at the head of the gpvwrnmeilt, and G«n eralB'umarek at the bead of military affairs .Prussia will, in ao distant day, (be the raiitfg power of Europe. I repdat it enough to cause a people to ffeel prOud of their rulers, and,, doubly proud of theonielm. I bad .the pleasure of Witnessing a Grand Review,'or parjde o£ the troops of tW. portion of the kiig~dpni.lt was given in honor of. tfcte 'Emperor of "Biissia', wh6 visited JB6i&in on his return from Paris The day was cleat and beautiful, we repaired to the field, a distance of two miles and a Wlf from the city, quite early, hoping to prdcure a suitable position, but already wore assembled most of the troops, about sixty thousand in all, and thousands of civlliani, I soon, saw, unless we" could gain gome friend who would favor us

With a suitable position, ^that we would profit but little, by our i, drive. Hence, calling to a policemen, I informed him that wean Illinoian and a New Yorker—were Americans, and' had come expressly to witness tho parade, and begged him to point us to a suitable position, and at the lame tithe 1 slipped him a dollar into his hand. Tht effect was magical "blatter remarking that many were in like condi tion to ourselves,' said, in tones so loud that all around could hear, "As you are Americans, I take ispecial care to And you a good position."" He theti conducted us -tott-stand'point, where the Sing, Emperor,' Ettfpfctess,' Bismarck, fcc.,—Would halt to review the army as a whole, as they quitted the field. My American fiiends thought that truly Americans were highly favored in Prussia—of course, I fully -Bgieedlwith them.

The King is about 60 yoacs^oM, hi* hhir «iid beard ate quito white he is rather corpulent, yet he rides well and jaoves with ease. He was 6oro* Dated Sing tome seven years ago, yet, has rultid hlspeople iot. many years previous, owing to hisbrother's infirmities. Bll guljjects speak well of him, and, judging"from the kind and friendly reception be gave his troops, I should thibk that he felt proud of them. The Germans jaflfr flhe lookihg soldiers, and when their King and Gen. Bismarck lead them, they make fighting soldiers. The -Emperor of Russia is much ydung«r than the Sing, yet I should say, that from bis appearance, he is not so honored among bis robject* as is the King' of Prussia.— I should think him man of no ordinary ability however, as one could see his small qye flash when this or that thing pleased or interested him. Of the Queen, Princes Royal and others I will in a future letter speak, and will close by saying something of General Bismarck, the world hafo, he is about 38 years of age, and has all the appearance of. a true soldier.— He is not as tell as I should fancy him, yet he carries himself with grace and ele* gance. Indeed, 1 think that the General it fully^aware that he is General Bismarck' the leader of the Prussian army, and the originator of this grand and new Government. There is in the Prussian army one regiment called for the General, and it would have done you good to have seen him handle those troopB, as they passed in reviaw. Hera one- finds discipline in its fullest sense, and each and every soldier is fully prepared for the work.,

Prussia, as a Government, quite lib. eral, and really did one not now and then see royalty on the street, you would conclude thai you Wef&wfthra our own glotioos free country. ^But excuse me, 1 have already transgressed too long on your tinei Hoping yo» may. prosper and be happy, I am your obediant servant, '.^r .. form being vaguely discerned through the many thicknesses of bandages which envelopad it die coffin on which is painted the scene usually represented under similar circumstances, "The Judgment of doote^ -was pieced -not Car distant: In this scene, the soul of the defunct, (the mummy was a woman), conducted by two funeral geuii, one good, the other bad, is making obeisance before Osiris, the great judge of the subterranean regions, who is seated upon the throne, the

on bis head, tbe funeral horn on

bis chin, and the whip in his hand. In the distance her good and bad actions, symbolized by a pot of flowers and rough stone, are being weighed in a balance.— Along line of judges, with iron, faloon and jackal h^ads, await inhierarchical attitudes the result, in order to pronounce judgment.

Qter this pfl«*ing ate written the prayer of tho funeral service and the confession of the deceased, who not only does not reproach horodf• with anyrsins, but eniuaerates.tboise' whichshe has not committed "l am not guilty of murder, nor of theft, nor of adultery." Another inscription contains the gensalugy of the deceased, both paternal and maternal. We will not transcribe here tbis series of whimsical names, ending in that of

Net

the wbman, or rather lady, inclos

ed ia this box, where she ^relieved herself sure of repose, While awaiting the day when her soul and body should be reunited, and she should-enjoy supreme felicity in flesh mfrd bones, deceived hopes!

The process of unbinding the body commenced. The outside bandages of strong linen were first removed with the aid of scissors, and then a faint odos of balm, incense and aromatic drugs tilled tho room like tbe perfume of a drug'store. Having found an end among these many wrappers, the mummy was placed in an upright position, in order tbat the long, yellow strip of linen might more easily be unwound. A strangei scene cannot be Imagined than this huge rag-doll awkwardly tossing its arms in the air, while its despoilera increased at every turn the heap of "yellow linen at their feet, as one does the pairings of a fruit before reach, iog the core. Jfrom time to time the bandagee inclosed pieces of cloth resembling fringed towels, designed to. fill in the spaces or to sustain the form. The head was.passed through holes, cut in pieces of cloth, which, wereadjusted at tbe shoulder, and fell over tbe breast. A kind of veil of course India muslin, the delicate rose tint of which would have charmed an artist, was discovered after the removal of all theso obstacles. It seema to us that the roncon must have been used in tbe dyeing of tbis muslin, unless tho original red had become flesh»colored from contact with the aromatic drugs, aided by the action of time. Under this veil bandages of finer linen enveloped the body in their many entanglement. Curiosity becoming greatly excited, the mummy was made to retolve more rapidly.—

Hoffman or Edgar Poe would have made this scene the basis of one of4heir terrible histories. Just at this moment a sudden storm sent great drops of rain, like hail, against the window-panes pale streaks of lightning illuminated the old yellow skulls, and tbe grimacing contor tions of the six hundred death's heads of the anthropological museum, and the lowrumbling of thunder served as accompaniments to the waltz of "Nes Khons," daughter of Horus and of Romas, whirling in tbe impatient hands of tbe disro. bers. The mummy diminished sensibly in size, and her lank figure became more and more evident as the envelopes grew less in thickness. An immense quantity of linen wrappings encumbered the room and it was difficult to believe they had all been contained Within this box, Which did not- surpass the size of an ordinary ooffln. The neck was tbe first portion of the body which appeared disembarrassed of bandages, but it was glued up with such amass of naptha that it required the aid of Acipsors to remove it. Ail at once we saw a bright glittering through, the dark portions of %be nftre which stffli remained on the breast, and we soon brought to light a tWn leaf-of metal Cut in the form of a sacred falcon, the wing3 extended and the tail spread as a fan, like tbe eagle in beraldrys Upon tho leaf of gold, too poor a trinket to tempt tbe grave-digger, a prayer Iwas written, demanding of the guardianugeds of tombs that the heart and entrails of tbe deceased might not be too. widely separated. A beautitul microscopic gypaete of hard stone, exquisite for a chain to a watch, was attached by a thread to a collar of olue glass ieads, where hung a sort of amulet of turquoise blue enamel, in the form of a flail. Like sucr^s d'orge, in which the transparency is .governed by the crystalixation, some of the heads have beoome opaque, probably from the heat of the bitumen, which was poured upon them boiling. All this is n«thing extraordinary, however. Theee little objects are often found in tbe coffin* of the mummies and there is not a curiosity shop but what possesses more or less of these -little figures in blue pants but an unexpected and touching detail was a flower found under each arm -~-so well preserved that a botanist would no doubt have been able name it. Was it a lotus blossom or a persea?

No

one could tell us, as our company was mostly composed of savants. This incident made us all pensive. "Whose hand had placed there these poor flowers, is a last adieu, at the moment when this deeply regretted body was about to disappear forever from mortal eyes? Flowers four thousand years old 1 What a Subject for meditation I A little berry of fruit, whose species it would be difficult to name, was also found from time to time in the bandages.

Perhaps it was one of those narcotics which renders oblivious those who inhale the fragrance. On a fragment of cloth was written the name of an unknown king belonging to some dynasty equally ignored. The mommy opened at the Universal Exhibition fills avoid in history and reveals a new Pharaoh. The face still remained concealed beneath its mask of linen and bitumen, which it was difficult to remove, owing to its immense age. The scissors finally removed the last obatasle, and two large black eyes shone with a semblance, of life from between two blackened eyelids. These eyes were of Aamel, such as the ancients always put in a tttrefuRy pMpbed tn&nmy.

The effect of those two fixed staring eyes in that dead face was something star^hng. The corpse seemed to content plate the living beings before it

Digestion and Paradise. Ahl talk of blessings! What a blessing is digestion! To digestl Do you know what it means? It is to have the sun always shining, and the shade always ready for you. It is to be met with smiles, and to be greeted with kisses. It is to hear sweet sounds, to sleep with sweet dreams to be touched ever by gentle, soft, coo, hands It is to be in Paradise. Adam and five were in Paradise. Why? Their digestion was good. Ahl1 then they took liberties, ate bad fruit—things they could not digest. They what we call ruined their constitutions, destroyed their gastric juices, and then they were expelled from Paradise by un angel with a flaming sword. The angel with tbe flaming sword, which turned-two ways, was indigostion. There came a great indigestion upon the earth because the cooks were bad and they called it a deluge. Ahl I thank God because there is to be no more deK ugea—all the evils come from this. Macbeth could not sleep. It was the supper, not the murder. His wife talked and walked. It was the supper again. Mil ton had a bad digestion because he was always so cross and your Carlyle must have the worst digestion in the world, because he never says any good of anything. Ab! to digest is to be happy. Believe me, my friends, there is no other way not to be turned out of Paradise by a fiery, twohanded, turning sword.—TroUopt.

Walking.

Feet were intended for use, and yet immense numbers of sensible people seem to think walking on them is a hardshi Those who ride in carriages habitually have degenerated limbs... The muscles become attenuated in consequence of not being constantly" active. Rope-dancers, ho&9-buck-riders, and indeed all who are using their legs as they were designed to be, nkve tbem finely developed. The more they are exercised the stronger and mora syrhmetircal they become. 'But another great gain results from walking more than one rides. It brings into harmonious play the whole muscular cordage Of tbe body. A healthy condition of all the. internal organs follows^ and the secretions are nlmirably conducted by pedal exercises. It is a pleasant conditidn of eminent civilisation to ride any way, but particularly luxurious to bound off in one1# own soft-cushioned carriage bi^t there is a penalty positively following too. much comfort of that kind. Digestion becomes impaired, the legs diminish in size and the individual 'who rides when he can, and rarely walks, is soon weary when the attempt is made Longevity is tbe compensation lor free outdoor walking, without much reference to weather, when business or duty requires it. We were created for use, not altogether for ornament.
