ciation holds its annual meeting the presont week in this city. The Ministerial Cirtfe meets to-day. Rev. W.W. Curry, of Indianapolis, reads the annual essay on 'What is our greatest denominational need." The Convention* organizes tomorrow and will continue in session several days. The Annual Sermon is to be preach ^d by Rev. M. G. Mitchell, of Ab* ington.

I©- The Clay County Agricultural Society will hold its Thirteenth Annual Exhibition at the Society's Grounds, at Bowling Green, on the 17th, 18tb, 19th and 20th days of September, 1867. The Premium List is one of tbe most corrplete and liberal ever offered by the Society Open to all adjoining counties. Much of tbe Stock and Mechanical Work in preparation for the State Fair, will be exhibited at the County Fair. The Prem ium List amounts to about $2,000.

David Mitchell imbibed too much of that "which stingeth like an adder," was unconsciously drawn into the Mayor's Court and relieved of $9,00.

Andrew Bell also got his hide outside too much corn juice, and not having so much as $8,50 of the green tinted paper so freely issued by Uncle Sam and distributed by his Agent, Secretary McCullock, will eat the value of that much victuals from Sheriff Kizer's larder.

Wm. Droythaler—(the German for three dollars) -came into court on the heinous charge of whipping his wife.— William claimed that she was his property and be had a right to do with her as he pleased the wife also stated that he had done nothing for which the neighbors should'intermeddle. His Honor gave Mr. $3 some excellent advice, growing quite eloquent a1? he defined tho proper marital relations. Tbe defendant expressed deep regret for past conduct, promised to control bis temper in the future, and was let off with a light fine.

One of the employees of that establishment who has become thoroughly Initiated into the mysteries of the manufacture of tbe gum was recently discharged from the establishment,—and has since divulged the process by which these quids, which young Americans masticate with such velocity and apparent satisfaction, are made. Tbe gum is made of certain parts of gum arabic, gum tragacanth, a small quantily of resin and fat. The fitt used is not lard, that being too expensive, but is a substance expressed from tbe dead bogs, cats, dogs and other animals found on the common of the city.

This is not tbe worst of it. A&er the various ingredients are melted together in a huge kettle, a certain kind of alkali, is put in for the purpose of whitening tbe gum. This alkali is the same that is used by dyers with indigo to give a deep and permanent blue to flannels.

to the publishers—Howe's Subscription Book Concern, 111 Main street, Cincinnati—for a copy of a rare and valuable work. It is entitled "A History of the Western States and Territories, from the Alleghanies to the Pacific, and from the Lakes to the Gulf." It gives their history from tbe date of their settlement, with the mo9t interesting incidents of pioneer life, military events and biographical sketches. It also gives full geographical descriptions of tbe difforent States, Territories and towns, and is illustrated by two hundred and forty appropriate engravings. Its authors are John W. Barber and Henry Howe, both of whom are well-known anulisU in this species of literature. There is in this volumo of over seven hundred pages an immense amount of interesting and important information which cannot be found elsewhere without ransacking whole libraries for it. To the bistoricui student, it is especially valuable, and, in our judgment, from its geographical and historical information, would make an admirable text bjok. The biographical sketches and pioneer inci* dents are alone worth the price of the volume. It is handsomely printed and elegantly bound, and is well worthy of a plttfi# hi every Western library. Agents are referred to the advertisement of this and other works in tbe column of 'Wants.

Startling Marvel.—The

lovers os

the wondorful and mysterious in nature will find good picking in an incident which has just come to our knowledge.— Ubiquity has been heard of, but is seldom known to attach to any human. The evidence in tbe Surratt trial comes as near endowing the prisoner with that faculty as anything we have heard until this. On an obscure street lives a family which baa a ung lad of ten years of age, who is very sickly, having scarcely seen a well day since his birth, wo, it is said, is

It is alleged that

the boy has been seen at intervals during two days in Kentucky, and at same time was helpless on a sick bed at home that he has been seen bathing in tbe Mississippi river when his mother wastoudly leaning above him, and expecting him to expire every moment that be bas been seen at tbe residence of a cousin in Illinois, when he was incapable of leaving bis couch. Such are some of the extraordi nary stories which are told us concerning this poor invalid.

Wha^is stranger still, we are told that this ubiquity, as it must be called, is involuntary on tbe part of the boy tnat at times when he is thus ubiquitous he is seized with violent spasms, and seems to be afraid of all who approach him. He is perfectly conscious of all that is transpiring, and relates conversations and describes all that he has seen while away from where his body really is. In truth, be appears to be afraid of his own being, and from each succeeding spasm occasioned by this extrordinary phenomenon, he awakes more feeble, and is rapidly sinking into the grave. Startling and unreal as this must seem to all intelligen readers, there is something very mysterious connected with the affair. Many aro the stories told by the small circle of acquaintances around the boy.

We do not doubt this account will appear incredible to tbe minds of many of our readers, and while we by no means become responsible for its verity, yet we would remind those who feel disposed to treat the matter as impossible, that instances of a similar nature are mentioned by various writers. Robert Dale Owen gives a case of this kind, and other distinguished authors include tho matter among the range of possible phencmena. Even if substantiated, it Is not a whit more extraordinary tban the well authenticated stories told of Angelique Cotten and Frederica Hauffe.—IND.

enbo's new Arithmetics claim to be the best in the field, and we think not without reason. Why? Because their rule* and analyses are admirably condensed. Because in number and variety of examples tbey are uequalled. Because in Interest and all other business operations (on which they are particularly full) they teach the method actually used by business men. Becausa, being written since the war, tbey are up to the times (which none of the old text-books are)—give present prices, teach that there is a difference between gold and currency, describe Government Securities, and show how to find the comparative results of investments in them.
