arrest of the wheat gamblers on

change In Chicago, last baturday, was well calculated to wake ap the ideas of all respectable gentlemen there and elsewhere who have been following this abominable practice. It is for the interests of all true business men to put down all such opera tions, not only in breadstuff^ but in every thing else. Business is business, robbery is robbery, gambling is gambling, wheth er it bo at the faro bank or in the wheat market. A11 bands should take pride in maintaining the honor of business.

Tney should frown down, and by every means put down all operations that are not business. Business comprises the growing of wheat, the buying of wheat, the transportation of wbout, the grinding of wheat and the selling of wheat, lhu Chicago gambUrs filled neither of theso conditions of legitimate business. Tiiey bought by the thousands of bushels of parties who had not, nor ever expected to have, a single bushel of the wheat. Ii was merely betting on the price of wheat six weeks or six months hence. The largest capitalists were engaged in this gambling. They combine together to sol) or buy, as the case may be, and then use their omnipotent money power to realize at tbe end of the tiire by securing either the rise or the fall in wheat as shall suit their interests. Tbey are a conspiracy against the honest dealer on the one hand or against the poor consumer on the otber.

It is time this sort of "business" was stopped. To this end there should be both public sentiment and law sufficiently rigid. -Legislators should mako a strong statute on the subject, so that any man that can be proved to have thus gambled in wheat, or anything else, can be put to bard work in tho ponitentiary fur a period sufficient to teach him what it is to make an honest living, and to serve us a wholesome moral discipline. These "business" gamblers should be held to be as vilo as those other gamblers who sleep by day1 and riot and rot by night,

Tueotyectof the wheat gamblers is to hold the market up jas lung as possible, to such a degree of tension tljat when it breaks it will come down under a panic, tnd enable them to purchaso by the million bushels at low figures, whan tbey will bull the market, and carry the price up to an enormous profit to their pockets.— In this tbey would succeed In breakiqg tho smaller doalers all over tho

gjCHICAOO, AugtUl 12, I867' THX BZGOABfl.

The number of impudent beggars in this city has increased six fold within twelve months, *nd the aggregate has become a considerable nuisance. About one b»lf of the later recnths are blind, if we are to believe the neat silver badge on tbe lappel of tbe coat. Of these badge wearers, perhaps one in ten may suffer from imperfect eyesight'the ntne can see as well as their foolish patrons and a good deal better. The latest device was exhibited on the Poatoffice steps last Saturday night. A sturdy Irishman, fain to try the new busineta, sprawled his limp limbs into every ones ^way to compel attention rendered his blindness certain by sporting a bandage four inches wide across the place where his sightless bails were supposed to roll. The more common method is to keep the lids tightly closed. Old women go about on long crutches, awkwardly feigning to be crippled, hailing as many at- meet or pass them little boys and girls are sent to the stores, shops and offices with the Luzzaron story of sickness and squalor in l«*rge families and other stereotyped methods are rapidly coming into use.— One old reprobate is just now making tbe tour of the city, attended by a troup of plump and happy infants who hang upon him like young kangaroos,-while he sits cross-legged, grinding a decayed band organ.

The profession is as yet in infancy here. Our beggars are as brazen as brass itself can be but they are uniformly so plump and so cheerful so well dressed and serene, so utterly comfortable and oontent, that one wonders at tho crcdality upon which such us they can tbrivo. Tho nuisance, however, is but the greater. The instinct which their impudence arouses is one of tbe manliest in human nature.— When suffering, though want presents itself, it is a relief to give when a mere parasite dares to parade his instincts and urge his useless greed upon tho notice of working tuen, the impulse to execute summary justice reaches its maximum.

A MELANCHOLY

ACCIDENT.

The city was shocked on Saturday by the announcement, quickly passed from mouth to mouth, that Col. Robert A. Oilmore, our Postmaster, had been drowned in the lakq. He was specially fond of boating, and owned a beautiful "shell" made to order in New York. In this he went out as usual Friday evening, braving a rather suify sea, for the wind was running a fresh breeze. He did not returnand on Saturday morning a party of men wte sent out to search the boach. Tbey went so far us Cxlu.i ct and returned to find his boat wedged in among tbo piling near the Round House—stove and capsized. All day yesterday the lake was dragged, but up to the hour of this wri ting, the corpse has not been tound. His young and beautiful wi'o lies in a most critical condition, and may not long survive him. Colonel Gilmore was a gallant soldier and for many years nas been a highly esteemed citizen.

THE INQUISITION.

Much' interest has been awakened in privato circles by the case of a young woman, a native of this Stato and the heir of a handsome property located here, who is the victim of domestic cruelty, tbo details of which curdle one's blood. Her mother being some time deceased, and her father at once malignant and intemperate^ she has been ut his mercy for several years. He was appointed guardian and trustee of her estate until she should arrive at legal majority, and has busied himseli with a series of frauds almost incredible. The majority being about to arrive, a few months sincc, ho applied to her to lend him a considerable sum of money which would immediately como into hor hands. This she declined to do, whereupon his malice took such lorm as to drive the poor girl into speechlcss insanity for months, and with helples.-, folded hands, she sat day aftor day, apparently unconscious of lifi, waiting, she knew not what. The butter to accomplish his purpose, the fiend took his ward to un, interior town of a thinly settled district in a distant Southern Sute whence she is unablo either

In this letter, Brain details with unblushing effrontry his thieving operations. Ho di«guise.'i himself and took passage out of New York on tho passenger steamer Chesapeake, together with soma oiber rebels, eimilarly disguised. Ths band«f pirates stole the vessel after killing the engineer and firing promiscuously at the unarmed officers of the steamer. His n«xt exploit was tho capture of the pas. eenger steamer Rounoko, effected in tbo some way as was tbo previous capture, Hnd her destruction by fire. Then he stole a small schooner in the Chesapeake Bay, kept her until the war was over, burned her, soon after which she came to anchor in tbe Brooklyn Penitentiary, as a pirate and murderer. Bonnets for September. Tbo bonnet question is seliins itself, and appears to bo' sett'f3^~ttSSlf perma nently in fuvor of thuamaiLbonnets. For seme time it was. considered ioevitaole that tbe "coalscuttle" or some other formidable monstrosity would reassert itselj but as the graceful and convenient little bonnet," which fits infinitely better tnan the large one ever did, began toes tabliih itself in the affections ol'its patrons the inquiry arose, why return to the large bonnets at all if we do not" Me theui why need wo have them?

A lew days ago it whs difficult to distinguish the difference between a young girt andjan old lady in tho streets, so completely did the huge bonnet obliterate all traces of youthfuii ess. The fuct, undoubtedly dealt the firls blow to tho bonnet trado by giving rise to the "round hats," which terribly abused though they were at first, have now Decomo a regular institution, and promise to last as long as bonnets themselves.

Among some advanced models of new fall bonnets is one of gray satin, which is exceedingly pretty. The shape is somewhat that of a round Funchon, and it is eucircled by a diadem, covered with'satin, and huag with jet

over eilk, and tho ornaments a wreath of Bismarck leaves, with a rose aid high on the outside. There is no face trimming to tho bi'.inets, not even a bandeau tbe front edge touching the forehead and invariably having a finish of feather fringe or pendants.

Tne rich golden brown, which is a favorite color, for dresses, is also very fashionable this season for bonnets, which is in the best taste to wear e«

nameute aro bronzj leaves, with guilt or pink roses, birds ot paradise, or bunds and fringes of tho feathers of tropical birds.

Straw bonnets for this month are charmingly and appropriately trimmed with ivy and red berries, variegated autumn loaves and the edges bound with scarlet velvet.

A decided novelty for young ladies has uppeare.l in round hats of brown straw bound with gilt metal,.$nd trimmod with giit wheat and gilt grasshoppers, upon lauves of brown voivet.—Demvreit
