OUB CHICAGO LETTER.

CHICAGO, Sept. LFY 1867.W

BAILWXT 1TEM9.

The new station of the Michigan -Southern and Bock Island roads jointly built and owned, grand as it is, is it to be out done by the grander structure about to

up for the Pittsburg and Northwestern roads. Nine of our trunk lines •will ih«n bo accommodated in three ercellenis stations, located at convenient

points. The Great Eastern, now a monthly tenant of the Northwestern, nil doubtless be turned out into the col*., and the St. Louis will have to make i-me with the uew partners or build for itself. I do not see what should prevent the St. Louis from going with the Northwestern and the Pittsburg in building and owning the now structure.

There are no rival interests to hinder On the contrary, the combination would bo advantageous to all parties, and might ba rendered formidably strong,

It is possible some such condition ia already arranged, but if so, it has not been announced.

The attention of the managers of all the through Eastern routes is at length turned to the value of through cars.

This changing from coach to tfoach twice or thrice in twenty-four hours, merely because the ownership of the reate

is cut into sections, may

be endured now

and then, but becomes a bore to men who go East and rot«rn half a dozen time* a year. The Pittsburg line (Allentown to Now York) has htnorabiy led the way, and new runs vory comfortable coaches from Chicago to Jersey City without any change. Moreover, a passenger may secure any amount of room he may desire to pay lor at a moderate cost, and settle himself in a state room, or a full section, inSnniylSr aighf. Way passengers cannot intrude through passengers are as definitely allotted as him eel!, and no one frowns if he occupiesItwo entire pews from morning till night. -:The ventilation of these coaches i3 almo-t par foct so good at any rate as to exclude the sooty odor which is the only disagreeable feaiuroof this really excellent route.

Tbo Michigan Central does a very enterprising and praisworthy thing in running|!uxui iant coaches as far as Rochester without change. At present it i| not found practical to

could but push on, crossing the Albany bridge ana running on Mr. Yanderbilt's track quite down to 21st street, it would be aright good thing. The difficulty lies among the sleeping car men, one faction of whum, running coaches worthy of the dark «gts, have a long contract with the Hudson Eiver and New York Central Companies, andaiand upon the letter ol tho bond. But western enterprise'will outwit them yet. •*!:'_

The Michigan Southern, which under the admirable management of President Philips, has taken rank with the very b:si lines in the country, is as yet only ublo to run through coaches to Clevaland.. Auiiva negotiations are in progress however fur tho complete consolidation of the" lines bctweon Toledo and Buffalo, in the immediate interest of the New York Central against ibe Erie. If those shall suA coed, cars will soon ba run from YftP Bureu street to 31st street without oh&nge, pawing Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo and Albany as only so many way stationsMr. Philips hus just finished, at tho company's shops in Adrian, two really pula» ticl couches, the ^"Forest City," and the "Garden City," which will run nightly between Cleveland and Chicago, and if tbo new p'rogruinme is arranged will probably by the first to run quite into New York. lu attention to generous provision for tho comfort of passengors en route,

western

managers, although relatively poorer, are iinlnueiy in udvanca of eastern managers. The first sleeping car ever attached toa train tvus built for a line running westward from this city, and trundled out of a Chicago .station on its first trip. Such curs are regularly run by the North wes-tts-i by the St. Louis, the Burlington", the Michigan Southern, the MichiganjCenirai and tbo Pittsburgh are simply unkr.i iu tho East, unless- we exccpt a fipc-ciai coach running between Newport and Boston. Think of the abominations contrived by the Central Trarsportation Company for the through lino octweeu Washington and New York I Rcail! the middle passage on a swing shelf between New York and Boston!

Returning thence find the "Garden City" in waiting at Cleveland to take you to the "back settlements" of the uncivilized West! From New York, if you come by Albany and Buffalo, you are bestowed in a car that cost $50,000. From Buffalo you ride in one that cost $12,000. The ''Garden City" cost $21,000. When you leave that, intent to reach Omaha and the Rocky Mountains, you ore put in one that cost $40,000. What the figures will be across the Plains remains to be seen.

Two Thousand Spectators— Intense Excitement!

LARGE KEPRESKKTATION OF THE PRESS liO \l THE CHIEF CITIES OF THE WJflOJX

Splendid Ovation to Snap— the JDog- Champion of

America I

For some two'or three months past, our quiet little city has been on the qui vive with rumors ot the approaching "set to" between the famous mastiffs, whose names Appear in the heading of this article.— Tbwser is a resident of this city, where, it is believed, his ancestors lived at a very tariy tfay. Every boy in town is famiiiar with bia recorcHj He, when quite a pup, exhibited unmistakable fighting qualities. His. first ''set-to" was with a sedate old house-dog, pursuing his way quietly down the street, who, when attacked, unceremoniously seizing Towser by the neck, flung him into* hors» poiid, aud leisurely trotted on. After this, Towser was never known to venture upon a dog over his own size. Highlighting propensities, however, were carefully fostered by a number of promi. singboys In town, and in the course of time his Tuuacular development was so enormous that his friends predicted for him a bright future. Under the skillful discipline of bis accomplished trainers R. Onder and C. U. R. Tail, Etq., hie fighting weight had, from 110, been reduced to 73£ pounds. On the night preceding the combat, Towser is reported by his seconds to have siept remarkably well— howling but twice before nfidnight, (supposed to have been occasion .i by an over? looked flea), and in the morning for breakfast, he eagerly devoured two spring chickens and lickel his chops for more.— It ft thought that at the same lime, be -also made a motion as if he would like to wag his tail, but to prevent foul play on the part of his Opponent, in the approachiog "mill," that CAudal appendage had been very much abbreviated, hence the raotioa, if any, was slight.

Snap was a T. mastiff, from the moral and enterprising village of Morrisseana, where ha had become celebrated as the quickest and hardest biter of any dog thoreabouts. His backers elaim for him a lin'iSil descent from the famous Rrtbb. Great credit is duo his trainers, R. Ough and B.L. K. Leg, Esq., for bringing out finely all his oest points. Unfortunately his rest on the preceding night was a good deal disturbed by night-mare, superinduced by a too hearty supper on raw mutton, wh'u-h Soap, having been for along while on short allowance, had purloined. Nevertheless, on the eventful morning of the struggle, save some increased watery redness of the eyes, he appeared to be in splendid condition. His fighting weight was sixty-four pounds.

For two or three weeks past the approaching'^ ill" between these famous champions of the prize ring had been the theme of universal talk, and no small amount of betting. The fancy men throughout the country bad evidently determined to make this the most attractive affair of tho kind ever witnessed. in the villuge of Dog-town, a number of prominent citizens, headed by B. Ruiser Esq, got up quite a sensation by giving Towser apublic benefit in the New School House, wich the Trustees kindly offered for an entertainraeut, which it was thought would hare a beneficial effect apon the young, tiome of the beat talent astacbed to a traveling theatrical troop was employed, and a. number of the celebrated Minstrel corps, under the leadership of H. U. M. Bug, Esq, rendered some of their funniest and most instructive things. When, at the conclusion of the inspiring scene, Tomer, led by his trainers, appeared, holding his flag of red and blue in his mouth, the entertainment reached its culmination. The whole affair was in good taste, and reflects great credit upon our village.

At a very early hoiir on the day of the fight, an immense and mongrel crowd filled the depot. Among them to be seen wero some disreputable characters—but theMttrt *lso hot a few of our most respectable citizens. We feel confident that

we were not mistaken in detecting, spite of their disguises the fie v. Mr. Fart and. Deacon Sly of the same church, standing on each side of B. Ill&rdj Esq., The tp"' commodating B. B. Managers had gpaerously put on two extra trains of V* out, each at reduced Care—and br 8} -A.. M., the eager and aomewhjp* noisy crowd disembarked a few nfle« beyond the Hamilton Station *t a beautiful dog-wood grove, on the frfm of B. L. Oat, Esq., A number of gentlemanly and accommodating Policemen accompanied the expidition—rendering valuable aid in holding th« stakes of heavy betters— in extending the ropes for the outer and inner nngt and in securing between them convenient places for the large number of able reporters from nearly all parts of,the Union. Indeed, so large and respectable was this reportorial corps, that a testy gentleman from Pittsburg, D. O. G. Fancier, Esq^ remarked in our hearing, that he "should never have dreamed there were half as many papers in all the land!"

By acclamation long and loud, B. L. Uster, of St. Louis, was chosen referee of the fight, and at once sprang into the arena, and waving his hat, declared ia hifl usually bland and modest manner, that, having been unanimoufly selected to fill that responsible position, "he intended to see to it that the best dog whipped!"

Shouts of applause greeted this characteristic speech. Suddenly to the right the crowd swayed and yelled, as Towser, led by his seconds and holding his flag in his mouth, bounded into the ring.

Scarcely had the cries of applause with which the citizens of Dogtown greeted their champion subsided, when to the left a still more exultant outcry, if possible, arose from the denizens of Morriseana at the appearance of their tavorite Snap.— This yellow shoi t-eared dog entered the ring quietly and appeared a little excited, il' not suspicious. Doubtless tho responsi' bility resting on him .as the chosen chani' pion in so great a contest, the immense and boisterous crowd, and, possibly, the formidable appearance of Towser, would naturally excite the noble beast. G.Am* bier, Esq., by request, read over the Con stitution of the Association for promoting the dog by art of self-defence, together with the By-laws regulating these combats—among which it appeared that it mnst be a fair stand up fight, neither dog was to worry the other after he was down there was to be no biting nor scratching below the belt any snapping at legs or tail hold would be pronounced foul and forfeit the prize. A wag at our left here remarked, "So far as Snap was concerned) that last caution was superfluous, inasmuch as his antagonist was already curtailed."

The combatants wore then brought to the middle of the ring and introduced t« one another. Each eyed his foe sharply^ Towser growling and Snap showing his teeth. At this stage of affairs the former usually composed and confident, became suddenly uneasy and nervous and on inquiring, the cause was found to arise from the discolored appearance of Snap's teeth. Foul play was feared to remove which, B. L. E. Leg, Esq., Snap's trainer, throat out bis left calf, Into which the noble mastiff) indignant at the imputation, sunkhis incisors. After waiting a due length of time, and no other bad effect resulting than a slight feeling of nausea on the part of the dog, Towser professed himself entirely satisfied, and at once they were led to the scratch. The seconds retired from the ring and the two athletes faced each other. Neither, however, seemed anxious to inaugurate hostilities they simply eyed one another, growled nt.d showed their teeth. "Shake him, Towser I" bite him, Snap I" were the encouraging cries from the friends of each combatant. Still no aggressive movement. The scene was Decoming monotonous, Hisses arose on every side, and there were signs of a row. When a diversion occurred which afforded a little amusement and precipitated the fightAs the crowd on disembarking from the train, rushed pell-mell to the theater of the combat, a young and enterprising gentleman from Baltimore, F. L. Uckey Esq., eagerly seized upon the opportunity of obtaining an unobstructed view afforded by a friendly sappling, nimbly climbei it. Alas, for poor human aspirations 1 Somo busy woodpecker, all unconscious of the peril he was preparing, had honeycombed the limb, to the extremity of which, and immediately over the combatants, our young friend had made his way. Suddenly, as the crowd was trying to hiss spunk into the hesitating warriors, the treacherous branch succumbed, and the astounded F. L. (Jokey, Esq., amid tremendous cheering, landed on tbe stump of Towser'a tail, who, surprised, in turn sprang forward. Snap regarding it as an offensive movement, pluckily rose to meet him, and before the modest youth could make big rapid exit from tbe arena, the grund set-to had begun in earnest. Nev* or was a contest watched with a keener interest. Both champions were picked dogs, thoroughly trained, and a very considerable amount of money was at stake on tha issue.

Never, probably, did the splendid sci« ence of self-defence appear more admirable than on the present occassion. Towser evidently had the advantage in weight and brute strength, but Snap was wiry, active, scientific, and a very bard and quick biter. When his teetb came together tbe sound thereof was like unto the clash of a steel wolf trap when sprang. Backwards and forwards across the ring did they push one another. *-I'U go you 500 on Towser I" cried old Squire B.L. Oat. "I'm your man!" responded G. Ambler, Esq., For eight and a half minutes did this sublime contest rage. On neither bauner did victory teeth

to peroh. Now this, now that one gained advantage* All at once a quick short yelp announced that damage had been received. In one of his tremendous surges Snap had bitten off one-half of Towser's right ear. The honorable referee cheerfully granted the claim set up for first blood for Snap. The wound, slight though it was, exttperataT thv robfo mastiff and he made an onset so furicoi* that his antagonist was overthrown and Towser fell upon him with his whole weight. First fall down for him was at onCe claimed and granted. By tlte well known rules of the ring,With which eviiy fighting dog is supposed to be familiar,

the-rirst^fcnd here to cease. But ToKprf's blood was op aad he began to yp#*Ty his foe. As the cry, "foal I foul 1" arose tr^ni .th^-crowds Snap, always on the alert, managed to get his antagonist's foot ibTMs aieath, whereupon Towser's pluck suddenly left him and he set np a piteons howl.

The referee decidedthat both dogsnail violated tiie rales of the ring—but the "fouls" were so nearly simultaneous, we shoald call it a fie and let the mill go on.' His decision on this delicate question was received with the most deafening ap. plause. Immediately each champion was borne back to corner and sponged off by his second and soup holder, and when time was again called they were both at the scratch and eager for the fray. The second round was, for awhile, only a repetition of the first in every important particular—save that the growling was heavier and the bitingmorepromiscuous. At the close of the 7th minute a lunge quick as lightning on the part of the yellow dog( slit Towser's nose to the bone, which so enraged that amiable mastiff that he determined to crush him. Snap saw the coming storm, and scientifically dodged to avoid the blow. Whereupon Towser altogether blinded by his fury and ignoring all science and rules, seized bis enemy by the tail, and in that undignified posture they twice made the circuit of the ring.—

The referee promptly decided Snap to be victor by afoul on tbe part of his oppo aent. Thus suddenly ended this highly entertaining combat after a severe struggle of 15} minutes. Neither of the noble beasts had suffered much. Towser's ear ear was bitten off—his foot lamed and hig nose slit—while one of Snap's eyes was nearly closed, and his caudal appendage so badly mutilated that the attending surgeon decided amputation to be necessary.

By 11 o'clock the expedition had returned to the city with no special disturbs ance, eave some angry disputation over a bet between B. Ough and £. Illiard, Esq., which ended in the latter gentleman being knocked down, with the loss of three of hif front teeth.

The next day plaeard# were pasted over all the city, and notices appeared in tbe mfrning papers to the effect that the accomplished manager of" the Metropolitan Iheater was happy in announcing to all t^e lovers of the drama that In addition tb the usual attraction of tlie evening, be lad been so fortunate as to secure the attendance of SX4P, the dog-champion of /America, who, assisted by some distinguished volunteer talent, including his late opponent, would give some illustrations of the noble and dogly art of self defense. F. S. The public are assured that the entertainment will be of the most chaste and refined order. ',

On the following evening that poputar place of resort for our young people was packed almost to suffocation, and at tbe conclusion of the usual performance, to« gether with a brief and chaste Black Crook exhibition, and a capital clog dance by young Nimble, the late champions of the ring—Snap and Towser—appeared, amid deafening cheers, waving of handkerchief^ and a perfect shower of boquets. Towser, sadly limping, advanced and remarked that in consequence of the swoU len condition of his foot, he must beg to be exoused from any ^.special effort that evening, but that the audience might sot be disappointed in their anticipated pleas* ure, he had secured the services of his neighbor Bose, who appeared on the stage amid friendly platidits. After putting on their muzzles the two gladiators entertained the crowd for quite a time, though, of courn, the set to was rather a one sided affair. Tt

This narrative will be complete when we add that on the return of Snap to his N. T. home, an immense concourse turned out to greet him with music and flags, and a speech from L. Beer, Esq. The chamo pion's march to his old kennel in Guzzle street was a perfect ovation. The noisy crowd were clamorous for a speech, but the noble mastiff, modest as he was brave, crept into his hole and dismissed the crowd to drink at his expense.
