TUE olliciul account of the action be tvvcen tiio United duties lorces and the savuges on tlie Lsianci of Formosa, sbowe the extreme imprudence of risking an engagement on a tropical soil. On landing, tbe enemy at once lied, and the march in pursuit was blow, circuitous and toilsome. 1'rogrees was iuipedeu by a jungle composed of a thick undergrowth of prickly plants and low barren trees. Tho rooks and ravine3 afforded shelter to the savages, and gave no chance of forcing a hand-to-hand encounter. It is truo a fijw huts were burned down, but with this unimportant achievement the expedition terminated. The valuable life of Lieut A, S. MACKENZIE was lost, and fourteen othor persons wore dangerously affected by tbe powerful rays of the sun. Whether a wholesome terror was created in the minds ot the natives may bo doubted.— The exgeditiou may be considered as a decided fuiluro. The settlement of tbe south end of Formosa by tbe Chinese authoritics oi a military post, and the pursuit of the barbarians in the winter, seems to bo tho only uiCthod of putting atop ihc is it c* uifiio-wS .ir0B o.i':'.ors.
TINS National Bankiug Uw,-wUicU e3 all issuos of State banks paid* dut national banks to the value of ten per cent, on said issues, was meant not only to prohibit these issues of Stalo banks, but any other notes used as money, no mutter by what authority used. This principles has lately been put in force against the banks of New Orleans, whicb have been doing something in tho nature of ovasion, by receiving deposits of notes issued by the city ot New Orleans and State of Louisiana. The banks pleaded that they had received such notes iis special deposits, and paid them back, to the depositors. In other words, the, understanding was that upon those '([eposits. national bank notes wero not to ba psvid but only notes of the character of the currency deposited. By allowing thia scheme to be carried out tho law would be evaded, and different sorts of currency be maiutnined in circulation. Slate bank notes might bo legalized by a similar contrivance, and tbe object of tho law would Oo impeded. Tho Commissioner or Inletnal Revenue lias decided that tbe national banks cannot by any device get round tbe provisions of tbe law, and that they must pay tbo tax. The matter is one which may apply to her places th&h JNUW Orleans. The principiu established is, itiul no agreement between uatlona: banks.and depofii.ora Can change the obligations ot' tin*'former under ihe law, ana thai currency, no matter by what Authority issued, other than the national hank nous, is liable to the tax. Tbe decision is also importaut, becausa it will h»ye ?he eff.-ct of tecuring a uuil'orm currency throughout the United SiaU-8.
Thk "'bad old uma," Jubal A j£arly^ has written and published a puper-cover-, ed octavo volume of ono hundred and tliirl\-tivo pages, contaioing a memoir of his upeiations in 1861 and 1865. A few copies, for private and gratuitous distrl' button, wero published last year in Toronto but Jubai, finding tliat he has not been called to account for his treason, like many a non-reconstructed Iicbel, is now disposed to glory ir. his misdeeds, and has •brought out a new edition in Lynchburg, Virginia With unrepentant zeal, ho claims to havo fought for Liberty Right and Justice, and boasts of having ordored Chamborsbnrg to bo self on firo. This was to be dono in retalia* tion, McCausland' was ordered to demand one hundred thousand dollars .in goM, and in default of payment the town was to be burned. To ordinary minds the proceeding would seem to be inspired by a love of plunder, by a desire to handle ihe hard cash. An act of war which requires so severe a retaliation as the burning of a defenseless town can not bo Atoned for in money. Mystery of the "fireat Pyramid. For several thousand years the ob ject for which the Great Pyramid" was constructed was a mystery to the whole world, and many of tbe mot learned vans bavd exhausted Burmise and specu 'ation in their faultless efforts to solve the riddle. A few years ago, gentleman in.. XondpiU ft itr. Thomas Taylor, con ofifveij^tho uleu that the structure was in opired by Divitie Providence to afford tbo Egyptians a standard for their weights apd measures. This theory found but few proselytes among scientific men in Europe, but fanciful and far fetched-tas it isrit has recently found an advocate on this side of the water, in tbe person of Ptofessor Eaton, of New York who read an elaborate essay on the sub ject tbe otber day before University Convocation, at Albany. In support of this view ho said that the pyramid was perfectly symetrical, with five sides and five angles. It was originally 762 feet on each sife, and is how the highest and largest building erected by man'.' Sir Isaac Newton bad devoted his time and labor in analyzing the ancient cubit, and came to the conclusion that it was 25 inches, and a little more. The circle wbich forms tho correlative to the pyra mid, oonsists of 365£ of these cubits, thus cornspjnding to the year. The pyramid was made plain to tho meridian, without hicOglypbics or secret inscriptions, as all burial places of antiquity did have whieli hft'Tojirit evorywhero else. The \vl!ich i5 found in tbo center of the boly liao, beeps ^.ynioionjy supposed to be a iarcopfia^iisV there is no appe anro to bear this theory out No proces sion of prits'.s could enter, and it is. in deed difficult for any one. Tho granite of which a portion of the pyramid is made iis notfouod near at hand, and indeed not closer than Mount Sinai. The structure seems to be built on the most correct principles of geometry, it coincides in pointing with the North Star, or that star which, in the procession of the equinoxes, 'four thousand years ago was the North Stor. Prof. Eaton then proceeded to show that the temperature of the central yoom was uniform throughout, thus affor ding a place for keeping weights and Imeasure^ that tbe box affords an exact liquid measure that water was found in ihe pyramid itself, thus giving pure material for careful examination that the Opening in the pyramid looked out on the lower culmination of the North Star at {the time of its erection, and not OD tbe Ripper, because the pleiades would interfere with iis view aud that it is on the exact spot for the purp se of taking astro poiuiual observations.
Thus far we have followed tbo Profes. por's remarks, but it is due to truth that vve should shay the whole matter looks marvellously litre one of the many selfdelutions whicb scientific mon. from time 'time, in all ages have shown themselves quite apt to tail into, when they get {induiy euauutred oi a pet subject. A Young Pittsburg Widow Fleece* CleYelander. The reporter of the Clevland Herald, has a young friend who came to Pittsburg recently, and was victimized by agusbine young widow at a hotel here to ^he tune of $430. The reporter tells the stoiy thus: It seems that he went to Pitsburg on a visit, and wbile there at the hot^l he made the aquaintance of a pretty young widow who had just escaped the "weeds" tbe first day of bis acquaintance, and appeared at the dinner table arr&jed in an elegant light silk, and, as he states, l»nit»d charming, all smiles and eenialitf. Inis table acquaintance ripened into a p*i .or 60fa tei^-a-tete, and long lingerin Wrtlks in tbe evening, stopping now an then to ''cream and soda," and intimacy tbai could not be misunderstood by the landlady of the hotel So finding tbat ti eir actions were watched, she entreated him leave her, but that was just the "game" to make him stay by her side as oi-i, much to tho displeasure of the Undlaiy, who took no pains 'o hide this ill feeling from the parties. In order to escape these persecutions, as she termed the actions of the landlady, she proposed a trip to Cincinnati and Louisville, and oar triend having but httle to occupy his time, ccn-enud ufld away they went at fast as express trains could carry tbemi. They remained io these cities for a few weeks and growing tired of the sameness of city life, (there were no first-class amusements to be attained) concluded to try a few weeks on the lake shore, in theForest City. They arrived on the morning express, and took lodging at a firstclass boarding house up town. Durinj bis acquaintance our young friend hai trusted considerable sums of money to the charming widow for safe keeping, he be ing nervous about pocket picking and burglary, and when they arrived here she had about $430 in her possession which belonged to him. The day previous to his tolling us his loss, business called him to Oberlin, Ohio, where he was obliged to remain one night.
Upon his returning to this city in the morning, his first thought was for the widow of the pleasure it'would give him to meet her again after an absence of twenty hours and he provided a very fine boquett for tho occasion, to convince tbe-dear creaturc that with him, at least, it was not "out of sight, out of mind." Tbe swiftest horses were employed to con vey him from the depot to the house containing his adored. Arriving at the steps, he rushed—school-boy fashion—up the Steps, through the hall, up another flight of stairs ana in her room, to find her— gone, and his $4S0 with her. He met tho landlady on the stairs as ho came down, who. in answer to his inquiries, said that the lady bed packed her trunks and left the house about an hour after him, on the day before, and that she said tbat she was oing into the country to rusticate until er husband returned. Our friend paid tbo bills and left tho house, a wiser, if not a richer man. As he is one of Fortune's favorites, tbo loss of tbe money don't trouble him but as ho expresses it, "that he should be bamboozled by a dashing widow."

The rapid progress of the Union Pacific BailroaJ, sow building weet from Omaha, Sebraska, aad iocmiag, with its weatara coanections, as unbroken line across the continent, attract* attention to the value of the First Mortgage Bonds which the Company now offer to tbe public. The first question naked by prudent investors is, "Are those bonds secure 1" Next, "Are they a profitable investment f" To reply In btief: 1st. TLe early completion «T the whole great liae to tha Pacific is as certain as any future badness event can be. Tbe Government grant of over twenty million acr of land and fifty million dollars in its own bonds practically guarantees it. Ode fourth of the work is already done, and the u»cx continues to be laid at tbe rata of two mQsa a day. 2d. Ihe Union Pacidc Railroad beitdj ar* issued upon what promises to be cue of the molt profitable lines of railroad ia the country. For many years it most be the only line conuectiog the Atlantic ana Pacific and being without competition, it can maintain remunerative rates. 3d. 125miles of this road a fioliied ahd folly equipped with d3pots, locomotives, cars, xc., and srp trains ar) daily running each Way. Although it is not claimed that there can bo any tetter securities than Governments, tber* are parties who consider a first mortgage upon such a property as this the very best security in the world, and who sell their Government* to reinvest in these bauds—thus soourlhg a «rrater inU-ret. 9th. As the Uniou Pacific Bailraad bonds are offered for the present at 80 cent* oa the dollar and aocrued Intel est, they are the cheapest in the market, being more than 10 per cent, less than U. S.
