OUB CHICAGO LETSJtft-.
CHTCAOO, August 19, 18§7* TBt
WABKINC
To grain operators- which I noticed two weeks ago was not heeded, and a week later the bolt fell. There was a great deal of staring when tb« ministers of the majesty of the sovereign law, popularly known only as constables, strode Into the midst of the grain "ring'1 on change, and tapping A., B. and C. on the shoulder nodded with solemnity and winked with significance. "Seller ten" was heard but twice or thrice before siJenoe fell like a pall upon the astonished crowdand every man glared and waited to see What would be coming next. Glared, I say you would have thought it all of that, if you had watched the firey glances that poured a concentrated flood upon the self-possessed (and rather gratified) represeniatives of the State. In a few moments an understanding was reached the names of the distinguished prisoners were called, and forming in military order behind the bailiffs, they marched with alacrity towards the eminent Justice upon whoso order the warrants were issued, encouraged by hearty cheers from their comradcs left behind. This beginning was made at noon on Saturday, the 10th iust. The Justice introduced Mr. D. A. Goodrich, the complaining witness to the defendants, who proceeded to discuss bis personal into rests with extraordinary frankness anl with significant emphasis. Mr. Goodrich alluded to the importance of vindicating the majesty of the law—a law created for thosalutary purpose of putting an end to gambling on change a law which every virtuous and well-disposed citizen must desire to see enforced in the pulic interest. Whereunto the irate defendants made profane and trivial responses, intimating means of counter irritation at their command which might give Mr. Goodrich pain. The Justice interposed and bound over the grain merchants to appear at the Recorder's Court in the autumn and show cause why each culprit should no contribute one thousand dollars to the city treasury for each illegal transaction proven against him—one-^half to encourage the personal bank balance of Mr. Goodrich, and the balance to defray the necessary expenses attending the impartial administration of justice. Mr. Goodrich was also bound over in the sum of $3,000 to appear when summoned as complaining witness.
On Monday, expectation was on tiptoe, rumor having loudly asserted that not less than an hundred additional arrests would ccrtainly bo made on the floor of the Hall at high noon.
Tho vicinity was occupied with eager observers until at half past twelve the Board adjourned without interruption. The reporters were confidentially advised on Monday evening, and confidentially informed the general public on Tuesday morning, that the ono hundred operators who should havo been arrested on Monday, would cortuinly be gobbled up on Tuesday, and that another hundred would be taken at the same time and plaqo to make an oven thing of it. But Tuesday passed without the stirring incident, jand so did Wednesday and Thursday and all the rest.
Of course there were special meetings of the full Board meanwhile, and of cojirse notion was taken to make the cau^e of tho members under prosecution the c^use of the whole Board. Mr. Goodrich Biay greatly desire tho several multiples of $500, which sum within such easy refech but it is more than doubtful if he 6ver touches one of them. The Board of Tfade has moro lawyers, more dollars, and liore timo than he has, and backing the defendant's as it does, there will be small chance of their conviction. Of course in goncral terms it is confessed that grain was sold "short," contrary to the spirit nnd tho letter of tho law but it is so easy to declaro an unpleasant statue uncon stitutional, that conviction in a lqwer court will decido nothing, even if secured. Mr. Goodrich is an ex-attorney, ox-com-mission mcrclmnt, and ^ex-several other things, tbc papers say, t*bo seems to have entered upon tho prosecution as a direct approach to fortuno. He is either a bold man or a very rash man to beard such a lion as this in its den. But the sequel will tell its own story.
A REWARD
of $500 for the recovery ot Gen. Gillmoro's body was offered on Tuesday, and on Thursday tho body was found ty a sailor near the spot where the boat was found on tho Sunday preceding. The funeral ceremonies on Friday were strictly private, in consideration of tho illness of Mrs. Gillmoro. Mr. W. F. Coolbaugh, one of Genoral Gill moms surities, took the oath of office on Tuesday and will act as Postmaster until a legal appointment is mado.
GRACE GREENWOOD
Issponding a summer vacation at the residence of Dr. Clarke. Grace is a bit passee in years and wrinkles, mayhap, but has all tho vivacity of girlhood in her talk and in her writing, yet, in private circles, sho is a bit elephantic, if the truth must be told rather ''rough on" the more delicate social propensities, and by no means so charming as her exquisite stories. In tho newspapers she is the realization of a fine ideal other women, who are noth* ing in tho newspapers, are Grace Greenwoods at homo. Thus gifts and graces are equitably divided, that each may have a share.
BUSIXES9.
Is still dull—so tho jobbors day—but you would never guess it by going through the business streets, crowded from morning to night, with eager, hurrying, hard working men.
PEACHES
Begin to come in freely, but not yet of good quality they are neither ripe nor sound. Still they are cheap for the tupply is abundant, and an immense crop is yet to come. So all the world and bis wife are buying whole boxes of peaches to prove whether the cholera is really coming or not Duos.

——CHIBBOTTRG, FBAXCZ, July 28, 1867. "We arrived here on the morning ot file ifttb. This is one of the finest harbors and naval stations in France. The break. -^rtJfjr^hich protects the harbor is the largest of its kind in the world, being five miles in extent, and on which are erected tlx
towers, Hid to mount fifty guns eachOn the break-water, exclusive of the towers, are twelve batteries of eight guns each, which would make on the breakwater alone three hundred and ninety-six gifns. The shore is lined with batteries mounting, heavy guns, including the fortress upon the hill. The break-water was commenced in the fifteenth century, and finished during the reign of the present Emperor." "The Navy Yard is a very fine one, perhaps the finest in France. It contains eleven stone dry-docks. Xhero are in building five iron-clad rams, or rather frigate and r«m combined, and numbers of vessels are laid up in ordinary. The stacks of cannon are immense, but they aro so small tbat balls from them against our monitors would be like throwing peas at an elephant. In like manner, the plating on their vessels ij only four or five inches in thickness, so tbat in the event of a war the naval battles will be all onesided." "The Armory," or as the French hav» it, "Salle des Artnes," is the finest establishment of the kind I have seen. It con tains every kiod of arm jn use, or that has been in use for the last three centu ries. There are about three thousand muskets, and as many carbines, occupy ing twenty-one racks, which extend cross wise of the ball. There are also cutlasses, pistols, daggers, &c- In all parts of the hall are decorations, such as chandeliers, columns, arches, standi, eagles, flags, &c., and all are made oi arms or parts of some branch of an arm. It impressed me with the greatness of tho French Ration, on land.!' "Of the vessels in harbor are eight A merican men-of-war, viz: our
M.,
fleet, the
Macedonian, Dale and Savannah the Franklin, (flag ship of Admiral Farragut,) the Colorado, Tuscarora, Frolic, (tender to the Colorado,) and one other. The French iron-clad, Magenta, and other French vessels are here. The Magenta is a formidable looking craft, but she car ries too many guns. One of our monitors could send her to the bottom in half an hour, unless she could bring her prow to bear. Her prow is of the same shape as that of the famous "Stonewall," which saw at the Washington Navy Yard. It runs out from her bow and extends ahead under water." "A ride of twelve hours conveyed'me from Cherbourg to Paris. I put up at the "Grand Hotel de Nice," (a very nice place and charges reasonable,) and after completing my toilet called a cab and started for the "Exposition" before reaching it, however, I stopped at the Palace of Industry and heard four thousand musicians playing simultaneously as one band. They comprise the, different bands of nationalities which are at the exposition. I did not see an American among them. The first prize was given to the Prussians, and the second to the Spani ards. Again started for the exposition and arrived at the grand entrance. The palace of the exposition is of an oblong form, an ellipse, and tho outside is devoted to tbe restaurants of the different na* tions, each nation occupying a wedge shaped space or area. This area, this wedge, is divided into transverse sections, giving to each department its duo proportion. The next space is tbe rawmaterial and manufactory department next the fancy department, and inside ot all, the garden wherein are the houses, temples, Churches, mosques, kiosks, &c. of different nations, each in its separate department." "I visited first tbe American department, saw the machinery, &c. The display was imposing. My stay was too liiriUed to attompt anything like a critical comparison as between the merits of our own productions and skill, and tbose of othor nations. Tho awards, however, speak well for our skill as a nationality. Of the five hundred American pieces of machinery contributed, two-hundred and sixty»five have received the medal. Our Stroet car is the wonder of the Parisians They have no such thing here. What they call street cars in Paris are nothing more nor less than omnibueses running on tracks." "It would be useless for me to attempt to describe to you the many things of interest which I saw at the Exposition. 1 hope to be ablo to narrate, in person, the incidents, accidents, and other passages in the history of my visit to Paris." "Leaving tho Palace of the Exposition at 6 r.
I dined, took cab, drove through
the Boulevards and other drives of Paris, visited the Garden of the Tuilleries, and then directed the "Cocher" to drive me to tho principal public squares, columns, buildings, as the Palace and Column de Vendome, La Bourse, (the Exchange,) Column de Juillet, &c. At 9 P. M, went to the American Circus, and stayed a few minutes, and then drove to buildings of note—as the Hotel de Louvre, Hotol de Yille, Hotel des Invalids, &c. At 1
M.,

returned to my hotel and turned in. Took an early train and returned to this place same evening." "On the 27th, while lying at Cherbourg, at 2 p.
the Imperial Yacht, haviug on
board the Empress Engenie, was seen steaming into the harbor. As a fitting reception, and in honor of the occasion, all the ships in the harbor were dressed with flags, and-the yards manned. As the Yacht steamed in, all the ships fired salutes, as well as the batteries ashore and on the break-water. Immediately after the firing ceased the different ships cheered in succession. After steaming about the harbor, greeted by cheers wherever she went, the Yacht came to anchor, and wasj pulled to the Magenta, (the flag-ship of the French Admiral on thU station,) wheru the Empress was greeted with tremendous cheers. After a short sUy aboard the Magenta, her barge was taken in tow by a steam launch and she boarded the Franklin, (flag-ship of Admiral Farragut,) where she was greeted with hearty cheers from
the Yankee tars. During tlw.wl her visit the ship was sarrousded Hjltb boats. The boats from the French men-of-war formed in semi-circle on the aide of the vessel, and when the Emprea took leave of the Franklin the men stood on the thwarts (seats) with their oars toesed, and as the Empress passed each boat in succession, the men in it shouted •vire la Empress,' and immediately let fall and followed in her wake. As she left the Franklin a salute of twenty-one guns was fired." "At night all the French ships in the harbor were illuminated. It was grand The Magenta, Flanders and .Normandy, were a perfect mass of light from: the truck to the water-line. Other ships were illuminated, but I saw none that equalled the Flanders. On shore tbe illumination was no less grand and imposing. !For over an hour the sky was literally filled with rockets and other fire-warks.— Among other beautiful and significant displays, I noticed in particular an illuminated Crown—perfect in all its details. Tbe Imperial Yacht was not illuminated. Numerous boats (illuminated) were pass ing about from ship to ship almost: the whole evening. Taken all in all, the scene was more like that of an Oriental romance than a reality."
rotlier Crawford's Sermon. A Southern exchange gives this aslthe first sermon of anew minister in a village in that section. He began apologetically as follows "You don't see me to-day in tbe dr«s I alters wear I come among you ai stranger, and am cow tricked out in my store clothes. I am not a proud man, but I thought it would be more becom ing among strangers."
After this he raised a hymn in w&ich tbe congregation joined. He thon began his sermon.
Mr DXAB BERTHBINAKD SISTERS: First and foremost I'm guine to tell you tbe affestin partin I had with my eongregation at Bethel Cbapel. After I pad got through with my farewell sermoi aa I come down out ol' the pulpit, the lold gray headed brethren and sisters who lis tened to my voice twenty years, Crowded around me, and with sobbing voices and tearful eyes, said farewell, brother Crawford 1
As I walked down the aisle,(the young ladies trickled out in their finery, brass jewelry, gegaws, jim cracks, paints and flounces, looked qp with their bright eyes, and pronounced with their rosy lips, farewell brother Crawford I
The young meu, in tbeir tight pants, boots, high collars and dashy waist coats, smelling of pomatum and cigar smoker— with shanghai coats and striped Zebra pants—they too said, farewell, brother Crawford 1
The little children—lambs in the foldlifted up their tiny hands and small voices, and with one accord said, farewell, brother Crawford.
The colored brethren of tbe congregas tion now came forward (black sheep who had been admitted to the fold under my ministry) with tears rolling down their cheeks, they too said, Farewell, brother Crawford!
As I got on my horse and bade adieu to my congregation torever—I turned to take a last look at tbe church where I had preached more than twenty years—and as I gazed at its dilapidated walls and moss covered roof—it too seemed to say—Farewell, brother Crawford 1
As I rode through the village, the people who poked their heads outen the winders, and the servants who leant on their brooms, all seemed to say—Farewell, brother Crawford!
As IJpassed along down the highway, through, the forest, the wind, as it sighed and whistled through the tree tops, playing on the leaves and branches the burden of salvation, it too seemed to sayFarewell, brother Crawford I
Crossing a little creek that was gurg ling and singing over its pebbly bed, as it rejoiced on its way to the great ocean of eternity, it too seemed to say—Farewell, brother Crawford 1
As I rode along down a hot dusty lane, an old sow that was asleep in a fence corner, jumped out of a sudden with aloud droo-too, broo-too she too seemed to say —Farewell, brother Crawford!
My horse got frightened and jumped from under me, and as he curled'his tail over his back—kicked up his heels and ran off he too seemed to say—Farewelj^ brother Crawford I
