Republican

Lope to

convention.

The Republican County Convention i» to assemble at the Old Court House, OD Saturday next, to put in Domination candidates for Recorder and County Coram* •loners. The various townships of the COUNTY, and wards of the city have already cboeen FIVE delegates each. The delegates selected are good men and such as are calculated to make judicious nominations. They will doubtless, during the preaent week, canvass the claims of the various aspirants for nomination and will make such selections as will represent the majority of Kepublican voters. We anticipate harmony and good judgment on the part of the convention, judging from the knowledge we have of the persons who have been selected as delegates. We have no

personal choice

among the candi

dates, and no individual nominations to advocate. WE shall support the nominees of the convention heartily and ear. neatly. We feel sure that the convention will make the best selections among those seeking nomination all things consid ered, and feel willing to abide its judgment. The nominations to be made on Saturday are important as a matter of party organization The offices to be filled at the next election are not very lucrative or important in themselves but become of interest IT Republicans as a PARI/ from tho fact that ttiey are entitled to them by reason of having a fair working majority in the county. Nothing except a disagreement among Republicans can give any county or city office to

THE Democrats. XBE^

cannut succeed in electing one of their nominees without disaffection iu Republi can ranks. The disagreements which existed in our party at the late city election wo believe are settled and forgotten and have reason to think that the nominations to be made on Saturday next will call ut the emire Republican strength. WC

see a large and enthusiastic

meeting on next Saturday and ask our frieiida troin the various townships to turn out in as large numbers as possible, and have their faith iu the success of the Union party brightened and strengthened. Let us have a large and harmonious convention—make good nominations and then go to work earnestly and elect our men.

A MODERN SPANISH BULL FIGHT.

A

New

or

the Event.

Mr. Beacb. of the JNew York Sun, now ono of the Quaker City excursionists, writes of a bull fight:

I have nU the heart to toll you in wbat part of these dominions it is that I have witnessed, and propose to sketch for your benefit, the impression made by what will undoubtedly beoorao one of the historic bull fight# of- tho age. My friends are fully awaro that I would itttond no siich brutal exhibition lor love of blood or tlin gratification of a savago disposition. That I should ever willingly attend another eeoiiis absolutely impossible and yet, now that it is over, I am glad tbat 1 went But to the fight.

The I^IUZH de L09 Tauros is a circular structure, with an external wall of stone, or rubble 25 or 30 feet high, from the top of which ranges of boxos and seats slope down inside to the ground, the line of descent averaging nbout35 degrees. Inside of these ranges of seats is a passage-way two feet wide, and this is separated from the right by a stout plank fence five feet high. On the inside of tho fence, and couple of feet from the ground, is a continuous step, the use of which will appear as I proceed. At half a dozen places narrow passages aro cut through this fenco, and these passages are both bidden and protected from bull-ish vagaries by a single length of fence—some two feet— of the same hight as the other. On the east ur sunny side of the ring, and within a shaded box or tent, and over a pair of doors, whence were to appear the bulls, was seated the master of the ceremonies, while on tho opposite or shady side appeared tho highly-decorated royal pavilion.

On this occasion the royal pavilion was occupied by those high in authority as representatives of the queen, and the ad joining box was hold by one of the owners of the bulls to be fought. That he was both known and a favorite became evident from th" applause which greeted his appenrance. Tue ranges of seats and

While the bull's horns penetrated the horse the rider's spear entered the bull's body far enough to excite him to an in tense fury. Then, when the beast withdrew for a freeb attack, he spurred the now wounded horse, beyond his re»ch. Meanwhile the banderillos bad eriterei the ring, and while the picador moved away his horse's legs reddened with the falling blooi, drew the now ferocious an mat's attention by waiving in his face their cloaks As he darted upon them they lightly jumped aside, letting him strike only on the cloak as he pawed.— When the

Braderillos in parti-col-ored tights and red cloaks, or substitutes thorefor, swung over the arm and matadors, stilJ more gaily dressed, and bearing tcarlet cloaks, with da-k-coiored linings. This lighting and teasing corps and their attendants were followed by a couple of three abreast teams of harnessed horses. These horses were fairly cov ered with tinsel and sieigh-bells, and behind them trailed a rope, of the use of which we cannot be doubtful,—or will not be when my history is finished.

While they

But the fellow-fighters of the latter were ever watchful, and, on the appearance of danger to their comrade, would promptly distract the animal's attention by arrow or sword thruaU. or waiving in his face the hated colors. A Twin Trick.

A farmer in the State of Connecticut has a pair of twin daughters. They both attended the same scnool, and not long since ono of them, who is iatner averse to studying, was called up by tho teacher to recite a lesson in geography, which she had learned very impe.i'eetly—in fact she could not get on at all. The teacher was getting out of patience, when he was called to another part of the room lor a moment. No sooner was his back turned, than tho twin sister sprang to tho floor, unobserved, and pushed tbo delinquent pupil to her seat.* The teacher returned and proceeded with his qu.si.ions, which were answered with N OUGREE of promptness and accuracy Which, at the close, drew from him a lew words of ooqtt mendation. Thej.ke, however, WAS dls-5 covered next day, but tho teacher uinugkt it too good and successful to give OCOUSIOV for offense.
