ANATOMrOAL CHARACTER.
Consumption, as all are aware, means a consuming or wasting away, and was originally applied to many diseases afflicting different organs of the body, having no symptoms in oommon except emaciation. They were callcd consumptions because of this emaciation. But the use of this term led to confusion among medical writer.? and made it necessary to designate the kind of consumption meant, by prefixing tho name of the affected organ. Laennec, the author of Mediate Ascultation, and inventor of the stethoscope, in his extensive researches into the pathology of tho lungs, found that small granular bodies always exist in the lungs in genuine consumption. These bodies are called tubercles, and sineo this discovery tho term consumption has been restricted to disease of the lungs and called tubercular consumption. But do not suppose that I wish you to understand that this fell disease is whoby restricted to the lungs, for tho development and workings of tho disease in this organ, is only part, or fragment of a great constitutional malady. Tubercles themselves, aro oomposed of unorganized matter, deposited from the blood of a yellowish color, opaque, friuble, and about the firmness and consistency of choose, and its formation is closely linked with the scrofulous diathesis. At first a tubercle is deposited in the state of a fluid exudation from the capillaries in the lame manner as lymph is in this con dition it insinuates itself into the insler slices of the lung tissue, passes through the lining membrano of the air vessels, and their interior. It now co-agulat.es and constitutes a foreign, solid, body, which can only be removed by being again broken down and rendered capable of being either absorbed or expectorated. The softening or slow death of this tubercular deposit, constitutes true ulceration, a process that is liable to occur at any time, and #hich is more or less extensive, according to the amount and extent of tho morbid deposit. One very important fact is, that tubercles when they afioct the lungs are not deposited at random qr indifferently all parts of this organ but it is in the upper lobes in nearly all cases they first commence their destruction. It is here where they arc the largest aud most numerous. It is hero also that they first ripen and grow soft, and become ready for expulsion through the bronchia and trachea, consequently it is here we have the most frequent, the most numerous and the largest excavations in the luugs. As I before alluded in my letter upon bronchitis. we have in many instances a different type of consumption to deal with in the west than that of the tubercular, and this I denominate a softening, or more properly a ea tarrh or the lungs. For an example we may take a case of consumption as it occurs in tho New England States. How many of you have noticed a young lady or young gentleman, in the pri.ne of life, and apparently in tho enjoy, ment of good health, eye bright, voice clear, complexion clear and fair, with what you may call a beautiful flush upon the oheek, sc. Suddenly they are attacked with a pain in the chest, or bleeding from the lungs, and finally a cough. The skin changes somewhat to a waxy appearance, but still retains its blush, the eye is a little brighter than usual, but the destructive disease rapidly runs its course and the patient suddenly dies of tubercular consumption, jthe upper organs of the air-passages usually left in a healthy condition. Now how different are the symptoms of the type wo have to deal with hero. Tho disease comes on gradually and insiduously, fir.-t in the form of a catarrh. Tho nasal passage to speak plainly become rotten from disease, the throat becomes affected, and bronchitis is set up, the air passage* become clogged with mucus, the blood in passing through the lungj is not arteriali zed ulceration or softening of the lungs commences, tho patient becomes billiou*, the liver tropid und inactive, the bowels constipated, the voico hoarse, tho throat sore, the he-id rotten and full of corruption, the eye dull and yellow and the pa tient gradually sinks and dies and needlessly, wo say, becauso the^e catarrhs that have gradually led to this accumulation of evils might be easily remedied if taken in time. But I shall have more to say in respect to the destructive features of this disease io giving you the symptoms of consumption.
CONSUMPTION.
To enter into a full and complete investigation of the causes of consumption would occupy more space here than I am able to give it. Suffice it to say that careful investigation ard observation of those minds devoted entirely to this disease, have established the fact that tbo imuie diate cause is disorder of the nutritive functions, and mal-assimilation of blood, causing first, impoverishment of the blood Second, local exudations into the lung, which present the character of tubucular exudation, and third, owing to tho successive formation and softening of these, and the ulceration which follows in the pulmonary tissues, the destructive results that distinguish the disease. Among the remote causes producing this result we may mention first, as the most prominent hereditary predisposition, cr the scrofulous diathesis and again, vitiated atmosphere, changeable temperature, certain unhealthy occupations, humidity, particular localities, absence of light, excessive sexual indulgence, female diseases and so on, predispose to consumption.
The human constitution is governed by two forces, the nervous and vegetative. The former disposes the particles composing the body to a state of motion, the latter inclines them to a state of rest. So constant is the aetion of these two forces, that they may bo compared to a whirlpool into which the particles of matter ors poured under the influence of the vegetative powers, and out of which they are constantly whirled by the nervous force.
When the vegetative force transcends the nervous, there is no waste, but particles of matter are constantly laid down faster than old ones are taken up, .the body in weight, nutrition is more

Dr. Hale on Consumption Having fully, and I think clearly given the symptoms and tendency of Nasal Catarrh, Throat diseases and Bronchitis, I now come to speak of that most common and extensively fatal disease, Tubercular Phthisis or Pulmonary Consumption. And that the reader may be able to understand something of the workings of tbi3 disease I will first glance at its
submerged field nothing can
tem that which is designed foe its renewal nutrition ie .at an end. Now the blood commences to secure that true tuberculous matter in the delicate air-cells and on tho surface of the lining of the numerous air passages.
Now, I wish to call your attention to the next chain of causcs tbat produce the majority of pulmonary complaints in the west. It may bo proper to style this bronchial consumption, and softening of the parenchyma of tho lungs. This result is induced by neglected catarrhs, throat disease and bronchitis, the catarrhal disease, vitiating tho blood, destroying the digestive apparatus, prostrating tho vital process, and completely deranging tho normal functions of animal life. This disease is too often neglected uutil it is lost tight of in ihe disastrous consequences to which it gives rise. How many are there all around us The yo'ing, the most gifted and moat beautiful of the human race, that are destined to fill a consumptive grave, from theso us they call simple complaints, only a "alight catarrh," or "throat difficulty," a littlo cough ot no consequence,', but, however slight they may be, they steadily transform the bright ruddy. f^aUires-of health to thfl dull wan, listloHness of pre-^ mature age| And wnon hopo is vain and life a mockery, comes tko stereotyped advice of a "return of health in the spring," "acbsiuge of climate," "a visit to Minnesota, or the country." But alas the country referred to is that which lies beyond tho confinc3 of the festering ^rave, and the spring, tho season that blooms eternal when life's Stfjl fever ia over.
SYMPTOMS OF CONSUMPTION. About thu first notioaable syrr.ptonu of consumption is u. sense of ''Wrfarisoinoness aid languor occasionally, "slight, flying pains about tho slumlders and broust," a peculiar sentitivoness to cold" "shortness of breath upon moving quick, r,r exercising a littiu more than uitistl."— The next moEt prominent feature is a "dry hacking cough," increased frequency of pulse,-" the "losing a little flesh," soreness of the chest, and a feeling of wotght."— Finally, tho cough increases in soverity, the destruction of the lungs becotno morec rapid, and expectoration increased in quantity, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrliosa and night swo*t3 supervene pro* fu bleeding at times Sometimes, swelling of the ankles, and pufftioss of tho hands and fhce tolls us that thedisea30 Is about to reuch a fatal termination.
The ion going,, under-tand, are the general symptoms of oonsumptions, they do not occur in all cases.. Some puss thro' the various stages of the disease without any pain to speak of, and in many, hem orrhago does not ocour at all, and soma retain what they call good appetite to tbo last. But we will generally find many of tho leading symptoms present
TREATMENT OF CONSUMPTION. The study of cauaos and symptoms of Consumption should bo interesting to all and it' they wero hotter understood by tl masses there would be less of tho disease, but however interesting the study might be, there is one point oi still more import ar.ee to the public involved in the ques tion is consumption curable and if not, why not Is it true thero are many cases of consumption where in tho third or last stage, medication with a view of cure by any method or remedies would be ut terly usoless but to cure such would be indeed miraculous but that consumption —genuine tuberculous disease of tho lungs, can bo cured in nine cases out of tea, if there i3 any vitality left, I know and in catarrh, throat and bronchial dis cases there need not bo a failure.
Now lot me ask you what is done by tho old practice in tho attempt to cure this disease? I will tell you what I meet with nearly every day in examining new cases, and inquiring into previous treatment, and it is no uuusual thing to find thorn taking a mixture of "squills," and a an to a dynes" to diminish irritability und cause of (deep a mixture of "catechu, gallic acid," "tannin," or other astringents to check diarrhea "acetate of lead and opi um," to diminish bleeding "sulphuric acid drops," to relieve tho sweating, and probably "cd-livor oil" in addition.— With a mass of bo'tles and boxes at the budsldo sufficient to start a small drug store, without its ever suggesting itself to tho physician that the stomach so drench ed with nausoating things is unable to perform its functions.
And now wbon we add to this the "countor irritant*" they use, such as "Se ton's blisters, or pusinlatiou by tartar emetic ointment," with the stomaoh drenched internally, aud thu surface covered with sores, what wonder is there that tho patient dies
Now let us inquire, what is to be done to cure consumption Why, arrest the further formation of tubercular deposits cause the absorption of tubercle already deposited, and the reducing of inflama ticn und soreness, and the healing of the cavities formed by softened and broken down tuberculous matter that has been expectorated.
We have already shown that consump* ti ni is a general und also a local diseaso then should it not have both a gonoral and a local treatment? Nothing is moro plain and in accordance with common sense, than Ibis proposition. Yet for centuries tho disease has been treated only by dosing -Lhe stomach with drugs. What ia the consequence? Consumption has be cometh 'terror of mankind, sweeping off yearly in the United States ono hundred and twenty thousand victims! A disease styled by the rtyulars, incurable.— But do not infer from the above th tt I do not give medicines by the stomaoh when they aro indicated, for I claim that it re quires both tho local und general treat ment to effect a cure oi this d.seaso.
Why do we apply ft wish or an ointment to di-enso upon the surface of the body? B. cause of Us rjet curative effect, by tho application of tho remedy to the disease
Now, reader, lot mo a^k you, would these washes and ointment, applied by way of the stomach, have this effect? Would tbey cure the disease? Common sense ut onco tells you they would do no good. Now we want to stop the further formation of tuberculons matter, also the inflammation and ulceration, and heal tho cavities. But you may say that we can not take medicines into tho lungs! Very true, the lungs were mada to receive air, and not for th•? introduction of soli*! or fluid substance? but these solid and fluid substances may be reduced to vapor and inhaled into the lung-: and they will manifest at once ail the virtue they possess improvement in tho patient will be at once perceivcd. If physicians could apply washes to the mucous membrane of tbo air-passagrs, they woul.t do soatonce but because they can tu-t do this they bave treated the disease by general reme dies through the stomtch only de-erting the principle of direct local medication, and the consequeoco has been, as we all know, death!
No ono will dispute that inhaling into the lungs certain poison'om gases dlrcctly affects them injuriously, and in many instances eanses death. Many persons have lost their lives by breathing pure air.
