Tlie Governorship.
0 jr exchange? are talking about the probable candidate fqf the gubernatorial cbair, and now and thon appears a letter in the Journal at Indianapolis, which attempts to head the people off from making their own choice by insisting that Gover» nor Baker has claims upon the people, and that his-claiort' must be respected. This ia the.merest folly. We do not .believe that Governor Baker is the choice of th^jpeople of this State, nor any lar^e portion of them. At Indianapolis, where hjis patronage is a power, he is popular with some, but in this part of the State the people talk of other men, and mean to do What they can to have them nominated, and we know wliat we aay when wa affirm that there are men in the Republican party who can carry a much larger vote in tbia part of the State th»n Govofbor Baker. Our people want Will Cum back to make the race. They have watched his course, and would delight to do him honor. If he iB nominated, his name alone will be a tower of strength up bore. "We have no word to say against Governor Baker as a man, but he is not the choice ot all the people, and those who choose another will not bo stifled by the cry that ho has claims upon the party. Tho party has claims upon its members, and if a majority favor Governor Baser upon a fair canvass, we will supjjort him, but wo prefer another, and will sajTSo fit all propor limes.— Valparaiso Videite
Tllrtntion and Flirts.
It is possible, of course, to flirt in cities. Ladies who have the' propensity strong upon them will enact the coquette anywhere but there is a certain matter-of-factness about town life that is unfavorable to tho false romaneo of a flirtation. Your real Cupid can make himself at home in the dust and roar of a metropolis but his bogus double, who is intrinsically no moro like the genuine son of Venus than a porcelain doll is like an authentic baby, and whose arrows trickle but do not stick, plays his little game most effectively in the summor camping-grounds of fashion. The bards have formod an assortment of delicious phrases appropriate to all kinds of romantic scenery, from which people who havo a taste for playing at love can selcct at will Lavender kid becomes Byronic at the "Notch, or Buiwerish at the Lakeside and Flora Mc Flimsey, fresh from the millineries of Gotham, is almost Sapphic by the seashore. Flirting is a delightful amusement, no doubt, but it ought to be confined exclusively to ladies and gentlemen who have no hearts to lose. It is a sad hing for an earnest man to be caught in the toils of a practiced jilt. "Wben he wakes up to a sense of the trick that has been put upon him and finds that the eyes which seemed to "look love" a thousand times were mere ignta faiui used to lead him into a false position, be is apt to judge of the whole sex by the specimen that has beguiled him, and take it for granted that there is no truth in woman. But if a man thus deceived and played upon deserves our sympathy, and his fair temptress our scorn, what sl all wo »ay of the confiding tooman who has |thus been humbugged aod compromised in the eyes of society, and o' the male jilt who has sported with her affections. Her lady companions, one and all, ought to make common cause with her and turn their backs upon the wrotch who has trifled with her heart.
But, alas I in most casoa of the kind they do exactly the.revorse. They are but too apt to sneer at their forsaken sister and patronise tbo coxcomb who has gratified ms miserublo vanity at her expense. Flirts of both sexes are thoroughly con* teuiptible but, as long as lady-killers are popular with the women, and coquettes are run alter by the men, there is no likelihood of the nuisances being abated.
Remarkable Feat by an Old Man.
The New Yoeh»6un -of- the 13th inst., describes a remarkable exploit, an old man of 70 years undertaking to run seven miles within an hour, for a purso ot 5400:
Tho contestant. "Old Bill Touvee," being a great favorite among the "sports" throughout the city, there was accordingly'an immense outpouring of the fraternity to witness the race, which took place between six and seven o'clock yesterdav afternoon.
Although the time allowed "Uncle Bill" for the accomplishment of the feat was much greater than time usually occupied by more youthful runners, still considering the advanced age of the old man, few could be found willing to hazard abet in his favor, the odds at the commencement of tho race standing 10 to 20 against him.
At ten minutes past six o'clock "Uncle Bill," who is a small, wiry man, considerably bent with ago, with snow white hai: and beard, made his appearance upon the course, attended by his assistants, lie wore a suit of flesh colored tights, cloth shoes, and wore no covcxing of any kind upon his head. At twelve minutes past six the signal for starting was given at which the old "pod," closely followed by his assistants, started off at a gentle pace, which was gradually accelerated until the greater part of the circuit of the track was made. As be ran, one of the assistants —one of whom carries a bottle of gin, and the other a can of water—occasionally administered a quantity of those beverages to his head and back, but more frequently to the mouth.
During the first ten circuits the racers exhibited little indication of exhaustation,
bat when the last two mile* were entered upon he suddenly began to leg until the completion ot the last circuit, at which time he bad become so far exhausted as to be anableto (tend, and it required the aid of a number of gentlemen to assist him into the neighboring hotel, where, after considerable effort, he watfresusictated. The race was won in NclO, being 1:50 less than the full time allowed in which to accomplish the seven milea-

Jones was travelling with his wife, and was so gallant in his behavior to his earatposa that madame became uneasy, and remonstrated against hi* attentions as too marked for public observation. "The deuce!" said Jones "we're married, I suppose?" "Yes," said the lady, "but judging by your deportment, fbll^
"Well, what of it!" "Why, not much tat you," said the careful dame! "you are a man but we women have our characters to take care of"
Jones was shocked into propriety for the rest of the journey.
A certain green customer, who a stranger to mirrors, and who swapped infcu the cabin of one of our ocean steamers, stopped in front of a large pier,^ glass, which he took for a door, and seeing his own reflection he said: 'I say mister, when does this ere boat start?'
Getting no answer from the dumb te» flection before him, he again repeated. 'I say, mister, when does this ere boat start?'
Incensed at the silent figure, he broke out: 'Go to thunder! you darned sassafras colored, shockheadea bullcalf you dotp't look as ii you knowed anything anyhow'?'
