»pecial says the suspension of Stan-

'ton has created some excitement and mauy speculations as to whose turn it will be next. Randall and Seward are singled out very generally. It is almost universally the impression that both of these gentlemen will sever their connection with the Administration for the ra»onliat both are disgusted with tbo President. Seward, it is said, has leanod strongly toward Stanton in all his troublos with (he President, and especially in this last one.

Prussia is nblo to show that bur income oxcoeds ber expenses, she will cxnibit to tho world a remarkable spectaclu, Tbo late war, it might have been oxpected, would bavo cost her considerable. True, she compelled Austria to pay a certain sum towards the expenses of the campaign, aod levied contributions elsewhere but it was not thought that these amounts would roach anything like the total of her expenditure. Most nations come out ot a war greatly in debt, almost hopelessly so but Prussia, after exhibiting immonse military power, show also that she possessed great resources. The fact will havo a tendency to still further elevate her prestigo in Europe. A nation which not only can maintain a great urmy and carry on a great war, but provo herself in a twelvemonth to be in the receipt of more than she spends, is to bo BO much respected by the impecunious and bankrupt nations of tbo old world as one that must not be carolcssly affronted.

time ago, Senator Doolittlo left

the United Statos for Europe, and it was given out that he went upon bueiness for the Government. The precise nature of his mission was not stated, nor is it yet publicly known, if it should be true that be really had somo mission intrusted to him. But, nevertheless, the rumor seems to bavo followed him, and being in Copenhagen, it was said that ho had come to purchase tho Island of St. Thomas. This may be true, but if so, tho Government of Denmark has felt constrained, in consequence of Mr. Doolittle's presence, to give public notico that it has no intention of selling tbo Island. This does no^ howovor, discredit Mr. Doolittlo's supposed mission. He may have gone with offers to buy, and the Danes have eoncluded that toey will not soil. If so, Mr. Sos ward lias failed again, and his prosontambassndor is no more successful than that mystorious one who was sent in the early part of tho year to the West Indies, haw ing authority to do—the people do not know exactly what. That attempt was an inglorious failure it is presumed. The messenger camo hack and roported to the State Department, which has not yet reported to tho people- Mr. Seward appears to bo the groat land speculator of the ago. His success in Russian-America has set him to hankering after territory in all sorts of places. But ho dope not seem to rnako much headway in his lato endeavors and if he does not soon make a hit, he had better retire from the real estate business altogether.

"W£ have received the report of the Department of Agriculture for the month of July. The Commissioner uses the following language in reference to tho crops: "Never bas tho department been able to report bO favorable a prospoct for uniformly good crops since the establishment of tho statistical division. While exaggerated statements have been made in influential papers, especially of the so-called failure of tho whoat crop of last year, and the importation of wheat, in the face of the fact that twelve millions of dollars' worth of breadstuff* were exported in the first four months of 1867, immense numbers or immigrants were fed, a much larger amount of wheat used for seed than usual, with a surplus still remaining over sufficient to break numerous speculators and several banks, it is gratifying to know that we have a surplus to more than make good the deficiency—not the "failure," for there never was a failure of the wheat crop in this country—of the last three crops of wheat Four States— "West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana—made but about half a crop. Ho other Stales were in that category, and Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas made a good crop. Instead of a deduction of fifty per

would at least have threatened a famine, scarcely more than & third of that deduction should be made. For three years past the product has been bat about five bnshels to each inhabitant. The crop of 1869, if the census returns are correct, was but five and a half bushels to each person The promise for the present year is about six bushels."
