Old Wire.

From the Buffalo K* press

During the early part of June, a young man, about twenty-eight years old of fine appearance and gentlemanly address, applied to a physician in this city to attend bis wife, who was about to be confined. The doctor went with him to hishousn and found there a young woman of twenty years of age, whom he attended during her illnes. Before her recovery her husband becoming confidential related to the physician the following singular facts l'he young woman, whom he had at first said was not his wife, really bore that relation to him, having been married to him two years before: but she was not the onlj one who was bound to him by the tender ties of matrimony. Seven years previous he had married in Syracuse a woman of considerable property, whose age is now

For five years he had endured

caresses of his ancient love until she had made a will leuving him the bulk of lier charms, amounting to $15,000, when he married his second wife, and has since been living with both, one in

Syracuse,tho

other in Buffalo. His absence trom

on the plea thut he was going fishing. In tho meantime the younger woman was supported by tho money obtained from the other.

Tne brief respite granted in the shape of a permit to go fistiing began, however, to bo too short, and on each succeeding occasion dnting the

two

years following,

he returned to his venerable wife No. 1 with increasingdisliko. At length he found a plan to got rid ot her, and according to tne story told by the physician he had applied to a Syracuse physician yho had agreed for $1,000 to give her medicine by which she should get no better fast.

The Buffalo physician began to smell a very largo mouse, and quietly asked. '•Why dn't you|come tome?'*

The young man hesitated. He had seen the skill displayed by the doctor in bis treatment of wife No. 2. He was not partial about patronizuig home institutions, and would pay to get rid of Mri. Nc. 1 as speedily and safely as possiblo. Skill after all w»s what he desirei, and he finally ordered the physician

*as done.

"But in that case," replied

It

the doctor,

was finally sottlod that $300

bo paid down, and the young scoundrel falling easily into tho trap' banded over the money.

Tbe following week he brought the old iady to the city and placed her under the doctor's c»re. She was found to be really 111, and the proper remedies prescribed, the doctor so managing that his prescript tions would bear

witness

to the character

of tho medicines given. Before returntog homo the old lady was duly warned not to touch any medicines save those prescribed for her. Following those inctructions she began to improve rapidly, to the intense disgust of her youthful spouse, who soon after brought her again to tho doctor in the city. £o met the physician in front of bis office, and his greeting was: "It's ad—d failure."

He then announced that some other drug must be tried, and'that as it would look bettor for the "old woman" to die among her friends, he proposed to take her to Canada, whither he invited the doctor to come as soon as

la ao«- offered to tlio nOllctnd throughout thecouti try, after having be- proved by the test of eleven yonra, la the New England States, where its merit* Iiryo becomeai well known as the tree from which, in part, it derivss its virtues.

Tlio White Pine Compound Cores Soro Thront, Colds, Coughs, Diphtheria, Bronchitis, Spitting of Blood, and

Pulmonary Affections generally.,, It is a remarkable Remedy for Kidney Complaints, Diabetes,

other complaints.

The White Pine Compound.

"it wa* early in the spring of 1865 that thlCompound was originated. A member of my fanii, ly was afflictod with an Irritation of the throata attouded with a disagreeable cough, I had for some luoulbs previ us thought that a preparation having for its basis the inside bark of white pine might be no compounded as to be very useful in diseases jf the throat and lungs. To test the value of it in tbe catBe alluded to, I compounded a small quantity of the medicine that I had bean planning, aud gave it oonful dost*. The result wa* exceedingly gratifying. Within two day* the irritation of the threat was removed, the cough atibalded and a speedy cure was effested. Soon after this I aent some to a lady la Londonderry, N. II., who had beeu Buffering for some weeks from a bad cough, OTOuioned by a sudden cold, and had ruiaed mucuastreaked with blood. She *oon touud relieff and sent for more. She to about ten ouucei of it, aad got well. J. B. Claike, Esq editor of the Manchester Daily Mirror, made a trial of the same preparation in tbe ca*e of a severe cold, and was cured immediately, lie was so highly pleased with the result*, and so confident ia success aiteuding its sales, if placed before tbe public, that he finally persuaded me to give it a name, andsend it abroad to benefit the sutfsriug. in November, 1850, 1 first advertised it under th* "uuieof White Pine Compound. In two year* om that time there bad been wholesaled in Manchester alone One Hundred Dollar* wcrth, where it took the lead of all the cough remedies in tbe market, and it still malutain* that position. TLeie Is guod reasons for all this it is very soothing aad healing in its nature, is warming to the atomrch, and pleasant withal to th* ta*te, and I*

exceeding

ly cheap. "Aa a remedy for kidney complaint* the White Pine Compound stands uarivalod. it was at originated foi that purpose, but a person in using It for a couth was not only cared of the cough, but waa alao cured of a kidney difficulty of ton

years standing. Since that accidental discovery many thousands have need it for the sam* complaint, and have been completely cured."

The above was written by Dr. Poland, in I860.— Sins, then, as In Manchester, the White Pin*Compound has takeu the lead of all Cough Bemedles, aa wpll as preparations-for tbe cure of Kidney difficulties, In every city- town, village and hamlet throughout the New England State*.

This remedr is as sate aud pleasant to tak*a* it ll effectual. Tiia ditor of the Manchester Daily and

Weekly

Mirror, in the leader of tbe Daily, thus writes of the Compound: "The White Pine Compound Is advertised st much length in our columns, and we are liappy to learn that the demand for it Is increas ng beyond all previo-a expectations It is the very beat medicine for coughs and colds we kuowof, and no family that has oure useditwi'l ever be without it. We speak from our own knowledge it is sure to kill a cold, and pleasant as it is sur' The greatest inventions come by accident, and it is singular that the Whit* Pine Compound made for coughs and colds should prove to be the rreatest remedy for kidney difficulties known.— Jut so it Is. We cannot doubt it,so manv testimonials corns to ua from wall known mea. Beaides, tho character of Dr. Poland ia such that we know that he will not countenance what Is wrong. For years a Baptist clergyman, studying medicine to flud remedies for his ailments, with a delicate, consumptive look, standing with one foot upon the gravo, be made the discovery which has saved himself, and called out from others the stmngest testimonials possible. We have known Dr. Polaad for years, and never kaew a more conscientious, honest, upright man, and are glad to state that wa believe whatever he aaysabout hi* White Pine Compound.
