about one hundred acres, situated near the center and where the homestead buildings and shops are now local d. '•Mr. Sullivant having boen upon the larm but about a year, of course has made but little impression on the place his first object being to fence it, ho deqided to use the Osage Orange for the purpose his plan embracing a line of hedge around the outside, then dividing it into sections of 640 acres, and knowing that eventually roads would be needed, has laid out roads each way to be enclosed by a hedge on either side the whole embracing over two hundred miles of hedge, about eighty miles of which havo been put out the present season, on land broken up last summer—the preparation- being to plow four to six furrows, throwing tuem to the centre &nd petting on the ridge all low places being broken wider and thrown up to form a ridge, out of the influence of standing water. The balance of the rows are plowed this summer, preparatory to setting next spring. The plants already set are placed fifteen inches apart,^ and when grown up to a suitable size, will be cut or "plashed," and laid down in the line of the row.
On many of the more prominent elevations of the farm, which will eventually be desirable for building sites, se has set out fine groves of fast growing, deciduous trees, In addition to this vast work of hedges there havo been a thousand acres of land broken and put into corn. Should Mr. Sullivant's life and health be spared to develope this vast tract of land as proposed by him now, it will form one of the wonders of the world.
There is little doubt but this tract land is really tho finest body of equal size in tht United States."
A Komamic Episode of Real Life— From Penury 10 Wealth.
[From the Decatur (111,) Magnet.]
Mo3t, if not nearly all, of our citizens noticed a dilapidated vehicle, somewhat resembling a circus wagon, located on a vacant lot on North Main street, in which resided an old and poverty stricken man. Some time in the spring the. wagon, pro: polled by a couple of attenuated horses, arrived in this city, and the old man pitch ed his tent in the place mentioned, where, through the charity of the owners, he has since been permitted to dwell. Here he has lived ever since, eking out an existence by tho donations of our benevolent citizens, he having disposed of the horses for xmall sum. Yesterday, F. S. Murphy, Esq., one of our prominent lawyers, received a call from a Scotch gentleman named McGregor, who, after a long and weury search, had found the individual whom wo have thus described, and whom he identifies as the youngest son of the late Earl of Clanricarde, one of the wealthiest and most influential noblemen in Scotland. The store related by Mr. McGregor is almost marvelous in its details, and would furnish the materials for a first clasa throe-volume novel.
Some forty years since, the poor old man who has attracted the compassion of our citizens waa-a dashing and stylish officer in the Life Guards becoming enamored of a beautiful girl of humble origin, he married her in opposition to the commands of his proud father and remon strances of his equally proud elder brother. Being disinherited and thrown upon the world, he sold his commission, and with his wife came to this country.
After five years of vicissitudes upon a rugged farm in tho Western wilds, his wile died, and, brokon in spirit and sore in heart, he relinquished his claim and roamed without aim or purpose over tho country. During the Mexican war he onlisted as a private soldier, and served till the close of hostilities. Since then he has been the companion of roving Indians, a deck-hand on steamboats, a peddler, &c-, until his arrival in this city. By the death of his elder brother, which occurred about four months since, he has become the possessor of estates to the value of three hundred thousand pounds per annum. His good fortune, alas! has come too late. Prostrate in mind and enfeebled in body, he cannot realize, nor can he long enjoy, the princely fortune to which he has f'allon heir. Yesterday evening, in euro of Mr. McGregor, he embarked on the eastern train, en route for his lordly mansion in Inverness, Scotland. Fortune smiled too Into his early love sleeps by La Belle Rivieret and he lives a poor wreck of his former seif—too imbecilo to heed the frowns or smiles of fortune.— Reader, is not truth far stranger than fiction Events occur every day that outrival the wildest dreams of the poet or romancist. In this connection wo would state that much credit is due our friend, F. S. Murphy, Esq., for his laudable efforts in tracing up and proving the identity of this remarkable individual.
HIGH-HANDED ROBBERY.
A Lady Garroted on a Street Car in Eroaa Daylight and Robbed of $i,000 In Money—Arrest of One of the Perpctrtaors—The Other Escapes.
[From the Chicago Post, 26th.]
One of the boldest and most desperate robberios on record in the criminal anna's of tho world was perpetrated in this city 3'esterday aftornoon, a lady being garroted by one villain while $4000 was taken from her person by another. For stupendous audacity the transaction certainly eclipses anything of the kind which ever occurred in this city.
Among the wealthiest citizens of Chicago is Mrs. Catharine McCarty, residing on Cottage avenue. She is the owner of tho magnificent block on the northeast corner of "Washington and Dearborn streets, west of and adjoining Crosby's opera house. This valuable property, together with a large amount besides, located in different portions of the city, constitutes the McCarty estate. The collection of the rental of the differet buildings is made tho personal business of Mrs. McCarty.— From yesterday morning until three o'clock in the afternoon, she received in her office, room No. 12, No. 101 Dearborn street, from her various tenants, a sum amounting in all to $4,000. Shortly after three o'clock she started from her office, intending to proceed to her residence, on Cottage Grove avecue. No car being in sight, she walked slowly along State street, when, between Adams ana Quincy streets, she was overtaken by a car.
At the time of starting from the office,
she was followed by two n/en as as Monroe-street. At this poin one of the men increriged his gait, and pt-^ff J?er the otfcsr remaining a few feet wind. Mrs. McCarty, o. course, took no itotp ot thig. circumstance, the street car toeing crowded with comers and goer?. The two men, however, were observed, although their action was not considered peculiar at the time, still, since the occur-* rence of the robbery, the circumstance has been recalled.
The men were undoubtedly aware of ber destination and, of course, had knowledge of the fact of her having in her possession a large sum of money. So, when the avenue cur came alongside, the man in front stepped on the platform immediately in .front of Mrs. McCarty, the other being closo behind. The conductor at the time was inside the car collecting fares, and the rear platform was vacant. The first man reached the platform, and, unnoticed by the lady, who was mounting the steps, had closed the door. No sooner had Mrs. McCarty reached his aide than, with a rapid and skillful movement, he fastened his hands upon her throat and threw her upon the railing. Quick in lightning No. 2 was on hand, and wit'n a marvelous dexterity which could have only been acquired after long practice, rifled her pockets in a second's time, seen red her wallet containing $4,000, leaped Srom the platform and disappeared.
So ra idly was the affair ac-complished that it-failed to attract any attention from passers-by in tfaesUiet. But a gentleman sitting in the rear portion of ilio car saw and comprehended it all. He gave the alarm, and a general rush was made by the conductor and malt* pussengers to the rear of the platform 'Toe villain hud released his hold of the hulf-chokcd, terrified lady. and was in the act of leaping from the car, when he was collared and caught by two gentlemen, who, after a desperate struggle .succeeded in taking him into the car. Mrs.., McCarty, who was in a fainting conditi n, was assisted to a seat, and had the equivocal satisfaction of sitting face to face with ter gurroter, who was taken straight totbe Cottage Grove police statioD. and ikert: bunded over to Sergeant Craney.
It is ascertained tbiit, among numerous aliases, the man 1ms borne the name of Connertoa^ He is undoubtedly a.stranger in this city, little or nothing of his antecedents being known by tho police. His accomplice is unknown, he refusing to give his name.' Ilii description, however, is in the hands of the ititectives, who are sanguino of effecting his capture before he leaves tho city.
A Kilt tn the Cloud-A. Story for Marrivd Folks. Andrew Leo came home from his shop, where ho had worked all day, tired and out of spirits: came homo to his wife, who was also tired and out of spirits. "A smiling wife and a cheerful home —a paradise it would be!" said Andrew to himself, a3 bo turned his eyes from the cloniied face of Mrs. Lee, and sat down with knitten brows and moody aspect
Not a wcrd was spoken by either. Mrs. Lee was getting' supper, and she moved about with a weary step.
Andrew across and went to the table. He was tempted to speak an angry word, but controlled himself and kept silent. Ho could find no fault with tho chop nor the home-made bread, nor the fragment tea. They would hava cheered his inward tuan, if there had been a gleam of sunshine on the face of his wife. He noticed Bhe did not eat. "Are yiu not well, Mary?" The words were on his lips, but did not utter them, for the face of his wife looked so repellant, that he feared an irritating reply.
And so, in ooly silence, the. twain sat together until Andrew bad finished his supper.
As ha pushed his chair back, his wife arose ana commenced clearing off the table.
This is pergatory, said Lee to himself as he coinmence'l walking the floor of their little breakfast room, with hands thrust down into histrowsers pockets, and his chin almost touching his breast.
After removing nil the dishes and taking them into the kitchen, Mrs. Lee spread a green cover on the table, and placing a fresh trimmed lamp thereon, went out and shut the door after ber, leaving her husbandalonc with his unplesant feelings. He tooft a long deep breath as she did so, paused in his walk, stood still for some time, and when drawing a paper from his pocket, sat down by the taole, opened the sheet, and commenced reading. Singularly en ough, the words upon which his eyes rested were "Praise your wife:" They rather tended to.increase the disturbance of mind from which he was suffering. '•I should like to firrl some occasion for praising mine.' How quiokly his thoughts expressed that ill-natured sentiment. But his eyes were on the page before him, and ho read on. "Praise your wife, man for pity's sake give her a little encouragement. It won't hurt her."
Andrew Lee raised his eyes from the paper .and muttered "Oh, yes that's all very well, praise is cheap enough. But for what? For being sullen, and making her home the most disagreeable place in the world?" His eyes fell again to the paper. "She has made your homo comfortable, your hearth bright and shining, your food argeeable: for pity's sake tell her you thank her, if nothing more. She don't oxpect it it will make her eyes open wider then they have for ten years but it will do her good for all that, end you, too."
It seemed to Andrew as if this sentence just written for him, and just for the occasion. It was complete answer to his question, "Praise her for what?'' and he felt it also a rebuke. He read no futher, for thought came too busy and in a new direction. Memory was convicting him of injustice to his wife. She had always made his home as comfortable for him as her hands could muko it, and had ha offerrcd the light return of praise or commendation? Had he ever told her of the satisfaction he had known, or the comfort he had experienced? He was not able to recall the time or occasion. As he thouglh thus Mrs. Lee came in from the kitchen, and, taking her work-baskot from the closet, placing it on tho table, and setting down without speaking, began to sew. Mrs. Lee glanced almost stealthily at the work in her hands, and saw that it was the bosom of a shirt, which she *as stiching neatly. He knew that she was at work. "Praise your wife," The words wore before the eyes of his mind, and ho could not look away from them. But Lo was not ready for this yet. He still felt moody and unforgiving. The expression of his wife's face he interpreted to mean ill-na-ture for which he had no patience. His eyes fell upon tho newspaper that lay spread out before him, and ho read the sentance. "A kind, cheerful word, spoken in a gloomy house, is the little raft in tho cloud that lets the sunshine though."
Lee struggled with himself a while longer. His own ill-nature had to be conquered first his moody, accusing spirit had to be subdued. He thought of manv things to say, yot he feared to say them less his wife should meet his address with a cold rebuff. At last, leaning toward her, and taking holt of the spirit bosom upon which she was at work, he said in a voice carefully modulated with kindness: "Yeu are doing the work beautifully, Mary."
Mrs. Lee made no reply. But her husband did not fail to notico that she lost almost instantly, that right erectness with which she had been setting nor that the motion of her needle had ceased. "My shirts are better made, and whiter than those cf any other man in the shop," said Lee, encouraged to go on. "Are they?'' Mrs. Lee's voice was low and had in it a slight hnskiness. She did turn her face, but her husband saw that she leaned a little toward him. He had broken the ice of reserve, and all was
easy now. His hands were among the clouds at.d a feeble ray was already straggling through the rift it had made. "Yea, Mary," he answered softly "and I've heard it more than once, whatagood wife Andrew Lee must have." Mrs. 1/^ turned her face toward her h'wb^nd. There was light in it, and light iru eye. But there was something iru j,e pression of the countenance
"Do you?'! It

puzzled him. "Don't you think so?'' \he asked, quite soberly. "Wnat a question 1' ^ejaculated Andrew Lee starting up and going round the table where his wife

"Yes dar) ,ng." was the warmly spoken answer, ar.d jj0 stooped down and kissed her. "Fi0w strange that you should ask me
question!"
"If you would only il me so now and therJ Andrew it would do me good." Mri.Lee arose, and^ieaning ber face against '.be manly breast of her husband, stood and wept.
What a strong light broke in upon the mind of Andrew Leo. He had never given his wife even the small reward of praise for the loving interest she had mitiilesied ditty, until uoubt of his love had entered her soul, and made the light all around her thick darkness. No wonder t'nat ber face grew clouded, nor what he considered moodiness and ill nature, took position of her spirit. "You ara good and true, Mary, my own dear wife 1 am proud of you—I love you, and my first desire is for your hapiness. O, if I could always see your face in sunshine, my home would be the dearest place on earth." "How precious lo me are youc words of love and praise, Andrew," said Mrs. Lee, smiling up through her tears into his face. "With them in my ears, my heart cull never lie in shadow"
How easy had been the work for Andrew Lee. He had swept his hand aoros3 the^cloudy horizon, and now the bright sun-shine was streaming down, and flooding that home with joy and beauty.
