Tuell, Ripley & Co., have a new

ndvortisoment this morning tq announce tho fact that thoy are receiving every day elogant line3 of goods adapted to the fall trade, and oarnestly solicit an examination by all consumers of dry goods.

Wo learn from the Evansville

Journal that tho suit against A. T.-Whit-tlesey, Esq., tho Postmaster of that, city for violation of tho postal laws, has been dismissed by tho United States District Attorney.

COLLISION.—One of the street cars collided wiih a buck buard yesterday, demolishing the latter vehicle. Tho driver of tho car switched his horses to one side and saved tbom from injury.

Wo understand challenge went

over yesterday from the llesoluto Base Ball Club, of Evansville to tho Western Club, of Indianapolis, to play a game for the championship of the State.

Tho new steam fire engine, now

building for this city, will be delivered hero r.oxt month, and we understand will probably be located at the engine house of the Niagara Fire Company on Ninth Street. It will be tho same size and pattern of tho Steamer '•Albert Lango."

Last Sunday four brothers named

Reidenower, in Posey county, attempted to extract the load from a shell lying for some time about tho house The shell axploded, killing one, blowing a leg from one, an arm from another, and fearfully mangling the fourth. It is supposed all will die.

bsff* The first annual Dull of the Hibornia Benevolent Society will be hold at Dowling Hall to-night. The names of the gentlemen composing the several committees having in charge the affair is sufficent guarantee of a pleasant occasion.— Prof. Tout's Band will furnish the music.

NOTES PROM THE POLICE COURT.— Patrick Donley, for a drunk and disorderly, was assessed $8 50 Jerry Grady, for same offense, $7,50 Thomas Roberts was simply drunk, and got off wifi $6,00, while Allen Cloak, who was disorderly and not drunk, paid $8,00. At the time we visited the court there were two individuals "in soak" at the calaboose, sweating benzine and rot-gut whisky at every pore. An examination awaited them so soon as enough oozed out to allow them"tc answer to the question of ''guilty, or not guilty."

A NEW HAIL.—Among the valuable improvements now going forward on Main street we are apt to overlook the many fine buildings, residences and store-rooms on other streets. Among the latter is the splendid block that looms up on the southwest corner of the Public Square, erected by Dr. Allen Pence, and in which has been located a magnificent and spacious public balL Tkis has just received the finishing touches, and is now open for pub« lie use.

The corner room of the ground floor of this block is used by the Doctor as a salesroom of his drug house and is filled with a fine stock of drugs, chemiculs, medicines, oils, &i., arranged in admirable order. To the west of tho drug store is a large store room, which will soon be for rent. Between the two is a spacious en. trance, with abroad flight of stairs, loading to offices in the second story and the Hal' ^n the third story. On the second floor are large and woll-arrangad dressingroom?, and a supper room. Leading from these rooms is a hall and flight of stairs for a roar entrance to the hall above, to be used for parties, &e.

The Hall is forty-six by soventy-five feet and is provided with moveable seats fjr six hundred people. A very lofty ceiling and windows on all sides afford good ventilation in the warmest weather. At the south end is

a

large rostrum, ex

tending nearly across the Hall. giving amplo room for music, speaking, &c. The wood wor's of the Hall and lower rooms is grained, and the whole interior finished fine style.

We learn a number of engagements have already been made for tho Hall for various purposes, and it will, without doubt, beeomo a popular place ,of resort this winter, especially for parties, balls, festivals and srmilnr entertainments. Dr. Pence deserves credit for the erection of such a structure, and we hope it m'ay prove remunerative to him in the greatest degree.

MAUKIKD. -lti this city, on the 17th insfc, by Ee\'. 8. M. gtimson, Mr. EDWARD WRIGHT to Miss MART BROA DHURST1, tli of Terra Haute.

THE plan of the Washington Library Company of Philadelphia, for the endow-, ment of the Riverside Institute forSolr diers' and Sailors' Orphans, is one that has been laid out in strict accordance with the terms of the charter as granted for this purpose by iho Legislature of Pennsyl, vania. This charter of the Washington Library Company legalizes the very acts that its members are now performing for this noblo object. The plan as most of our renders are aware, consists in selling stock at one dollar per share, each share or shares being accompanied by a handsome fine steol-plate engraving, worth fifty per cent, more than is actually paid for the stock. Besides this, every share of stock secures one present in the great distribution of presents to shareholders. Of these presents the aggregate value is $300,000, one of them being worth the enormous sum of $40,000, another $20,000, another $10,000 and one worth $5,000, and two worth $2,500 each, several worth $1,000 each, and so on. This is simply the plan in brief as adopted and presented to the public. Every shareholder will obtain some present in the great distribution, besides the beautiful engraving at tbe time of purchase, and each one has an equal chance of getting a small fortune, dwlt
