Autumn Days.
"When auUimn days come, Nature, liken rolircJ morchatit, cliauges its mftn nor from thrift find bustling industry to Innguid lbUurcund to ostentatious luxury Tho sun rises later und sets earlier thau when it bad all the summer's crops on hand, and was playing universal husbandman. There is no nect-building now, and no bird singing—which is a purely do^ mestic arrnhgotnent, designed on the birds'port to keep peace in tbe family while, the children are being raised, and laid aside cs soon as tho young birds are off their hunda. Mornings come fleeced in mists, which hang over streams and low, moist places. The sun plays with thum, but they perish in his arms. A few belated flowers jot keep watch, but chiefly tho asters, which fringe the fields, star tho edges of forests, and, like a late comer at a feast, seems bent upon making up for lost time. At night, crickets and katydids scrapc their shrill viols, and fill the air with stridulous music. Over all the shrinking fields, the trees lift up their gorgeous foliage, and, like those who wait for the.marriage-bell and the bride-groom, they Bhinoout in glorious a]»par«l.
The hill?, forest-clad, are becamo the Lord's younger sons, are like Joseph, they are dressed in a coat of many colors. October days, short between tho horizons, reach higher into the vault than any days of the year and through them tho season seems to look with soften sadness, as one who, in the calm of age, mediates on all. tho mistakes of tho past life, and solemnly thinks upon the advancing future. Along the fcnce rows, where seeds nnd late berries may bo found, birds hop silently, as if ashamed to be seen. Soon they will change their solitary ways and collect in flocks. To day tho fields, will swarm with them- to-morrow, there will not be one left and they will be picking their food many degrees of latitude south.
A Stoby is tcld of a brawny raftsman who approached tho Southern Hotel in St. Louis just as tho excitement over the reception of General Sheridan was at its climax. He asked a bystander, "What is all this'about!" Tito man being a bit of a wag, and se'eing the raftsman was a little unsophisticated, replied: "It is a great celebration in honor of McCoole" The raftsman immediately became interested, and exclaimed:' "What! tho man thatlickea Jones I must see him anyhow," and ho pressed forward. Juft then his oyes fell upon a little man who was speaking, and he asked another spectator—"Is that himT'""""''-Thiit's"hira,'' was the reply, thinking he spoke of Sheridan. The big timber driver lookM at tbe speaker fixedly for half a minute, and thenEaid: "Wall, if that's SleCooiu, Aaron Jones aint worLh a cuss. Gall eucli a little squirt of a man nfighter!'and so saying he turned away in evident disgust.
A Body Petrified.
A woiunn, wifo of a blacksmith, who formerly lived on Broadway, and who died some seventeen years ago, was interred in 0110 of the burial grounds on the hill. Last week her friends went there for tho purpose of removing the body. On opening tho grave, the coffin crumbled to pieces, and the body lay there as whole as when deposited. The skin was black and covered with a substance similar to uioss and presented a mold appearance. On feeling of tho body it was found to bo quite hard, and futher examination developed tho fact that it whs petrified. The black surface was serapedoff the skin, when the latter presented a beautiful appe*rauce, like that cut marble. Our informant says a coffin in which a child of his wi,s close J, and which had been in the earth twenty years, appeared as well as the day it was placed in tho ground.—Albany Knickerbocker.
The Death of ihe Vines. No crop is more uncertiin than that of vines A really good vintage occurs on!y at considerable ktervals, ior the vinogrowor ia exposed to many disaster. Extreme cold in winter may destroy his plants—a Hidden frost iu Alay may blight the who.o crop fcf tho year. Four years ago a single hour's frost in the district round Cognac dertroyed three millions sn rliiig wortu of properly. The evening before the vineyard* wore clothed in the brightest green at six the next morning was to be seen but brown, burnt leaves, as if an eight plague had passed over_lhe land. Oa~ all sides groups of peasant proprietors, men, wotne-i andchildien. were gathered together in the early morning, weeping, as men weep, with little noite but big tears, over their ruin. They had lost tneir income, and, for small fortunes, this is the all.
He Won't Go in Again.
A writer says: I recollect ouce seeing a brother of the Congregation of Souls standing at the door of the chapel, with a plata in bis hj.nd, begging for them, and saying, "Whoever will put a real into this plate will deliver a soul from purgatory." A wag came up, put the coin, but then said, "Tell me, brother, do you believe that the soul is already out?" "Thero can be no doubt of it," replied the brother. "Then IU take back-my money," said the otli "for that soul won't be such a fool as to go in again.'
Death of a Vcieran.
Another veteran of the war of 1812 departed this life on Friday, in Albany Schroeder, one of the last, if not the
last, survivor of the war wfca aerred under Perry on Lake Erie, expired on Friday. He was born in Holland,-and bad been impretsed by the British. He was & guDner on the flagship of the American fleet at the time of the victory on Lake Erie, and there he lost his right arm. He was very aged, but retained his mental faculties almost to the last, and was very devout and constant communicant of the Episcopal church.
