SURE CUBE FOB DYSPEPSIA.—It not generally known that the most simple remedies often cure the most stubborn diseases. The saliva of the mouth is a sure cure for the worst cases of dyspepsia Apply to the palms of tbe band, and r*jb it ir« for two hours in tbe morning ami two hours at evening, with the handle of a hoe.

Where the work is well done, probably not one bug in twenty can get up to the vine, and a day or two of fasting and hot sun will kill them on the ground. Plaster is also found to ch«ck the ravages of the bugs.

Qitir A lawyor in St. Louis wai arreted the other dav on tbo charge of insanity. His conduct had been very singular for some months, though not very unusu al in his profession. He had attended court regularly for six months, and ap peared to think he had a good practice, when really he did not have a single client. Wonder if the bar of this city hastvt several members eligible to the Insane Asylum under such a ruliDg.

There are six Base Ball Clubs in

this city, rejoicing in tbe following titles. "Phoenix,'' "Resolute," "Sphynx,'' "Mo hawk." "Star" and "Hoosier." It may be proper to state there are several other clubs composed of jolly little urchins whose mammas scarcely know they're out. It may also be proper to add that the celebrated National Base Ball Club of Washington passed through the city last night, en route for St. Louis, not daring to stop and risk their reputation with either of tho above named elnbv

dence in Lost Creek township, on Friday

morning, the 19th inst., at 6 o'clock, after a lingering illness of many months, SAMtJEt W. EDMUNDS, Esq., one of the oldest

residents of this county, in the 71st year of his age. The funeral of the deceased will tuke place this, Saturday afternoon al 3 o'clock from the residence .»f hi? son, Jas. B. Edmund?, on North 5'h street, between Mulberry and Etgln strfftts, to which the friends and acquaintance* are respectfully invited to attenl witiiout further notice.

IRON VERNIRFUGE. An agricultutural journal speaks of a p?ach grower wh has lost by th* rava^et w.iran all his peach tree exoept three, and these three are the most thrifty peach trees he ever saw. The only cau^e of their salvation known is the nail? that were driven into them when they were about a year oM. Tfii-penny nails were driven in elri'u to the ground. The trec^ served in this way w^ra selected a'- random, and n.-.w they alone sur*iv- the ravages of the insects. It is supposed that the salt of iron afforded by the nail is offensive to the worm, while it is nannies- to the tree. Achomicftl writer says that tho oxidation of tho iron by the sap evolves ammonia, which, rising with tho sap, impregnates every particle of tho foliage, and is tco eere ad os or he el no at so in sects. This is certainly worth trying A writer recommends driving haU' a dozen nailsinto the trunk. Accidental experiments confirm the result. For example, one branch of an apple tree only bor« fruit, and it was io.md that around that branch had been fastened with a wire a label of the nam of th) variety, and the limb had grown over the wire, thus inclosing and uses.

This well was commenced in 1865, and first struck a vein of blue sulphur artesian water, at 955 feet. In 1866, the well was bored to a depth of 1105 feet, where white sulphur water was found, and us tho well progressed from that point, fifty feet deeper, the water contin-1 aously increased in quantity, aud is now dowing at the full capacity of the well, at the bottom, which is four undone half inches in diameter, and from the bottom is propelled upwards by a lifting force of Ave hundred pounds to the square inch, as is evinced by its propelling force neutralizing the drill and heavy weight of tbe machinery. The volume of water is estimated at one barrel per second, or 8 6, 4000 barrels per day. Tbe temperature of the water is V0J degrees, Fahrenheit, showing that earth increases in temperature one degree Fah. for every fifty-two feet of descent. The water has been analyzed by diatinguishedchemists of Cincinnati and New York, who pronounoe it one of the most perfect medical com pounds in tbe world, and predicts thatjit will surpass Blue Licks and Saratoga as a medicinal agent.

There are two sections of cast iron drive pipe of ten feet each, which have been inserted in tin- well to insure against its washing, extending to the solid rock some twelve feet below the surlace, anil is sis inches in diameter, and as stated before, four and a half inches, lienci the water does not piay up above the pipe more than twu foet without being confined. But i'ii being confined, does play a a in on iv or feet in tho air. Uv inserting in the main pipe a tube of three inches in diaint-ler, the water flows out in a stream at the top of the derrick, forty feet nbnve the surface of the earth.

Tnere has been no intermission in the flow of water sinoe it first began, but has been flowing one continuous stream i"ver since. It is a sight well worth going to see, and should the rubbish and debri3 be removed from around it, and the grounds made beautiful and inviting, it certainly would be onn of tho most desirable resorts that wo know of. We hear it rumored, howv.vor, that iho company contemplate making some improvements in the way of erecting bath houses, a hotel scd othe fixtures necessary to make it a place of comfort, pleasure and renown.

REFORM IN RIDING DRESSES.—No cos. tume more utterly unsuitable for the purpose could be devised than the present style of habit adopted by the ladies in ri ding. They could hardly get a worse habit, and it is cheering to know that they aro making endeavors to get out of it. on ii it be or ad on Atlantic slope will follow the sensible example of their sisters in Marvsville, Caii fornia We quote

They proposo to throw away the cumbersome and horse-scaring flounce and adept the Turkish stylo of habit, use tbe mnle saddle, and mount ther steeds the same as "other folks." And why not Physicians recommend invalids to take exarclso on horseback. But this, reader, under the prevailing custom of riding on side-saddle*, is }uito as much to be feared as the disease, and many of the ladies think they may as well die of consumption as broken backs or crushed brains.— The ladies have been taking this matter under serious consideration of late, and have bravely resolved to defy old fogy ism and ride as sense and comfort dictate.— We understand that a party of five or six of our most respectable citizens are preparing tbeir Turkish dresses and will oe ready to take the air on horseback the latter part of this week. We notice this style of riding is being introduced among the English ladies, and the mothers of Yankee boys should not be excelled by the matrons of old fogy England.

Across the Continent.

Th irline will extend from Sacramento, Oali* fornia, across the Sierra Nevada* to the California State line, traveriing the richest and most pooulons aectian of Califernia, and thence through the gr^nt mining regions of tha Territorits, to the vicinity oi Salt Lake City.

It forma the sole Western link of the oaly route to the Pacific, which Is adopted by CongreMf and aided by the issue of United States Bond*.

Their road is aireaoy completed, equipped and running for 91 miles from Sacramento to within 12 miles ri tbe summit of the 8 terras, and a large amount of the work of Grading, Tunnelling, &o.,

beyond that point ha been accomplished. The Firat Mortgage Bonds of this Company ford unusual inducements of Safety and Profit to

Cent and accrued interest, is Ten Per Cent, less than that of the cheapest Six Per Cent. Gold Bearing Bonds of the Government. Ettmrs. The united St$te* Government provide* nearly half the amount necessary to build the entire road, and look* mainly to a small per centatte on tbe future traffic for re-payment. FIFTH. Owing to this liberal provision, accom panied with Kxtensive Grants of Public Land* by which the Government fo*ter* thl* great national enterprise, its mccen i* rendered certain, and its financial stability is altogether independent of tbe oontingenciea Which attend ordinary llallroad enterprises SIXTH. Tbe Seourity cf its First Mortgage Bonds 1b therefore ample, and their character for safety and reliability Is equalled only by that of the obligation* of the Government iteelf. SEVENTH. The net earningaof the completed por tlon ai already largely in exceu of the inter eat obligation* which the Company will incur on twice thedlatance, and are steadily increasing, rendering the uninterrupted payment of the Interest absolutely certain. EIGHTH. At the present rate of Gold they pay nearly 8% Per Cent, per annnm. on the amount Invested.

The Bonds are issued in denominations fl,000 with semi-annual Gold Coupons attached, payable in New York, and are offered for the present at 93 per cent, and accrued interest (in currency) from January 1st.

Order* may be forwarded to u* direct or through the principal Banks and Backers in all part* of the country.

Bemittances may be made in dratt* on New Tork, or in Legal Tender Note*, National Bank Not s, or other funds current in this city, and the Bends will be forwarded to any address by Express, free of chargo. Inquiries fgr further par ticulars, by mail or otherwise, will receive punc tual attention.
