PARDONED.—Governor Baker has par^ doned John L. Bailey, who was convicted of manslaugbt^r, at the November term of the Dearborn Circuit Court, 1866 The pardon was granted on the grounds of his attreme deformity, declining health and the fact. that when the orime was committed Bailey was so much intoxicated that he did not know he had committed it until the lapse of several hours aftorwards.

German chemist publishes the

following simple method oF preserving small quantities of ice, which he has prac-. ticedfwlth success: Put the ice into a deep dish, cover it with a plate, and place the dish on pillow stuffed with feathers, and cover the top with another pillow carefully, and by, this menus exclude the pxternal air. Feathers are well known noncoijductoraof heat, and in consequence the ice is preserved from melting. Dr Schwartz states that he has thus preserve ed six pounds of ice for eight days. The plan is simple, and within the reach of overy household.

We learn the bottom has fallen

out of the great consolidation of railroads from the eastern cities to St. Louis. The eastern roads were "scared" into the arrangement on the representation that the combination bad control of the two roads running east and west from this point, and in turn our roads were told that the combination of the eastern roads was effected, and they were determined to fill the gap from Indianapolis to this city or Paris, "regardless of expense.'' But those Who have the management of our own model road to Indianapolis," wouldn't scare worth a cent," and when this came to the ears of the eastern companies the whole scheme fell through.

On Saturday the Ohlef En

of the Fire Department made a partial test of the stream flowiog from the Kose well. The hose was attached and carried around to the front of the Terre Haute House, where a stream was thrown up some twenty-five or thirty feet. It is thought that through tubing the water would be forced a distance of flrom four to five hundred feet from the surfaee of the earth- rX

A complete chemical analysis, in addition to what bes already been made, is in progress, and when perfected, the result will be made public. Large numbers of our people daily visit the well to drink of the water and carry it away to Use for medicinal purposes. Those who know the value of such water speak of it in the highest terms.

One of our leading citicons suggests that the city should buy this well.— Whether this would be the be*t disposK tion of it, jor whether a company should be fortned, to erect a hath house, we nre cot prepared to say. Certain it is, however, that this invaluable discovery should bo developed that the largest possible good may come of it

and partake of his excellent ice cream.

It seems these individuals got "hard dp," and wishing to raise the wind, conceived the brilliant idea of introducing a newHrticle, with the taking name of the "BuMian Sweet Potatoe -^tsed," jt&d labelled in the name of the American Agricultural Society. The parties visited Warsaw on theday of Yankee Bobinson's show, and after much gassihg about the deSciooa flavor and profitable yield, induced a great bqany"farmers to invest $2, the price of a paper, some taking three or four. SPICIDE.—Mrs Peterson, a very venerable and estimable lady, residing near Boon Grove, committed suicide on Tuesday last. In the absence of the family she bung herself with a comforter, such as is worn around the neck. Her son, with whom sbe lived, found her in the house dead, and although every effort was made to restore life, it was of no avail.—

A TALK OF HoaRoR.—We are credibly informed-that a few- days since-three little children came to an untimely death in Clay county, under the following circumstances A woman residing near Ceiter Point went to an ^adjacent creek to do tbe family washing, taking witb her three small children. The two elder ones while playing about in tbe woods were bitten by a venomous snake, and their •creams attracting the attention of the mother she hastened to their re lief, thoughtlessly |eaving the smallest child, which, during her absence, fell into the creek and was drowned. The above may be true, but after diligent inquiry we cannot learn that, any thing ot the kind has occurred at or near Center Point—or at least we cannot- find any person from that neighborhood that knows anything about. it. We guess is a "snake" story of_huge proportions.—

[Fom the New York Sunday Times, July 186T.] A MUSICAL jDScoafj^Sometime ago we animadverted-on a rnanifestly ttnfair action relative to the excfasiohW certain pianos from coropetion at H& ^aKs Exposition. From appearances, our Worst fears, we are afraid, will be realized.— The two favOrited competitors have each been given a gold medal and others of various nationalities have probably been recipients of similar complimentary testimonial. Stein sray has the fortuitous luck 'of being first recorded on the American list, but Chickering throws in the Crdn of tbe Legion of Honor to boot and claims %upremacy, while both firms promulgate their successes throughout the land. Bat —there was a "Grand Prize" for the best pianos in the world at the Exposition, and this wg are assured was awarded tcjpfoad* wood & Sons of London. It trill yefc.be some time before we can refer to the printed account of the great dutribotiott of pri2fes but should thia. unhappily prove to be the case, it *ill be a matter of national indignation that the exclusion of tbe "STSCK" pianos has tuoat probably robbed our country of the honor tf winning a grand prize in this department of art.

Mr. Kissner, of this city, has not only the pianos on hand that received the first igold medal at Pari?, but he has also the lebrated Steck that cooid not go to the

Exposition. d2t
