Bulletin, trom

The editor went to Mr. Lincoln's office, laid the whole matter before him and asked bis advice. Mr. Lincoln sat a momentum deep study, and then with his characteristic coolness, &aid: "Toll Shields Abe Lincoln wrote that article." The editor repaired to his office where he found Shields in waiting and when he heard the information, vow?d vengeance upon the .'/country pettifogger.'r Mr. Linooln waited the result Vrtth a good deal of anxiety, expecting a personal en* counter with shields the flrst time they met, but instead he Immediately received a challenge to fight a duel. This was un. expected to Mr. Lincoln but not doubt*, ing his ability to bring the matter to a pleasant issue, he proceeded witb|the affair. Butlwillusehis own lanquage in relating it afterwards. He said: "I thought if I should fail, aftor leading the General along as far as I could on his road of •oohor', and Shields being a small man and I very tall, with exceedingly long arms, I thought a sword would serve me as well as anything, and I chose long swords as the weapons."

Everything been arranged the parties met, and when, the final issue was about to come, Shields being perfectly incorrigible and Mr. Lincoln seeing there was no other alternative, looked Shields earnestly in the face and said: "3hields, do you want to know who wrote that article '•Did you do it said Shields "No, Mary Todd wrote it," Said Mr. Lincoln, with a smile upon his countenance.

The friends pretent burst into a roar cf laughter, joined by Mr. Lincoln. In a few moments Shields stepiped forward, gavo Mr. Lincoln his hand, and Joined in the erriment.

Thus ended Mr. Lincoln's duel. He soon hod an interview with MaryJ Todd, who bad known nothing of the affair,'related the circumstances to her, and, sought her pardon for finally disclosing her namo. Of course he was forgiven. To Shields the affair was ever afterward annoying, but to Mr. Lincoln, with his quick sense of the ridiculous and the nice appreciation of humor so characteristic to the man the whole affair was ever a laughablo one, when referred to in after vears.

The Fox, the Guar, and the carrots.

A fox and a goat were walking together along the main road. Aftor having advanced a few yafds, they saw a bag lying at the side ot the hedge,

I wonder what there may be in that bag," said the goat. '•j'H see," said tho fox and putting his mouth to the string with which the bag was tied, he bit it through in a moment. Thfn seizing the bottom of the bag with hi* teeth, he shcok it, and the most splen. did carrots rolled out. "Those are for me," said the fox, "for I opened the bag." "You shan't touch them,'' answered the goat, "else I'll batter you with my horns till your ribs crack."

The fox looked at the large horns of tho goat and showed his tosth. Tho §oat seeing the fox's teeth, thought within himself "I don't liko those sharp fellows." And the fox thought, '-I don't believe my rim would stand those horns.''

So they kept standing over tho carroU and looked at etch other, but neither had the courage to touch the spoil

After a pause the fox said: "Whafs the DM of oansUndiag here Let us see which of ua is tbe stronger. Yonder aretwo heaps of stohM. Take you one and I'll take the other he who first throws down his heap will have tho carrots." "Very well," said the goat so they went each to hit heap.

The goat placed himself on his hind legs, and knocked with his homs till the ground rebounded, but the heap kept im movable. "You don't hit bard enough,'' said the: fox.

At the time alluded to, Gen. Shields, Mr. Lincoln, and Mary Todd, the affianoed of Mr. Lincoln, were residents of ingfleld, Gen. Shields had just returned frotn tbe Mexican war. She wrote a severe and sarcastic article* accompanied by a piece of poetry, all of which was a most scathing and cut* ting rebuke to Gen.
