Monday Morning, September^ ISd,

Confiscating the Public I tebU-r---(From the Stat* Journal.) The

Herald,

in commenting on Gov

ernor Morton's letter, takes definite ground in favor of obliterating the national debt immediately

in greenbacks.

This is as we would b»*e it. We de«ire to mark the fact and have the public do likewise. We propose to hold the organ and party leaders to the responsibility of this position, which -is nothing but repudiation, Some of the reasons given by the Herald

are very startling, and we with-

our readers to consider them if .It says: "But if the whole debt should be paid greonbackfi at once,, and the interest stopped, provided the revenues of the government for 1836 are maintained, the current expenditures brought down to a sum double to what they were ia 1860, and the bonded debt reduced by the issue of greenbacks to the amount equal to the national bank currency, the whole amoutit of the indebtedness thus coverted would be absorbed by the revenues iu about three and a half years." [,

The revenues of 1866 did "pay sottifeth* ing over $100,000,000 on the debt after defraying the other expenses. The flational Bunk currency is $275,000,000, which it says can be assumed and thus pay off an equal amount of bonds.

As to roducing the other expenditures of the Government to merely double what they were before the war, that is an impossibility but supposeit is done, for the •alee of argument. This would pay $250,000,000 per year out of the revenues or $750,000,000 in three years, taking it for grunted that all interest is Btopped by having the whale debt paid in greenbacks. To the $750,000,000 thus paid add the $275,000,000 paid L.y cancelling bank bonds, and we have $1 025,000,000 paid in this smashing way, but have unfortunately over $1,400,000,000 of indebtedness left. The

Herald's

Here again, the

calculation

is wrong only to the amount of. $1,400,• 000,000. Surely men who make such calculation are crazy or (grossly ignorant of the simple rules of arithmetic. It is by such false and ignorant calculations and by supposing impossibilities that it is attempted to deceive the people and sugar-coat direct repudiation. Again it

says: "denator Morton is opposed to the ims mediate payment of tfce bonded debt in greenbacks, because as he states it, the issue of that amount ot currency would bo fatal to the credit and prosperity of the country. If w« are not mistaken, tin amount equal tj the present bonded indebtedness was issued during the war, a&d when the prospect of its ultimate payment wafc, to say the least, somewhat doubtful, without any fatal effects 'to the credit and prosperity of the country-'

Herald

blunders terri

bly. The bonded debt now is over $1,732.000, but the greenback circulation Sever exceeded $150,000,000, which is the whole ever authorized to be issued. The demand notes, after the issue of greenbacks, compound interest nous and sev-en-thirties nfiver entered into the general circulation, but were from the first held by banks and capitalist? because the demand notes were roceivable for customs, and the other drew interest and were held as bonds. The general circulation, including greenbacks, national oank notes, and notes of State banks, never at any time exceeded $900,000,000, and perhaps hot over $800,000,000, which is considerably less than one-half of the bonded indebtedness. The

Herald

ken .to the amount of nearly $9,000,000,* 000. Be it understood, then, that the

Herald,

the organ of the democracy, is iii

favor of tho immediate issue of greonbacks to an amount equal to the whole national debt and of compelling our crod* itors at once to receive them in paymont of bonds and debts of whatever kind, and this is in accordance with the views of Senator Hendricks, Dun Voorhees, J. E McDonald, and the Democratic leaden of the State generally.

Tho whole amouut of greenbacks required by this plan can be computed as follows: lotal debt Us« tbe casta

In tlieTr«»aui-y 83,402,783,303 From which aeiiuci ai outstanding—Greou. (jacks $265,104,844 k.: Fractional (Juriauot.... 29,Sill,172

Balance J2,0»8,!U8,0i7 And this last would be the amount of greenbacks required to pay the debt, and makind a uutii total of currency of $2,402,783,365, whiuh is more than the united currency of England, JFrauce, Russia, Prussia and Austria. It would then come up to what Brick Pomeroy said, fiat "it would take a hatful to buy a hat."

In thus proposing to wipe out the nationul debt tho

Herald

never so much as

mentions contracts, times and modes of payment, making no distinction between bonds, but would strike out all by ono sweeping measure. It would be just as honorable and infinitely better for tbe ccuntry if Congress were to pass an act, directly and in a straightforward manner, repudnuius tho whole debt. The..proposition amounts to this, but its authors are as yet too cowardly to avow it. iUscality go monstrous will disgust the pvibTic mind. It will be its own antidote.

We notice another small mistake. The

Herald says

the revenues of 1866 amount

ed to $660,000,000, ana adopts that a8 the basis oi calculation tor future receipts.— Ttn. rovunuo proper amounted to nearly $70,000,uOO less than the amount stated, by tho Herald.

So we have little to look to hereafter for public revenue, save tba recoipts from custom duties and in ternal revenue. But no Buch sum as $470,000,000 will be realized from taxa-

Ihc JtcccutricUies of Cupid—A Marriage after Three Minutes' Oourtslilp—The Quickest time oil itecord —Chicago Ahead ot the World. [From the Chicago .Republican, fept, 13.]

Many aro the stories that have been told of rapid courtships, whereby two hearts have been brought to a realization of love in but a lew hours' time improbable tales, too, have been related of queer matclKB constituted by that eccentric little god Cupid, and were it not that truth strarfger than fiction, the most' credulous could scarcely believe them. Chicago boasts now of the "best time on record" in the matrimonii!lTne, the foundation for which is astrunge and almost inconceivably short courtship and marriage. Tbe.'e uro, though, romances in real life more astonishing than the pen of the novelist ha^'cv&r, depicted. The end of romances in general ia marriage, which is said to be ilitt beginning of true happiness in life, but idealism does not always end when married lifo begins, as |s exemplified in this story.

There eume over from Germany, severul months ago, a young girl, like Jephtliu's daughter, "passing lair," accompa nied by a man named Frederick Hermann. The iupecuniosity of the latter oaused tho puract oi the lassie to suffer somewhat, as sbe paid|his fare. He waj to marry her, but tailed to do so, and on August 26th, she instituted buit uguinat him for the recovery of the money, The caso came beforo Justice Sclicsnwald, but there was a tad termination to it. Hermann dropped down dead in the Auloon below the office of thp. Justice, No. 145 Randolph street, just as ho was about to be arraigned for final examination. The Coroner's jury rendered a verdict that ho had died from mental excitement, ^ow, tho mention of in the daily precis ^attracted tho uttention of a lono widower in Aurora, Illinois, who saw an opportunity to once more eiijoy ihe bliss of wedded life. Mary FtDiser, the German laSsio alluded to, becauiO the btar ol his fancy. Ho would win her though tbe.lfeavens fall. Bereft of worldly aid, as he thought she was, he could secure her yrith little trouble.

Chicago was overflowing with sight« seers from the fair village of Aurora, on Wednesday last, iSTid among the number waB Mr. Charles Dietrich, independent farmer, &c., tho matrimonially inclined porsohage in question. He cared not ior the tail tpirei, tho oriental structures of marble, nor tor the thousand attractions of the city ho was led on to bis unseen

by an impulse of his heart, and

he could go in poiotber direction Justice Shonewald waa visiied by him yesterday, and to his hurried questions about tho lit--tlo German girl lor whom he was searching, tho stern man of the law could return only a crustling answer, and that was that Mary Fcesser was married. Necessity is the mother of invention, and 5fr. Dietrich resolved not to be balked by the advent of so trivial an adversity, so bo eagerly inquired us to tbj chances left for obtaining wife. The Justice kindly aided him in his stracgo purpose, aud went below into the salopn, wher« had a brief conversation ftith a Cornell girl therein employed as servant. Ho stated to her the affair, and she acquiesced. Tho man and the willing lass met in the office ot the Justice up stairs, a few moments later, and, at'l6r a courtship of but three or four minutes Wro married.

The name of tho young lady is now Mrs, Dietrich,

net

Hilda Neecing. But

the story has not reached a finale. The bridegroom.is about forty-five years of age, rather prepossessing, and is well-to-do in this world's goods. Many years ago he married his first wife, who went the way of all flesh. His second was given to the flowing bowl so excessively, and to castigating her husband so fearfully, that the latter obtiined a divorce. The tweo mado widower is now in his glory, having, as he says," ah affectionate better half, a counterpart of his first love of long ago. The happy couple speot the nigat at a hotel, and will, to-day, leave for the blooming town'of 'Aurora.-

What novel can equal such a romance in real life? Great improbabilities beeoipe.Stiots, which, when known, causing a passing wonder, and are soon treated as natural occurrences, while the writer of fiction is obliged to work up an improbable situation with the most plausible touches of Art to give his pen-pioture the air of truth This wonderful tale of marriage on the wing is vouched for, and is perfectly true.
