OF

LAKE MICHIGAN.

MILWAUKEE WHALERS HARPOON AND SHOOT HIM.

All About His Terrific Aspect and Tragic End.

AWFUL LIE.

The Milwaukee Daiiy Wisconsin of the 13th, had a long and labored accoui^t of tho capturo of the Monster of Lake Michigan tne huge fish which has cf late formed the subject of so many sonsational reports by the locals of the Lake cities. According to this voracious account, a party with guns, pistols and improvised weapons, went in search of the "sea-sor-pent" early Monday morning, in a tug, and at once found him at the mouth of the river. Says the reporter 'To fury was he kisliing the waters of our noble lake with bis long tail, while his head moved to and fro with an uneasy, nervous jerk. It was evident to all that the monster had not discovered the approach of his assailants, and dreamed not that his latter end was so near. Tho good Davidsou steamed off, but still that tail splashed and that head jerked. Sucn a tail and such a bead

As near as accurate eyes could judge, that head was larger than a large beer vat while the jaws were strongly bound, and lined with teeth like great spikes From the head the body tapered on till not one of tho party could tell where the tail com* menced In length, he was at lea't one hundred leet, and his hidescempd tough and covered with scales tbat resembled oyster shells over-lapping each other. He i-eemed a terrible monster, and no wonder that there were few in tho party who possessed the temerity to up boldly to the attack. The great jaws worked rapidly, and it was evident the monster was taking his meal, not dreaming of danger. He seemed to feed upon the stuff that came out of the river with the tide thus early in the morning. There was noth ing dainty about his monstership, for he kept his jaws at work, and the stuff float* ed in to be ground to powder, and to digest at leisure.

The party had drawn sufficiently near to watch. They could see the jaws work, and could hear- the crushing of bunes as the huge animal made his meal. It was a fearful sight. Large white fish and sturgeon were borno on by the current of these jaws. Tho trap closed, and, like wheal between the burs, they were ground without the power to protest. Dead dogs that floated down went the same way, and ouce they saw the carcass of a defunct horse meet its fato. As the jaws closed upon tho bones of this the huge frame of the monster quivered, but he was master of tho situation and the food was bolted. So intently did the party watch the feeding of the monster that they did not notice their boat was drifting gently toward the seething pool made by the monster's tail. Suddenly it struck the boat. The lookers on were knocked nearly from their feet —the boat careened nearly to the starboard rail—she shook and trembled in every joint. Tho engineer came rushing up from below with the startling news that tho boat had sprung a leak and was making wator fast, but he was followed by the fireman who quieted the alarm by tho assurance that such was not the case, but that a water butt only had been started by the concussion. It' the lookers on were astonished, so was the monttor No sooner did he feel the blow then lie stoppod his meal, ejected what ho had in his mouth, raised his immense head up out of the water at least six feet, and turned his fiery and flashing eyes upon the boat. There is not one of the party will ever forget that look, or who did not quail before it.

It lasted but a moment, and thea the huge monster began to move. Not rapidly as if frightened, but|slowly, carefully as "if he bad completed his work, and as if he disdained to notice so trifling an interrtiption. He turned his head first toward the boat, and his huge jaws opened. It was an instant of terror to all. With quick forethought, Capt. Consaul let the full steam into the whistle and it yelled and shrieked like ten thousand devils. At tho samo moment Mr.,Reed, ono of the party, threw a harpoon. The barbed iron struck the monstor fairly in the eye, and the red blood spouted out until it struck the boat. Such a yell of agony as was uttored by the beast. We cannot describe it. It drowned the sound of the whistle completely. It was like no other sound we ever heard. It partook of the human wail, commingled with the agonizing screech of the "painter" in the dead ot night. It chilled the blood of all. It s«!emed to pal.-y all so that they could not •peak, but they turned from one to the other aud merely looked their feelings. The huge monster in his agony^ fairly throw himself out of the water. The line attached to the harpoon snapped like a kite cord, as the mouster fell back, while the water of tbe lake rose in high and troubled waves.

Then the monster turned. Its agony sunk into moans and sobs which he vainly tried to smotner. Ho was wounded bady even unto death. His agony could be seen in the moving of his tail. It seemed to paralyze his strength, and he traveled slowly out into the lake. Capt. Consaul immeaiately headed his boat and gave chase. The monster seemed to feel that now he must put forth all his strength, if he would escape, and be bent him to the task. Tbe affair was exciting. Guns and pitluls were fired. The bullets struck tbe

wnm§

tough mail with which the monster covered and skipped off ovef thlr #atif. They did not injure him in tbe leaat, bat only lent speed to his flight. It was now plainly to be seen that be would escapeEvery inch of steam was put on to tbe boat. She nearly buried herself under the water, but still tbe monster gained upon her.

Tbe toughest skinned animais have vulnerable points. Chief of Police B—k had been watctaing carefully. He saw bis mark directly under a huge fin. He took deliberate aim and fired. A yell from tbe monster, before which the first wu but an infant's cry, went up to 'heaven. Again tbe red blood spurted, and tbe monster stopped still He seemed to be deliberating what to do, but only for an instant. Fortunately it was that the engineer of the boat shut off the steam a3 he did, with' out waiting lor an order. The boat wa* near enough to such a thing.

W read of the death agonies of the lion, tbe tiger, tbe elephant, and the buffalo. Those who did not see the agony of tbe great aquatic monster know nothing of such things. He gave utterance to beart piercing shrieks. He moaned and cried and shrieked by turns—first a tone of sad* nets and grief, and then of rage. It wa& tbrillingly sublime but patent to all, but that he determined to die game. Then be raved and tore. His whole frame trem« bled beneath his rage. His jaws opened and closed with a sound like a hammer on the forge, and his tail lashed the water until it boiled. His single eye, large and black appeured to emit sparks. He rueheu madly at the boat, but it by dexterous management was kept out of his way. In ten minutes the death struggle came. There was one move—a jerk— the body straighthned out to its full length there was a gasp, and the great sea monster was dead.

Amid feelings of sublime awe the Davidson steamed up alongside. Who can imagine the feeling of those on board as they looked upon their conquest

It was at first proposed to tow the mon» ster into the harbir, but Chief of police B—k said tbat purification would soon set in and tbo party would be prosecuted sor committing a nuisance They could all see tbat the people must take their word for the details. Each man secured a scale from the monster, and he was towed out until cle«r of the South Point, when be was allowed to drift on his way down tbe lake.

White Pine Compouud

I» now offered to the ifflictrd througbout tliecou try, after having be proved by tbo test of elevon yoers, in the Now Knglaud States, where its merits c.ave become a well known as the tree trom which, iu part, it derives its virtues.

The White Pine Compound Cures Soro Throat, Coldb, Coughs, Diphtheria, Bronchitis, Spitting of Blood, and

Pulmonary Affections generally. Il is a remarkable Remedy for Kidney Complaints, Diabetes,

Difficulty of Voiding Urine, Bleeding from the Ridnevs and Bladder, Gravel and other complaints.

The White Pine Compound.

•'It was early in tbe spring of 1855 tbat thi Compound was originated. A member of my faml, ly waa ufflictcd witu an irrita lon of the throat* attended with a disagreeable cough, I bad for some months previ .us thought tbat a operation having for its basis the inside bark of white pine might be go compounded as to be very useful in diseases of tuethroat and luu«s. To test tbe value of it In the case alluded to, 1 compounded small qoao* ty nf the medicine that 1 had been planning, uu' gave it oonful dosts. The result was exceedingly gratifying- Within two days theirritat'on of the tlirmt was P-moved, the cough subsided and a speedy cure was etfested. Soon after this 1 sent some to a lady in Londonderry, N. U., who bad beon suffering for some weeks from a bad cough, otoasioued bjr a sodden oold, and bad riilee-' uiu^us streaked with blood. She soon found rolii-fi and sent for more. She to about ten cuiicoi of it, and got well. J. B. Claike. Ksq editor of the Manchester Dally Mirror, made a trial of the same preparation in the case of a so vere cold, aud was cured immediately. H. was so biebly pleased wiib the results, and so confident in sno-oss attending its sales, ir placed before tbe oub'ic, that he finally persuaded me to give it a name and send it abioad to benefit tbe sutTerlug Iu No'veuiber, 1865, I first advertised It under the name of White Pine Compound. In two years from that time there had been wholesaled In Manchester alon-One Hundred Dollars wcrth, where it took the lead of all the cough remedies In tbe market aud it still maintains that position. Theie is gi.od reasons for ail this it is very soothing and healing iu its nature, is warming to the stomach, »nd pleasant withal to the taste, and isexoeeding.

''"As^re- edy for kidney oomplaints tbe White Pine Comprfind stands unrivaled. It was o. initiated foi that purpose, but a person In using It tor a con was not only cured of the congb, but was also cured of a kidn.y difflc ltv of ten vears standing. Sinoe that accidental disuivery many tbonsaads have nsed It for the same complaint, and have besa completely oured.

Tho above was written by Dr. Poland, in I860 Sins, then, sin Manchester, ihe White PtneCompound has taken the lead of all Cough_BMMdl«e,
