HEAVY SWINDLING1 OPEBATIOiY.
A well-tnown Pork Packer raises $20,000 on frauduleut merchandise —Arrest of the accused.
From tho Vilwaukto Sentnol, August T. It is seldom tbat we are called upon to recordian:iDSlance of bad faith among our btisiceBB men, and it gives us pain at this tirue to note tbe facts in a case tbat has just come under our notice.
For some years Mr. Ifidward White has been engaged in the pork packing and commission business in this city, and has always enjoyed the reputation of being an honorable business man. Having been regarded us sach, he has been so treated by our merchants generally About the close of the packing season, last spring, Mr. White sold what purported to be a quantity of pork and lard valued—at the then market prices—at $20000', to Ii. J. Higby, Esq., taking in pay* meat thereiur receipts for the merchant dlse. Theso receipts are considered among our businesi men as good as greonbacks, anrtour business men are in the babit of paying cash tor tbom. These receipts have all been disposed of at various times, and themonoy raised 6n them by Mr White.
During all this time no fraud was suspected, and the pork and lard passed from hand to hand. Tes'erday Mr. O. J. Hale advancedjsomo 6,000, or thereabouts, on somo of these receipts, and a quantity of the so sailed lord came into .tho hauds of Messrs. .Plankinton & Armour. Aa this was being unloaded, Mr, Plankinton remarked tbat t^e barrels woro wonderful* ly free from leakage, with the thermometer ninety-six degrees in the shade, and calling for an auger tapped the barrels. InsteadJJof coming to the lard he ascertained that the barrels were filled with sand and nothing more. This develop* inent led to further investigation, and a number of barrels of pork, which had been purchased from the same party, were examined, and also found to be filled with sand. Other parties who held pork and lard purchased from the same house were informed of these facts, and an investigation led to the development of the same state of facts in regard to it. It was apparent to all that a heavy swindle had been perpetrated, and the police were at once informed uf the affair. Last evoning Mr. White, on his return from the picnic, was arrested and lodged in jail to await an examination.
Tho principal losers by the transaction are, we undjrstand, Messrs. Plankinton & Armour, O. J. Hale, L. J. Higby. W. M. Brigham & Co., and Lay ton & Oo. Wo have been unable to ascertain the precise losses of ouch of the parties.
These are the facts of the case as near as we can ascertain them at present. The party who is accused does not deny his guilt, nor does he offer any excuse. Time may develop furtnorfaots in the case, although there seems to bo no doubt of his guilt.
Josh BUUngs on Gongs.
Josh Billings relateth his first experience with tho gong thusly. 1 novor can oradicate holl from my memory tho sound ov the furst gong 1 evor herd. I was sotting on tbo front step ov a tavern iu tho sitty ov Buffalo, pensivoly smokin. The sun was goin to bed, and the hovins for an hour was blushin at the performance. Tho Ery canal, with its golden water*, was on its way to A bany, ai\d was perusin the fine botes flolin ii, an ihinkin ov Italy (wher I uso to liv) and her gondeleri and gall us wimmin. My entire sole was, as it wur, in a swet. I .wanted to clime I felt grate, I actually grew. There aro thiiigs in this life tu tig tube trifieJi with there are times when a man breaks luce irom bisaelt, when ho ecus sperrets, when he can almost, tuch the mune, And feels as thn bo Cud fill both hands with the stars ov hevin, aud almost sware he was a bank president. That's what ailed me.
But the corso of tru luv never did run smooth (this is Shakspere's opinion too.) Just as I was duin my best—dummer, dummer, spat bang, beller, crash, roar, ram, dummer, dummer, whang, rip, rare, rally, dummer, dummer, dum—with a t-emenjus jump I struck the center ov the sidewalk, with another I cleared the guU tor, and with another I stoid in the midd.o of the 8tn#H snoring like an Indian pony at a band of music. I gazed in wild despair at the tavern stand, mi hart swelling up as big as a outdoor oven, mi teeth was as luce as a String of bedes. 1 thot all ov the crockery in the tavern had fell down. I thot ov fenomenons, I thot ov (tabriel and his horn I was j«st on the pint ov thinken ov somethin else when iho landlord oum out on the iront stupe ov the tavern, holdin by a string tho bottum iv a old brass kettle. He cawled me gen'.ly with his band. I went slola and slola up to him he cammed my fears, he said it was a gong, I saw the cussed thing, he said supper was ready, and asked me ef 1 wud hav black or green tea, and I sed I wad.

While Pine Compound
Is now oflered to the afflicted throughout tliecour.try, after having be proved by the test of eleven I ynsrs, la the Mew Kngland States, where Its merits have become a- well known as the tree irom which, in part, it derives its vlrtnes.
The While Pine Compound Cares Sore Throat, Colds, Coughs, Diphtheria, Bronchitis, Spitting of Biood, and
Pulmonary Affections generally. It is a remarkable Remedy for Kidney Complaints, Diabetes,
Difficulty of Voiding Urine, Bleeding from the Kidneys and Bladder, Gravel ana other complaints.
The White Pine Compound.
•'It was early In the spring of ISM that thlCompound was originated. A member of my faml, ly was afflioted wltU an Irritation of the throats attended with a disagreeable congh, I had for some months previous thought that a preparation having for its basis tho InsTds bark of white pins might be so oompounded as to be very useful in diseases of the throat and lan^s. To test the valneofit in the oase alluded to, I oompounded a small quantity of the medicine that I had been planning, aua gave it oonfnl dost*. Tbe rexult was szcewlingly gratifying. Within two days ths irritation of ths threat was removed, the congh subsided and a spoedy cure was effoewd. Soon after this I sent somo to a lady in Londonderry, N. H., who had been snflering for some weeks from a bad congh, occasioned by a sudden cold, and had raised mnens streaked with blood. She soon tound relleff and sent for more. She to about ten onncei of it, and apt well. J. B. Clatke, Xsq editor of the Manchester Daily Mirror, made a trial of the same preparation in the oase of a severe cold, and was cured immediately, lie was so highly pleased with tbe results, and *o confident I In suocse* attending its sales, if placed before the public, that he finally persuaded me to give it a name, and tend it abroad to benefit the suifiirliig
In November, 1666,1 first advsrtised It under the I name of Whito Pine Compound. In two years from that time there had been wholesaled in ManI ohelter alone One Hundred Dollars wcrtb, where it took the lead of all the cough remediee lu the market, and it still maintains that position. Tbsts is good reasons for all this it Is very *00thing aud healing in Its natnre, is warming to tbe stomach, and pleasant withal to the taste, and is exceedingly cheap. -1 "As a romedy for kidney complaints th* white
Pl&e Compound stands nnrivalod. It was nt originated for tbat purpose, but a person in using It for a oou was not only eared of th* congh, bat was also on red of a kidney difflc lty of ton years standing. Since tb*t accidental discovery many tbonsaade have need It for the eame conplaint, and have been oompletely cured."
The above was written by Dr. Poland, in I860.— Since then, its in Mancheeter. the White Pics Compound has taken the lead of all Cough Remediee, as well as proparations'for the cure

Tbe editor of tho Manchester Daily and Weekly Mirror, In the leader of the Daily, thus write* ol the Compound: "The Whlto Pine Compound it advertised at much lenvth in our columns, and we are happy to learn that the demand for It is in* cress ng beyond all previo expectations It It tbe very bset medicine for coughs and colds we I knnwof, and no family that has oure nseditwil

Wo speak from onr own knowledge It is sure to kill a cold, and pleasant as it it sure The greatest Inventions oome by accident, and it is singular that tbe White Pins Compound made for coughs and colds shonld prove to be tbe greatest remedy for kidney difficulties known.— But so it i*. We cannot doubt it, so many testimonials corns to us from well known men. Besides, the character of Dr. Poland is such that we know that he will not countenance what is wrong. For years a Baptist clergyman, studying modiolus find remedies for bis ailments, with a delicate, consumptive look, stnndlng with one foot upon tho grate, he made tbe disoovery which has saved himself, aad oalled outfrom others the ttwagest testimonials possible. Ws bare known ir. Poland for ye its, aud never kaew a mure conscientions, honest, upright man, and are glad to state that we believe whatever he says about bis White Pins Compound.
