our people are aware that KEN

tucky recently elected eight called) to repreient her in tho ieaera House of BepreeenUrtive#, and that—one of these having committed suicide-bat one of the eeven survivors has as yet been permitted to take his seat, pending an investigation of their right to seats by the standing Committee on Elections. Yet, upjto this hour, no Democratic journal has apprised its readers that this exclusion has any „other foundation or reason than the fact that the Kentucky claimants are Democrats—therefore obnoxious to the overwhelming majority of either House. How can they fairly judge who are kept in ignoraace of the facts

The Unionists of Kentucky affirm that the party calling itself Democratic in their State is entirely inspired and controlled by the rebel element—that its eight candidates for Congress were all partisan of the rebellion, and that several of them owe their election to the votes of paioled prisoners from the surrendered armies Lee, Jotonson and Kirby Smith. Bay, you will, that this matters not, that these aie just as good voters as any others is not naked justice that all should be aware of the grounds whereon their admission to seats is resisted

The Commonwealth (Frankfort) has the following: "We learn that one of the rebel Demo cratic candidates for .Representative ii this county, in one of his speeches recently, accused his Coiibervativo competitor with buving lurniebtd the United Eiiateo Government with horses to put down the rebellion. The accused party repueu that ho had a contract to furmeh horse*to the Uovernment that lio had su lui nished them but that he had so urruugcu the place and time of their delivery as to secure their capture by John Morgan, who was then on a raid in Kentucky

This, you may say, is a loyalist's story which may be unfounded or exaggerated Suppose, then, you try your teeth or this, from The True Kentuckian, a "Dem ocratic" organ

A CARD.

As 1 am informed through reliable sources that it is reported in this community tha 11 was with the Federal army during the war, I wish to pin the lie to it, by making a public denial through your paper for I was not associated with that army in any capacity during tho war, and defy any one to prove the contrary. 1 am am only anxious to de ny the reports, because I know that they were promulgated by some maliciously disposed person or persons, with a view of prejudicing the public against me. (Dr.)

The Commissioner has directed the Surveyor General to respect the reservation by causing the lines of the public surveys to be closed upon the limits of the same as surveyed by order of the War Depart ment in 1859, embracing an area of ten square miles, and the islands in the Platte River for fifteen miles above and below the fort. ---<>---

AN ex-Rebel "who has been used to hate the Yankees with all his vim" writes that "as far as little Phil. Sheridan and all the balance of the mongrel crew are concerned, they may inclose themselves in all the armor a Loyal Congress will give; but when such men as I get ready to strike them, we won't hit them in a theater, but will strike them down were they in a church." There is no doubt that this man speaks for no insignificant class; yet Sheridan, for removing its leaders from office, is bullied and abused by the whole Copperhead press. ---<>---

Sherman and his famit havo arrived for tbe purpose of visiting the World's Fair. This iB the second timo the Geueral has favored Paris with a visit since the American war. He is fifty years of age, and lookB as young and fresh as ever." When this was written Gen Sherman was in the far West—where he is still—looking alter the Indians.

Mr. M. B. Centrcvillo, Kentucky.

We believo Dr. Talbott is the son of former Democratic member of Con gress.

We hope to see the day when all shall exercise the Right of Suffrage; yet we cannot realize that any hardship is involved in a deliberate scrutiny by the House of the influences whereby the choice of the delegation just returned was effected. Rely on it, were that House Democratic, the new delegation from Tennessee would have a hard road to travel. ---<>---

GKEAT SALT I*AJ» -GOT,July 19. A week or two back, paragraphs were going the rounds of the press, East and Westi to this effect that a split among the Mormons in Utah had occurred, or was imminent, And that Brigham Young had severed from the Mormon Church three of the Twelve Apostles—Orson Pratt, Orson Hyde and Amaaa Lyman. These paragraphs grew out of the statements made by the Union Vedette, the "©entile" newspaper of this city, in this instance it is to be apprehended that tbe Vedette, in its eagerness to make a point against the Mormons, rather stretched the facts, or at. least made tbem as sensational as possible. I have heard nothing to lead me to suppose that Orson iijde or Orcon Pratt is not in "full fellowship'1 with

Brlgbam and the Mormon church. There ii. some reason to think that Amasa Lyman is not held in such esteem. All the above three gentlemen are thinking men, and each entertains or has entertained doctrines which Brigham contends are neretical. Amasa, as be is familiarly called here, docs not beiieve in the atonement of Jusus Christ, which Brigham asserts is a fundamental principle of Mormonism. Amasa also teaches tbe doctrine to others, and has done so up to a late date, although a recantation of his views in that particular, with hU name at the foolof tne document, was published a few months ago in tbe Deseret Newg. HaiiCe it appears that Brigham think? Amasa should be tied up a little, and the people warned not to give heed to his doctrine, all which has been done.

Orson Pratt and Orson Hyde, so far as I nave heard, do not now te&ch doctnues obnoxious to Brigham and the Murmoi. church at large. Consequently, 1 see no reason to conclude that any church action has been taken against tftem by Brigham, nor have 1 heard that such has been the case of late. 1 have not heard anything of a split in the Mormon church in cousequence -jf the non-orthodox doc.rinos of tbe three gentlemen named. Lt ts possible that some of the Mormons beiiuve in thubi ri c.rinea, but if so the numbsr is compar lively few, as thero is no btir wnatever concerning the matter. 1 not thibR that either of the three would have nay great influence as a religious leader in opposition to Brigham Young, even were such opposition contemplated, or au actual fact.

There has been considerable excitement of late in this city and in most of the Territory over the late discovery of gold diggings two hundred miles or east of thiB place. The locality of these new mines is a fow miles northeast of the old overland route through the South Pass, consequently it is on the Atlantic elopo. The prospects are reputedly rich. It has been statod that iifteen hundred people have gone from these valleys to the nuw Eldofado, but that is probably itn exaggeration, though many persons certainly have gone, and some rich specimens oi quartz Lave been brought in. The Montana mining laws have been adopted in th£ new gold fields, which laws, it Was wont to bo familiarly stated, recognized claims fr "summit to summit." Hence the claims at Strawberry, the name given the new diggings, are of liberal extent.

Tho chief reason why to many people rushed from this territory to these mints was that it was rumored that Bnghum had advised such a movement, being contrary to tho advicc given by him in all previous gold digging excitements. However, lust oUuday, he pubiiciy declared that he had not done anything of the kind, nor had he sunt anybody to ma~ke claims f"r himself, as was reported. Ho stuck to his own old doctrine—that these men who staid at home and raised grain and built houses would bo able to buy out those who wont to. hunt gold. He had only advi&ud one mar. to go, and ho had been prespecting unsuccessfully for a long time, and now thought he had got tho big thing at last.

However valuable tbe new fields may prove for gold producing, there is one thi^g certain, that locality is anything but inviting as a place of residence, lt is blessed with none but cold nights, with a very short summer, and a long winter of intense cold, with heavy snows. Few people would like to make their homes at the South Pass, though on Green river, fifty miles or so west, farms have been maie and grain and potatoes raited. But .-an too number of people who would think oi the attractions of a home on the ridge dividing the waters of the two slopes could not be great.

Sheridan. [From the New Yori Tribune.

The country sues so much that is grand in tbe character of Sheridan, tnitt it wil not tamely submit to his degradation Hero is a man who proved himself in war to be not only thu most brilliant of all our generals, but according to General Grant himseli,,if we may credit twenty narrulivei, one of the greatest captains Jt modern times. In peace he has been as great as in war. When President John-son-endeavored to coax him to sustain his licy by equivocating in reference to tho iJew Orleans iots, he startled the country by spurniug the temptation, and pronouncing the riot to be a massacre worse •than Fort Pillow. This showed tin intropid honesty of the man. and tbe possession of a virtue that rose above an influence to which even Grant yielded when, in tho face of the infamy of that massacre, ho ol lowed himself to bo carried around the country in tho President's train—while tho President himself defonded tho riot and denounced its innocent victims.— There wore, no doubt, good reasons to Goneral Grant's negative acquiescence in that celebrated trip, and we a.u coiitem with them. But wnile tho name of Gram was used to sustain the policy of thu President, and atone for his deeds, the uaieof Sheridan was the oriflame around which the country rallied when it lought ihe battle of Congress and routed the forces of the Copperhead Johnson party.

Tho name of Sheridan is an oriflamme to-day. Whatever statesman or soldier we may nominate, his name and deeds will be among the mosi glorious elements of our canvass. The country approves of his course, and, so long as ho possesses public confidence, will watch him with eager, jealous oyes, and will not tamely submit to his sacrifice.

rag pickers of Paris are very nu

A iew^years since, a French lady and her husband wore stirred up by some earnest words of an English clergyman on lw hulf of tbeso poor ignorent creaturw. They soon found their way to the cite act as it is called a miserable collection of hovels, outsido the fortifications ol Paris, where tho rag pickers live end, by much effort, succeeded in interesting a few children iu being taught to read. They began their schjol in tne open air, but after a while hired one of the houses. This was soon crowded, and a room in a neighboring house was hired to be, in its turn, crowded. Two or three rooms were added and now as many as ninety women and girls are gathered there from day to day to be taugbt to read, to sew, and generally be well informed and well behaved Christians.

Fagnani, who is the oracle of the Court of Bome, in his famous commentaries on the Decretals, teaches as thfrr3wtfme-«f-the Roman Curia concerning the Pope:

The Pope may makfe iagtf adi fiosntb' tione for all tbe worldbeCiusfefliS py#dr is unlimited. The Pope has poWer over All men, oven over infidels,' (thitfe to say, Jews, Turks, and heathens.) Pope judges all men, and can onfpbe judged by councils nay, were the whole world to pronounce in soy particular against tbe Pope, it would be right to yubmit to his judgment against the whole worl£. It is not lawful for any one to discuss the actions of a Pope. Everything that he does is done by divine authority. The Pope does not hold the place of a rnero mortal, but of the true God. The Pope may, by himself alone, determine tbe symbols of faith. Tho decisions of Fathers, even if supported by Holy Scripturea, have much less weight than the decisions of tbe Pope. Even if he wished he could not submit himself to a council, because God alone could make a mortal greater than tbe Pope. The Pope is not subject to the decisions of his predecessors—not even to that of the apostles for there is no power that limits the power of the keys, not even the power of St. Peter and St. Paul, there being no superiority among equals. The Pope may dispense with the observsnce of the Divine "laws and the Gospel precepts. It would be heresy to beiieve that the Pope could err iu his decisions as to faith or the sacrament It wou be sac i^i jLs to douLi whevVer or no he could change ibe lust will of the dying, and be who should deny his sovereign power would not be a Christian. The Pope as a man might err in matters of laith, but as Pope he could not do so. The Pope is tbe administrator, tbe dispenser, the true patron of ail the ecclesiastical possessions in the world, and therefore he may freely use them as his own. The Pope may grant every species of dispensation, with the exception of one—to marry one's mother. Tbe Pope may depose -magistrates and p.inces, and free their subjects from their obligations to loyalty. Nevertheless, the king or prince thus deposed may not iuwiullj be driven away,"or slain, except by those commissioned by the Pope. Tbe.

Pcpe is king of kings, and ruler of rulers be is the prince of bishops, the judge ol all men. In virtue of his absolute power, he can change tho nature of things, and make a thing out of nought he can create a law where before there was none he is all, and above all he can make square things to be round, and make black to be white, and white to be black.

The Lake Monster Seen lu Lake Outari°. The Clyde (N. Y.) Times upon the au thority of credible witnesses, reports that a "lake monster" had been seen in Lake Ontario. Either it must be the same creature that was seen a short time ago between Chicago and Milwaukee and after ivurd near Chicago or else tho latter was its mate. The Clyde paper says:

Wo have received from Mr. G. W. Smith, of Huron, tho following account of tho great '-Unknown of Ontario." On Friday last, Mr. H. Moeker and A. Abbott, of North Hurou, wero guing out upon the lake for tho purpose ol setting a gill not, and arrived at the bar about 2 r. M. There was no breeze, and the water was perfectly smooth., At a short distance out in the lake they saw sotueihing unknown moving slowly uloog in a northwesterly direction. They l«it their boat and ran up the bluff near by, and from that elevation they a good view, of the object. There were 8omei-30 or 40 feet of tho monster visible.

With an almost unknown bravery they determined to have a nearer view, of his snakeship they accordingly cleared their bwat of all useless freigi-t, aud started out to meet the monster in his own element. They rowed to within fifty rods and rest ed upon their oars. They saw that the animal was of a copper color and bunches upon his back about the sizo of a halfbarrel. While looking at this strange unknown, he suddenly raised his head from the water to a hight of several leet and gave a roar, which they compared to distant thunder, and dashed toward their boat with frightful rapidity. With no desire to beoome food for the monster, they iaid to their oars, and pulled for the land, whicti was not far distant By almost superhuman exertions they succeeded in reaching tho shore in safety. Messrs MeeKer and Abbott are ready at any time to swear to the truth of the above.
