How Ihcy Make! Cannon—Krupp's Foundry at Berlin. The Berlin correspondent of the Bostoa Post writas as follows of the great foundry ot Krupp
Krupp's works nowcovor upward of 500 acres, cotisurae dttily 15 000 cwi. coal, anrl the etoam generu'ed in 120 boiler«— are lighted by 7,00 gaslights, and employ, as already mentioned, upwards of 8 000 men and boys who draw an annual ray of 2,500.000 thai erg, and besides enj many other advantages. We ought to mention ht-re that, in order to stimulate well drilled Workmen for their own beni-fit a fund hne been created, to which each workman has to contribute l-60th to l30th of his puy, from which fund he obtained rt'.ie! ia case of sickness and a decent pension in his old ago. Mr. Krupp himself contributes to this fund a sum equal to one-half of that paM in by the workmen Prom this fund oach workman, after serving for twenty-five years, receives a decent pension—a species of beneVolonie and justice, of which but too many employers have hardly a conception and which even with us is confined to gov rnment service only. "Workmen who are injured while at their work reeeive full pay during their disability—and if otherwiso taken tick, are suitable provio ded with uiodioiues and comforts and, lastly, this fund also furnishes the funeral expenses.
Besides tho above mentioned, Krupp's workmen enjoy many other advantages. In order to supply them regularly with good and cheap bread, Mr. Krupp caused special bakeries to.be erocted,' for which h.t b-ays tho flour in large quantities from Ku#aia
The iron ore for thi-enormous demand taken partly from Ki upp's own mines in NacsaU, near Uoblenz, partly purchased. These mines yield thu well, known specular iron.
The foundry is an enormous building, with furnaces enough melt at one time, 1,200 crucibles, all the iron and steel required for casts of ibe largest size. In each furnace there is room for nearly ten cruciMes, which rest on movable iron bars that Can easily bo taken out. Ibe beat in these furnaces rises to such a degree that the best Scotch firebrick, with which they are lined and in fuel the very crucibles themselves, yften jne}t$ the latter, therefore are never used more than onco. In order to get the contents of the different cruoibles into ©fie reservoir,' and thence Ull tbe mould placed under the same, tbe Iworkmen a-e d.vided into squads, and oboy orders given with military precision. At the right .moment tho commanding engineer, ttuiunod i.t the resurvoir, give* order, which is at oj)Ce and ioudly repoa
foreman of tbe sovera! divieior.s.
Immediately lume of tho workmen
In this way he proceeds until all the crucibles are emptied. Tho cast is then given a bufficient time to bccome solid and to cool olf so as to be taken from tho mould. It is then surrounded with hot ashes and kept in a red hot glow until ready ior forging. As this can only bo dono in cool weather, tlio largest pieces often remain two or three months in their hot beds, whose coverings, the hot ashes' being incessantly ronewed, preserve the necessary temperature. Nothing can be more picturesque or more uomnniaeal than tho Ufa and tbe work at s^ch a krge casting. RiunJ about on all sides tne fWy furoai ., 1 rem which innumerable crowds of workmen with groat erity _nd seeming ea^e druw form thu iargH red bot crucibles with lh»ir contents of molten metal,, in order to empty them iut-"» the troughs, untu the apparently iiisatiabl'i mol-1 is hll»d at last fnis being loin*, not wni'r. quenily with tho th. riraouicter at 20 25 dogrces R. In the shadej in tho open air, whila at the same tioio in the interior of tbe building every furnaco and every one of tue thousand and m.ire crucibles* becomes a burning sun, is no wor.d*r, therefore, that some of them occasionally faint away

A stiH loss us, of 15 inch calibre also foe government, and throwing a 909 ball, is exhibited at the preat Faritaxpo* sition. Oae4f the cildf attractiooaUt Krupp's machine sh'ip aria tbe ttisBT hammers, weighing from one cwt. a| to 1,000 cwt. The largest one, has alall 1" ten feet, and cost 700,000 •thalers^ tw thirds of which sum have been expended on its foundation (bed) alone, which, itdenl. has been made so solid that, although this ammer has thundered ana shaken the earth around it for five jefclS both by day and by night, shows notif& whatever *f having sunk in tbe ajjgktart degree. One might be inclined Wulak that nothing oouid resist tbe power of these blows but tbe enormous masses of red hot steel which this hammer beat into shape, receive tbe blows with so much resistance that it is only by'long perseverance and often renewed heativg tbey can be molded and mnde lo yield it all. For this reason, Mr. Krupp has determined to belabor his stubborn steel with a force three times as large, and to forge a burn tier of 2 400 cwt., with a range of 13 feet, the c.«t of which is estimated at upward of 1.300,000 tbalers.
