To-night wili be given the beautiful r'-m-intic drama of tho ''Marblo Heart." Thu will be remembered as the drama so finely rendered by tho'Buchanans on the occasion of their last, visit. I—-Secretary Hoimes and
Superintendent Sullivan have arrived in the city, and have opened an office in the Terre Haute House, where they wiil be happy to Bieet everybody who wants to talk Fair. Those of our citizens who contemplate exhibiting articles will find this place, and the present week the most con* venient and pleasant opportunity to make their ontrie3, as they will thereby avoid the confusion incident to u.e rush that must come riest week besides, by making their entries now, they will afford a better opportunity to those who come from abroad. Already quite a number of entries have been made, and the" reports from all quarters indicate the largest industrial exhibition ever held in the West.
It is now definitely ascertained that several of the fastest horses in the country will bs at the Fair to compete for the $1,000 premium.
Died—Sunday, 22 inst., of diptheria, Edwin Fernando, son of Ferdinand and Ida Schmidt, aged five years.
Funeral this (Tuesday) afternoon, at three o'clock, from the residence of the parents, on Chestnut street, between 13th and 14th streets. Tho friends are invited to attend without further notice.
Sunday morning while the fire
was raging near Thompson's mill, the barn attached to the naw residences, in rourse of erection by Mr. J. D. Darly, on Ohio street, was set on fire. It was fortunately discovered in timo by Col. Stewart and tho fire extinguished. Yesterday moming about four o'clock it was fired ngair. and again a timely discovery was made by an early rising sorvantgirl.
Had the flames attained headway while tho Fire Department was fighting tho fire on First Hroflt, there is no telling to what oxtont the devouring element would hare swept along the wooden buildings, on Mnin between Sixth and Seventh streets,

beautiful
drama of the "Marble Heart, or the Sculptor's Dreirn," was finely rendered by the stock company on Saturday night, and we are happy to say it was fully appreciated by an appreciative audionce. It has been frequently played at the Metropolitan during past seasons, but no previous presentation wiil equal that of the present company on S.uurday evening- The part of Kuphael Duchatlot, the sculptor, was admirably rendered by Manager Lingham, in lact we have never seen it bettor done, if rqualled, 'Mi sKate Fletcher, in ihepart oi Mudemoiselle Marco, was exceedingly happy, she always plays well. Miss Preston as Mariette deserves the highest encomiums. In fact, when all the company did so well, it is difficult to purticuJarize. Wehopethit the "Marble Heart" will l=e frequently presented, if it can bo with the same caste as on Saturday night.
The Metropolitan will bo closed until Thursday night in order to prepare for ihe presentation of the Black Crook, by Mr. Barras, its author. It will be the mo magnificent spectacular drama ever presented upon the Metropolitan boards.— We understand that Manager Lingham will open with his Company in Terre Haute on Monday night, at Dowling's Hall, and will remain thera two weeks.— We commend the Metropolitan company as in every way worthy the support of the citizons of Terre Haute, and we assure them the gratification will far exceed the outlay. Mr. Lingham is a gentleman and understands his business thoroughly.

Prof. Hennicg Jenson, a magician,
was performing at Dubuque, Iowa, on Friday-evening. He made the offer to any one in the room to shoot him with a pistol loaded with a ball. The trick consists in fixing a tube to the end of the ramrod which withdraws the charge instead of ramming it In the barrel. The tube became detached leaving the pistol loaded. The magician was shot in the he*d and wounded fatally.
S&' The New Castle Courier says, tha community was thrown into a fever of excitement, on Saturday evening last, by the sudden and violent sicknes of numerous persons in attendance upon the fair, and the tracing, as it was thought, of the whole difficulty of eating a portion of a cheese being retailed on the ground. Subsequently, it was discovered that at least three-fourths of those who had partaken of the cheese the evening before, had been Miado violently ill, so that in all, some thirty or forty persons are supposed to have been similarly affeoled, and some of them with most violent vomiting and other arsenical poisoning. All were better in a few hours, and some of them were nearly or quite well in less than twenty-four hours alter thoy were taken siok. A portion of the offending cheese has been sent to a practical chemist for analysis, and in the meantimo doubts of the cheese being poisonous at till seem to be fast gaining groun I.
We cordially endorse the follow*
ing items clipped from the Indianapolis Journal: An accommodating and gentlomanly railway conductor is a blessing to all trveleft. We juako tho distinction because not all nor nearly all of that profession, ara of the class specified. A recent visit to Terre Haute over that particularly good road—the Terre Haute and Indianapolis—brought us into contact with two conductors who?.e courtexy and solicitude for the well-being of passengers entitle them to honorable mention, viz: Mr. E Shartle and Mr. Chambers, an opinion that we havo heard many another recipient of attention at their hands ex-* press.
That excellent hotel, the Terre Haute House, nevor more nearly filled what is understood by the phrase, "a first class hot.il,'' than under its present manage" ment. To its usual catalogue of merits, suoh as commodious, airy and well furnished rooms, excellent bill of fare, cleanliness, accommodating, proprietor and clerks, mu3t now be added the artesian well and bath house. We mention this because it is opportune in view of the approaching State Fair, when visitors will want to know where the best hotel accommodations can be obtained. To such and all others "whom It may concern," we say register at the Terre Haute House.

"An ex-editor of this city, and country editor in town seeing the elephant, yesterday took into tbeir heads to drink another well-known citizen drunk. On the twenty-fifth round, country editor went to grass, and was carried off on a shutter.— On the thirtieth the ex-editor went un ier, leaving the citizen master of the Jeld, straight as a shinglo. An old coiored man, named Alexander White, was brutally murdered at Salem, Saturday evening last. He went to church that evening, and his presence was objected to by certain parties, who had attempted to drive him away on former occasions. The old man was heard talking with his supposed murderers a short time before the murder cries of murder were distinctly heard by the oitizens, and a crowd was at onoe collected. The body of tho old man was found weltering in blood, with the blade of a dagger still sticking in his heart, and a wound upon his head as from a blow with some blunt instrument. Two parties strongly suss poctod of the deed have skedadled for part* unknown. Tho knife with which the murder was committed was identified as belonging to one of thom.
S&*A. special to the Indianapolis Journal gives the following details of a murder committed at Fort Wayne, Saturday night
Two negroes, named Ryall and Brooks have had for several days a grudge between them, growing out of a gambling debt, amounting to a dollar and a half, owed by Brooks to Ryall. It is said that Brooks threatened, several days ago that he would kill Ryall if they met, andshapened a knife for that purpose. They came together last night in front of Ryall barber shop, and an altercation followed, in which Ryall made repeated domands for tho money, which Brooks was either unwilling or unable to pay. Ryall then soized Brooks by the throat, when Brooks drew a knife* and stabbed Ryall six times in the left breast and stomach. The evidence of the physician before the cori.ner's inquest this morning showed that either of the wounds would have poduced dd.uh. The murderer was at oace arrested and is now in j-iil await) ag a hearing before a magistrate to-morow.— His plea is self defense, but It is tdought the threats made by |hioi can be proved. Raiuoad Wax.—The Indianap- BUSf NC olia and St. Louis Railroad company is .#€V pushing matters as rapidly as possible. It Uhas made application for the right of way through the oity. In the meantime the project of the new road from Terre Haute to St. Louis, to ran in connection with the Terre Haute and Indianapolis road ic making headway, and it is not improbable that both lines will be running independent to St. Louis in a few yean. By the way the fortunes of the proposed road from St. Louis to Terre Haute affords a carious illustration of the rapid changing of interests. The air litie route was first marked out as a rival lino to the Terro Haute, Alton and St. Louis road, which at first refused to come into a general arrangement with the Terre Haute, Bellefontaine and other roads of the northern line. The Terre Haute and Alton road was finally frightened into terms, and the air-line was abandoned by the roads which began it. Now its revival is to defeat the projects of the very man who first began it—lntL CommereiaU $$$£ jf?
