thttt the School Board of that city has selected Mr. M. Z. Tinker, of this city, ns instructor of music in the city schools and the papor adds that he has accepted We sincerely hope ihis is incorrect, as hia placo cannot easily be filled in our own schools.
The Evansville Courier of Satur
day says there is no use disguising the fact, there have beon several cases of cholera in tho city the pact few days There has not been a single death in thr cleanly or respectable portion of the city All tho sickness is confined to negroes and crowded tenement houses, among people intemperate in diet and uncleanly.
The "Manufacturer and Miner,'
tho name of the new paper just started in Brazil, is on our table It is edited by Thos. J. Gray, late of Bowling Green and E. M. B. Hooker, well known as a war correspondent of some merit. The first number is quite spicy, presents a clean, neat typographical appearance, and is enthusiastically devotod to the interests of Brazil. The paper advocates the Union cause, and in this as well as pe ouniarily we wish it success.
Our readorii wili remember that
man nnuiod Gray was severely injured by the falling of a platform at the last Fourth of July celebration. He is still in a cripplod condition, and it may be a year before he is able to do any work by which to gain a livelihood. Ho has.a wife and four children, with house rent to pay, and his means are entirely exhausted. Ho resides on Seventh Street, just south of the New School House, and we can assure our readers that in that house can be found worthy objects of charity.
SUMMER BEVBRAGK.—Here is A recipe for making ginger beer, a very wholesome and refreshing summer beverage Put two gallons of cold water into a pot upon the fire, add to it two ounces of good gin. gor, bruised, and two pounds of white or brown sugar. Let this come to a boil, and continue boiiing for about half an hour. Then skim the liquor and pour it into a jar or tub along with one sliced lemon and half an ounco of cream of tartar. When nearly cold pat in a tea* spoonful of yeast, tc cause the liquor to work. Tho beer is uc* made, and after it has worked for two days, strain it, and bottle it for use. Tie down tho corks .firmly.
MAYOR'S C«UBT.—The following peraonfi passed in review before the Mayor yesterday:
Christian Smith, for the very disorderly conduct of using violent and insulting language to one David Smith, paid $6,60.
Kit-hard Irwin, for intoxication and disorderly conduct handed in $7,00. Sarah Vanslyke, a wandering prosti lute, was arrested, and on promise to leave town, was furnished a push to Char ieston, Illinois.
4®- At Brazil, Sunday morning, at one o'clock, afire broke out that threatened, at one time, to destroy the t.«w* Through the exertion of citizens the fii was prevented from spreading. The total loss was about $5,000, with no insur ance.
AN EDITORIAL ON BUTTERMILK.—The readers of tho newspapers have doubUe.-s learned that which is painfully apparent to the editor, as ho performs iiiednily duties, that tho present is "A terribiy dun timo for news," a6 well as for business.— One of our exchanges, the New York Ga zotto, haa, it appears in sympathy will: the dull seoson, "soured," on sia.u on topics as politics, trades and kindred subjects, and wisely, we think, turnod its editorial attontion to the useful and interesting subject of "Buttermilk." In the absence of any more startling news, it brings to light or revives some valuable facts, which constitute good reading matter during the heated term. It says there is a very largo increase in the consumption of buttermilk throughout the country, and especially in New York. It states that in the avenue to the east and west oi Broadway there are numerous milkshops— for the most part at corners— wliero the producs of the churn is rutuiled regularly at the counters as a beverago, at two cents a mus? full. Many of these shops sell ae much as a thousand a a E a of a in wanj' persons who havo no faith in ui eral waters, aud to whom the mm.u cock tail is an abomination, may be sivu in the milk stores, quailing tho rtisaiu and salutary buttermilk out oi gi'e^t white nutmegs. Numbers cf v.onio and children come with large tin eur,» and take away quantities of it fur fumity use It is an exceedingly beHitli.n'i drink, cooling to the bluoJ, whil« it m-U at the same time as a mil') nparient.
Wo published not long since, the opinion of a Kentucky physician that this wholesome bsversgo properly patroniz-i, would prolong life fully one-third. Bu it appears our Kentucky buttermilk due.tor was not tho discovorer of this delightful fact. Our cotemporary say? that yr .ir. ago a French philosopher set Xortii this- eurious theory. He averred that in butter milk he had discovered tho secret of reewing the human constitution, an$ of indefinitely prolonging human lifo. Tlie interior arrangements t-o human -ub ject, as well as of animals, is genera!, ,1ccording to this philosoprwr. who migh have been a French Horace Grte'.ey. bear a strong analogy to steam boiieVv inasmuch as, in the course of time, they become incrusted, or coated, with pernicious matter. To remove this, nothing but acids would be efficacious ana .be only acid which would render this serv icr and, at the same time, »xercise a beneficial influence on the health, is, as our savant tells us, that contained ia buttermilk. The Gazette declines to investigate fully this theory, but it does not hesitate to express tho conviction thai buttermilk would be more conducive to longevity than gin cocktails.
This in teres tint fact is stated. A curious experiment has been trird \vib buttermilk by testing its modest qualities against the "regal purple stream" o"

There will be a meeting of tho

A balloon wedding is
on the carpet, to come off during the week of the Ssengerfest at Indianapolis.— The couple is ready, and a balloonist is making the necessary arrangements for thebridal tour in tho clouds.
CUCUMBERS.—Our lady readers will NO dcubt be glad to learn that cucumbers are ood for something besides slicing up in vinegar and laying on the Btpiacb like a pound and a half of cold lead. An change tells us how to make "cucumber toajt,'' as follows "Select your cucumbers—fresh, criip, medium size—such as you would preler if served up in the usual manner. Pur', or slice up lengthwise, in cuts a quarter of an inoh thick. Rinse in cold water, dip oacli slice singly in flour, aud hurry them into the dripping pan, using for material to try them in, the gravy in which either ieaf steak, veal cutlets or mutton cops were cooked or butter may be used but be sure to fry briskiy until the slices are a light brown on both sides. Have your oread toasted, buttered or dipped, as prefer, and close at liund.. Slip the siices of cucumbers hot from the pan bntwoen the slice of toast and servo at once.— Any one following these directions imN plieitly will find cucumber toast really good to eat."
THE ROUGH COUNTRY.—The beauty of tho late "peculiar institution" was shown in a little incidont at tho County Clerk's office on Saturday. A couplo of negro mon came for tho purpose of procuring a marriage license for one of them, but upon being required to give the name of the damsel, thoy wero unablo to go any far. ther than "Mary." She had no surnamn never bad any, explained the expected husband and, after consultation between tbem, tho name of tho girl's late master in the South was given, and the license madoout. When the man was leaving, he saw the incident had exeiti-d thirisibles of those present, but to him ii was in nowise funny. With an eloquence, which speaks for itself, he said "It can't be helped, sir wo come from de rouyh country." Thank the Lord, tho man and woman are now one, joined together by the power of tho lav in a civilized land, ami tho daughter of the couple, should such be the issue, will never have to no knowledge the humilation und shum? of having como from the "rough country —Indianapolis Journal..
buttermilk by the taste. Several glasses are filled with claret, and an equal numv ber with buttermilk, and they are handed alternately to the blindfolded person, who tastes them. For a few turns he will name the respective liquids correctly but after a while his sense of taste becomes' confused, and he insists that buttermilk is claret, and vice versa. We never tried the experiment, and don't know that we shall. Those who are curious may. We don't believe in mixed liquors. But if there is the long sought "elixir of life" in this acidulous liquid, as claimed by the philosopher and the Kentucky docto~, wo ase in favor of buttermilk.—Evansville Journal.
SUMMER DRINKS.—The best summer beverage is cold water, ice cold, if you pieafe, but by all means grasp the glass by the hand, take a swallow at a time, remove the glass from your lips for a few seconds, then take another swallow in this way it wili be found that the thirst will be thoroughly satiated before half the wat«?r has been taken whereas, if .it had bef-n swnllowed continually the whole eon taiits would not have satisfied the thirst.
Aa many persons have dropped dead from drinking greedily of water not ice cold, when much heated and fatigued, this precaution may save many a life.
Buttermilk is another admirable summer beverage. Its acidity cools the sys tem and acts slightly on the liver, and thus promotes the passing of the bile and other impurities from the body.—Hall's Journal of Health.
How IT is DONE.—Any of our lady renders can be beautiful, by adopting the following simple method: "A young lady who has been the reigning belle in Boston for some years, and wUu is now growing rather passe and afraid of losing her laurels, is said to be using every means to preserve her beauty. She eats arsenic to make her eyes bright, and is obliged to increase tho quantity continually chews slate pencils to make her complexion white drinks vinegar and lemonade to keep her waist small uses Email de Paris1 and rouge, and pencils her eyebrows blackens the lower part of her eyes sleeps with her hands in gloves and never, under any circumstances, goes out in the sun. Besides this, she is said to own threo hundred dollars' worth of false hair, rats, mice, curls, cushions, puffs, braids, cascades, and waterfalls included. It is to be hoped thut, after all these efforts to be beautiful, she will eventually become a wife."

THE WASHINGTON LIBRARY COMPANY of Philadelphia gains credit and support weiy day. The sale of stock surpass all expectation, and tho prospect is, that the funds for tiio noble object will be secured even in advance of the time anticipated. Tha reason is obvious. Tho design is worthy, and creditable to tho patriotic hearts who are laboring to reward a too much neglected class. The funds go into responsible hands, and the public have no fears that they will be mis-directed. The plan adopted satisfies the scruples of the most conscientious, and has the endorsement of eminent legal authority. It is oy its distinctive features entirely removed rrom the taint of catch-penny schemes which have so often been the means of imposing on the public. It gives to purchasers of its stock a full equivalent for the consideration. All its transactions are open and above board. It has no concealments, and the reputation of the managers is such that they cannot afford to be dishonest in this transaction. Itead advertisement. [dwlt.
