The Ex-VIce nnd Ex-President Turned Inside Ont by a

Niagara
Falls,
August
7, 1867.
Could I come to Niagara without calling on my old friend, tbe eminent publicist, Millard Filmore? Of course not. found him as calm as a summer's morn-
Indeed, ho assured me he was never ed bnt once in his life, and that was when he made his great speech against sectionalism, when he declared that if he was a Southerner he would not submit to the election of a sectional candidate like Abraham Lincoln. This was the speech of the century—the utterance of a profound political geniue—the proclamation of a sagacious, patriotic, broad statesman. "Do you know," said Millard Fillmore, "that 1 take more pride in that effort, than in any other of ray life?"
He is looking well—as rotund and selfcomplacent as when he was in the chair at tho White House. His first salutation was, ''What will you take I hesitated, and ke noticed it with his usual acuteness. "Oh, you need not fear 1 shall not offer you whisky or brandy," he said. 1 am not the Old Public Functionary

sylvania, who has killed nearly all his friends with old rye." I laughed at his wit, which' pleased him greatly. "Come," said ho, "let us have a bottle of cham»
pagne." and thereupon he rang the boll, A^ien a big Irish woman appeared with a tray, containing a bottle of wine, a half-dozen sandwiches, and two glosses, one of them the jeweled goblot sent to him by Abdel Hassan. It is Etrurian, and is thickly studded with diamonds and precious stones. When the champagne is poured into it, the goblet appears to bo on fire—it blazes and corruscates and foams, until you begin to be apprehensive of an explosion. As 1 held the glass at arm's length, in wonder, the ex-President said calmly, "Fear not, but drink!" and being vory tired and thirsty, I did drink, and deeply, too. He looked at me benignantly—allchampagne drinkers are sympathetic—and seemed to anticipate a question. "Roederer, or Carte d'or?" I inquired. "The Widow," ho replied sententiously. I filled my goblet again.
"Our troubles are
not over yet." I nodded. "I saw this thing corning. I knew there was trouble brewing—felt it in my bones but what could 1 do? The people were mad—they could not see their friends, or hoar the voice of wisdom. If I had been at the helm I would have called in the assistance of tho Blair family, and the great calamity of civil war would have been averted. Old Blair is the greatest man this country has produced Montgomery Blair is deop in statecraft, and

me that the New York
politicians trouble him every summer with persistant applications for conductorships and other offices on the road run-. ning to Buffalo nnd the Falls. He has no influence, he sny3, in that direction. As I was about to grasp his manly hand, and take my departure from his hospitable mansion, he turned and said with peculiar impressiveness: "When our beloved country

rors of civil war, I walked my room until midnight, but it did no good.''

up In Jail, A few weeks ago an accomplished and beautiful young lady of Bellevue, Iowa, was married to a young man who was smitten by her charms as he saw her on the levee one day whilo tho boat was passing. He learned her name and opened a correspondence with her, wbich resulted in marriage. What happened after that is told by "tbo St. Louis Democrat, of the 15ih instant, as follows. "Frank Marsden, alias Morton, was arretted yesterday by officer Jacques, on a telegram received from Brick Pomcrjy, of the La Crosse Democrat, offering a reward of $100 for his arrest. The man is charged with falsely representing himself as an authorised agent of the Democrat, obtaining railroad passes as such, and other depredations. "The officer found Captain Manden, as be styles himself, hard at work as an upholster in the shop of F. Darke, on Olive street, between Twelfth and Thirteenth. There is a touch of romance in the history of this man which shows that he has a taking way with the ladies, as well as with the newspaper editors. It is stated that some two months ago, at Bellevue, Iowa, he saw some young ladles looking at a
young lady, and brought bar to tms city. Iv %aSk&h*$ *Wf Xdtft night young wife visitod th& sta-1 b&e «w? tion house, and wept bitterly on discovering the character of the man she had sworn to love through lifts. She happened to have friends in the city, and one of them took charge of her, and to-day will send' her back to her parents in Iowa. Bomantic young ladies, and school girls who delight in anonymous correspondence, should learn a lesson from the experience of this unfortunate young wo* man."

Her Wide Turkish trousers were of rose-colored silk the sleeves of her embroidered jacket fell away loosely from a white arm a little jaunty Greek cap surmounted the glossy braids, the silken tassel reaching to the silky fringes of her hair. She did not take her seat, English fashion with the mother, on the divan as is sometimes done by way of courtesy to the guest, but dropped, a la Turk, on the cushions near our. feet.— While we were saying to ourselves, 'What a sweet child this is 1" arid Wondering whether she would ever develop the affections of young ladyhood, the old man spoke of her as the wife of his son, and said they had been married three years. It is "not uneommon for marriages to take place in the east when the bride is only eight years of age. now offered to the afflicted throughout the country, after baring bei'u proved by the teat of eleven yen rg, in the New England States, where its morits iiavebeeonieas well known as the troe from which, in part, it derives its virtues.
The White Pine Compound Cares Sore Throat, Colds, Coughs, Diphtheria, Bronchitis, Spitting of Blood, and
Pulmonary Affections generally, 'ft is a remarkable Remedy for Kidney Complaints, Diabetes,
Difficulty of Voiding Urine, Bleeding from the ^Kidneys ii and Bladder, Gravel and

other complaints. "t[
The White Pine Compound.
"It was early in the spring of 1865 that thiCompound was originated. A member of my fhhil, ly was afflicted with an irritation of the throat* attended with a disagreeable cough, I had for some months prevhus thought that a preparation having for its basis tbe
Inside bark of wbito pine might
he so compounded as to bo very useful in diseases of the throat and lun^s. To test the value of it in tbe case alluded to, compounded a small quantity ef th* medicine that I had been planning, and gave it oonfnl doses. The result was exceedingly gratifying. Within two days tho Irritation of the throat was removed, the cough subsided and a speedy cure was effoeted. Soon after this I sent some to a lady in Londonderry, N. H., who bad been suffering for some week* from a bad cough, oicasioned by a sadden cold, and had raised mucus streaked with blood. She soon found relieff-apd sent for more. She took about ten ounce) of it, and got well. J. B. CJarke. Esq editor of the Mancheeter Daily Mirror, made a trial of the same preparation in tbe case of a severe cold, and was cared immediately. He was so highly pleased with the results, and so confident in success attending its sale*, if placed before tho nnblic, that be finally persuaded me to give it a nrnne, and send it abroad to benefit the suffering. In November, 1855, I first advertised It ander the name of White Pine Compound. In two yaar* from that time there had been wholesaled in Manchester alone One Hundred Dollar* wcrtb, where it took the lead or all the oough (remedies in tbe market, and it still maintain* that poMtiob. Theie is good reasons for all this it is very soothing aad healing in its nature, is warming to the stomach, and pleasant withal to the taste, and is exceedingly cheap. 1 "As a rotnedy for kidney complaint* the white Pino CoTnpeund stands unrivaled. It was nrt originated for that purpose, bat a person In using it for a con th was not only enrvd of the cough, but waa also cured of a kidnoy difficulty of ten years standing. 8ince that accidental discovery many thousands have nsed it for tbo same complaint, and have been completely cured."
The above was written by Dr. Poland, in 1880.— Since then, ns in Manchester, the White Pin* Componnd ha* taken the lead of all Congh Remedies, as well as preparatlons-for the core of Kidney difficulties, in every city town, village and hamlet throughout the New England State*.
This remedy is as sate and pleasant to tak* as It is effectual. The editor of the Manchester Dailvand Weekly Mirror, in the leader of the Daily, thus write* of the Compound: "The White Pine Compound I* advertised at mnch length in oar column*, and w* are happy to learn that the demand for It is Increas ng beyond all previous expectations It is the very best medicine for cough* and colds we know of, and no family that has one* nsed it will' ever be without it. We speak from oar own knowledge it is snre to kill a cold, and pleasant a* it I* sure Tbe greatest inventions come by accident, and It Is singular that th* White Pin* Compound made for coughs and colds ahonld prove to be the greatest remedy for kldn.y difficulties known.— But se it is. We cannot doubt it, *o manv testimonial* come to n* from well known men. Besides, the character of Dr. Poland I* such that w* know that he wtll not countenance what i* wrong. For years a Baptist clergyman, studying medicine to find remedies for his ailment*, with a delicate, consumptive look, standing with one foot upon the grave, be made the discovery which has savod himself, and called out from others the staaagMt testimonials possible. We have known Dr. Poland for years, and never kcew a more conscientious, honest,* nprlght man, and are glad to state that we believe whatever be .aysabout hi* White Pino Compound.
