Fruits and Thst Should be Katss. —A medical journal has some re marks on the subject of I raits, which arc in tome respects, nt variance with views .generally entertained and are of interSt to our readers now, when fruits are so plenty. It says that fruits afford an end leii supply of dclicious and wholesome food, but as tboy are utually taken, may more properly ba considered at dangerous luxuries than as healthy food. The great error in their use consists in making thorn a desert, in overloading the stomach with them, and enting them at all timet1 between meals When taken along with •ur fo, d, as food, and in moderation, they are highly conduc veto heilih.
The peach is the mo?t delicious and iuottible of stone fruit3. They should term part of each meal, or be eaten mod'.•ralely when the stomach is empty.
Piu'o are less digestibU- all pulpy itone fruiis aro more or less so, and prone to fermant in the stomach.
Tbc apple is oue of the best of fruits, •ind when baked will agree with tbe most dt licate stomachs, and is most excellent iu sickness p,-ars aro also good, and strawberries ur? wholesome fruit, but they should not bo eaten With ice cream.
There is nothing more wholesome than xvateruielons.

His interest in the public good has caused his connection with the State Board of Agriculture, and be holds that the commonwealth first was in the foun* dittion or source of wealth by the cultivation of the soil, and next to that the encouragement of the mechanio arts. He deals in all kinds of Agricultural instruments «Dd mechanical productions.

Etymolooy of the Word Hoosntn.— The venerable and witty Riv. Dr. Wood, in hi3 farewell discourse to hin chtrge in Michigan City, on the evening nf the .eventh instant, gave the fo'.lowiug account of tho true origin" of tho word "Hoosler," which we suppose is about as true as any of the half doz-in stories we have seen of the origin of the word: "When the Ohio Palls canal was boing oonstructod a number of Indinnians ana Kentuckiaos were thrown together on the :vork, the result being a continual war between the representatives of tho rival States, in rao?t every encounter tho •'Corncrackers" proving victorious, until '.heir opponents began to regard them, as '.hoy claimed to be 'half horso, half allirator, and able to whip anything mortal.
In the southern part of this State, about '.his time, was a Polo—an ex-officer undsr Napoleon, who gave leoturos on the war, in whioh he took occasion to praise up his own troops—tho famous Hussars—to such •in extent, that tho impression conveyed to nig hearers was, that tfce Hussars—or HooBurs, as he pronounced it—wore invincible, worso oven than the 'half boss —ha1' alligator' Kentuckiuns. At least this wns the idea that a young man by ihc name of Short had of them, who bad listens I in brntthlois admiration to tbe lecturer's thrilling description. Wall, Hh'irt wont down to work on the canal and boing a nuw comar, was immediately -ot upon by the Keutucky bullies, for tho •mrpo9e of trying his metal. Tbe metal was good nnd ho thrashed three of the Corncrakora' in succession. Throwing ip liif Int. and giving a yoll, he oxclaim---.d Tin a Hoosior 1' This is the true rigin of tho word, and there aro persons the State who knew this boy (Short) and tbe incident."
Cowhiding EXTRAORDINARY—AMabkied LADY Inbultkd—THE HUSBAND'S Revenge.—About ten o'clock this morning a well known grocer, whose name we have been unable to obtain was seen .^murging from an ailey on South street with a pair of .imber nine boots in close iroximitv to hi* coat toil. He was evilently in a hurry. It seems that he bad become enamored of the personal appearance of a respectable married lady, residing on that street, and had intimated i.o tho servant girl that $50 would be no object to obtain an interview. In fact he flas ready to squnnder that amount of currency fur the felicity of a single hour in h- sweet pretence. The proposition was made in this form by the servant girl to her oiistroc?, who like a true wife, told norhiuband of tbo insult and asked his advice. The first impulse of the enraged busbscd was to wring hia neck, but I upon reflection, he determined to -tet a trap for tbe gentleman and warm his jacket. By his adviua the wie absented to an interview at the house, and ten o'clock this morning was named as the blissful hour. Prompt to the minute the festive dealer in dandelion coffec, brooms and sich, made his appearanoe, disguised in a cioan shirt, a broadc loth c(-at, and other stunning paraphernalia. He was evidently gotten up or tho occasion. He knocked timidly at the front donr, and was ushered into the parlor by the servant girl. Ho was not kept long in suspense. The back door opened, and in camo the lady with her husband. Mr. Grocer turned very red in the face and grew very pale. The husband made no apology, for an appearance in his shirt sieevos, but procoeding to bu--iness, drew a heavy raw hide from his vest pattern, and began to lay it on in fehrful earnest. Tbe blows fell thick and fast. Mr. Dandylion begged piteously, Out the irate husband only sand-papered him the more fiercely, and ho wus glad to wape by the back door with his life. Ho went out tho back gate and out the alley is though he had been shot out of a cannon.—Lafayette Courier.

The Railroad Builder.—Gen. Burn' side seems to be indispensable to all rail road projects in this State. The old Martinsville road bad run out entirely, and tho matter of revival was talked of for years without effecting anything. SudJenijr Gen. Burnside appeared on tbe scene and drooping confidence was revived and tbe road trnuilt, in a few months, although tbe majority of tbe people of Morgan county preferred a line to this city, The Vincennes road, after many spasmodic attempts at a beginning, had a visit from Burnside, and the work is to go on at once and most vigorously. For years the building of a road due north has been under consideration. Companies would organise, spend a good deal of time and talk on routes, and die out. At last anew company is organised, andlol every one says the the rood will soon be built, for Gen. Burns de's name appears among the managers. T'lat is the open sesame of all obstructions to raiirwad enterprise Whenever Burnside appears, the music of the pick and the shoTel soon follows.—tnd. Oom. .* .* .4. -fi 4,

CARD TO thb PUBLIC.—The undersigned, Trustees of the Riverside Institute, an institution chartered by the Stat of New Jersey, for the maintenance and education of the orphans of the Soldiers and Sailors of our whole eountry, which is b«ng established and endowed by tbe enterprise and patriotism of the Washington Library Company of Philade!. phia, would announce to tbe public that in their opinion, tbe efforts being made by that Company for the establishment and endowment of the Riverside Institute cannot fail of success. Their agencies have been established, and their adver tisements published throughout the country at great expense, and the results are now being realised. If the distribution were to take place, and the labors oi tbe Company cease on the 2Sth iust^ as advertised, the institution, though established, would not have provided the means for a proper and permanent continuance, nor could it be so extensively useful as^the public and the Truetees dosire.
Alter mature consideration, wo have therefore recommended that the Washington Library Company postpone theii distribution until the 8th of January cext, and continue the sale of certificates and engravings until that time, under the firm belief that the result will assuredly provide a permanent home lor tbe maintenance and education of very many ot tbe orphans of those who have died in the service of the country.
