Sal^har Well in CrawforiCountyTbe New Albany Cbmmsrcisl pabiithǤ tho following in relation to tbe sulpbur well at Eat^o, Crawford county

We visited a few days ago tbe remarkable artesian well, called tbe Eaton Sulphur Well, in Crawford county, Indiana. It, is situated on a little stream emptying into Litfle Blue Biver, about eight miles west of Leavenworth and the same distance north of Alton. The road from Leaven* worth we found anything but smooth, vet they told us tbatfit was quite as good as that from Alton That portion of Crawford county is certainly as wild and desolate as could weil be imagined. There is a constant series of hills and hollows, over which the wagons jolt] along at a frantic rate. The eight miles seemed to grow to double the number before we'.eachcd our desti nation.

Tbe well is ia a littia valley, surrounded by bills, with a stream of water purling through the trees a few yards distant. The sulphurous odor cat) be detected at tbe4 tisttnee of a quarter of a mile. The dried branches shrubs, stones, etc., over whicb tbe water passes are encrusted with sulphur as white as snow. Tbe well bits a wooden tube, six feel high, from which the water is "carried off by a epout the diameter of the tube is nearly eight inches. Tbe water whicb pours out at this large open' ing is thrown up with great (orce and Would bj sufficient to turn an ordinary mill. It is perfectly-clear and delightfully cold. VViien poured into a gia*s it spark' les iiku champagne. To such as have been aecustomed to iu use, it is said to be very pleasaut, but for amm experiment we are not very willing to have a repetition it. This well, liko a number of others in other suctions, was bored for oil. The work was done by tbe Stanfield company in expectation of making this part of Crawford as noted ae the far famed oil re giuns of Pennsylvania. It is .needless to say that not one of the d:i ns of oil wells which wero bored in tbis region ever produced petroleum in anything like paying quantities. Tbo ouly wells besides this one at all likely tu be profitable to their own ers are two firm salt wells near Grantsburg in Craw lord county. Tbnse wells are rich in salt and one of the we?ls has already yiu^ded ten or fifteen barrels per day. The proprietors thinks that Ooth weHs will furnish thirty or forty barrels as soon as tbey can be pi jperlv worked

Tbe Eaton well is 273 feet deep, and, as before stated, the water is thrown up about *ix feet by using smaller tubes it baa been forced up thirty-seven feet, and it bas been estimated tb.it it can be raised two bun dred feet. Tbe flow of water li constant, the volume of wuter not being changed in any appreciable degree by either droutr. or heavy rains. When tbo oil inun camo to ihe streuu), the pressure of water was so great that they were obliged to suspend operations for a time. Tbo work was af lerward resumed, and by dint of much lu Dor they succeeded in going twenty .five feet farther, but tbe flow was so great that it was finally abandoned.

At the time uf our visit we found a little two story log house with two frames at' lathed, ouc lor a kitchen, th» other Ur a little store, kept by the lesses. About for ty putienta wero staying in tbis house and a little cattle shod. They boarded lbem» selves and brought their o*wn baddbg. We conversed wail a young man by ttie name of liicburd«, wbo bad been at tbe wuli about a month, lie had been troubled with some pulmonary disease. His cough had entirely lef' him, and he was lin.thought, a great deal stronger. He too'.i a cold douche every morning, allowing the wholo stream to be thrown upon him through a hole In the side of the tube. He said lhat ho usually drank about tw|ntyfive glasses pur day. However this may bo, it is fuat earning a reputation, and will ere long, we have no doubt, be quite a resort for invalids.

About lb* middle of August tbree gontlemvn, Ale^rs, Moure, Harvey and Lusher, leased lho well and adjacent grounds for term of years, wiiu tbo privilege of ten mere-if desired. At present it is simply enclosed by a small bouse, but tbe gentlemanly proprietor, Mr. Moore, infortjuoi us tbftt ha was receiving ihi: lumber for erecting buildings ibis full lor the accommodations of visitors next season. He contemplates building two row*f cotuges, on* hundred and fifty feet each a large bath houseffcllh suitable compartments, twelve in number, and a hotel, seventy five feet loDg,are to be buill, and ready for service next season.
