Editors oat of Hafiwss: I From tbe 15. Y. Evening Post. OiioS a yes tbe editors of New Jersey uieei together to eat, drink and be merry. Ten years a^o they organised a State Editorial Association, for tho purposo ot combining busiueu, and pleaeai't, and the regular, meetings of this body have bien kept up' froin year to year with increasing interest. Last year the annual dinner was given at the Delaware Water Gap yej-

at Long Brunch, where nvo hundred and fifty editors and publishers and their wives were handsomely entertained by the proprietors of Ebo Continental Hotel. A tosa iu honor of the President of the United States was responded to by Mr. Georgu Wuits, of the Paterson Press, who spo'ue o.r the dignity of tho Presiden tial o&ee. Mr. Juhn Y. Foster spoke to a sentiment in honor of the "Boys in Blue.' paying a graceful tribute to the bravery of the New Jersey troops in the war, and narrating some stirring incidents the venerable Judge Naar g»ve int(treating reminiscences of tb« oarly day* ot the Press of New Jersey Mr. H. N. Conger, Secretary of State of New Jersey, was called out by a toast "to the ex-Editors," and made a witty speech Col. Hamilton was eloquent in reply to the toast to Women and ottef speakers spoke to various sentiments. '"Our Provincial Neighbors of New York'" were congratulated bv a waggish Jerseyman upon the privileges they enjoyed in communing with the metropolitan mind ana when tbe excellent dinner had been thoroughly enjoyed and the speeches vociferously applauded, the ceremonies came to an end, and tho members of the Association declared the session of the year closed. The public meeting and the dinner ware very harmonious and agreeable throughout.

The newspaper men of New Jersey have set an excellent example to their brethren in other State# by continuing these pleasant gatherings. They have proved, by ten yean of experiment, that it is possible to put out of sight the rancor of party striie, and to cultivate friendly relation and tbe effect of these annual reunions is Visible in the improved tone of the journalism of the State, as well as the substantial business advantages which are derived from a closer union of interests. Another Shaker Agitation—A iouug Girl Becomes

The Shakers Attempt to AMnct Her from the State—She is Finally Bescued by Uer Friends.

[From the Hudson (N,

J. A. young girl, aged about fifteen years, came among tbe "world's people" on Friday. last, who tells her story, which sbe supports by much evidence, and which those who boar it' fully believe. She has been among the Shakers for some few years, and as she grew up became dissatisfied with the confinement of her situation among them, and wished to leave. She dcsiTed. to follow the couple recently lett and got niarried, or that, she would not bo sent back if she succeeded in escaping. The Shakers were informed by her that she wished to leave them and join her two friond». Heuoe thoir great vigilance in watching her and to prevent tha, poswbility of escape, she was locked up in a room alone for the last week ghe was. there. This was done under pretence of compelling her to disclose what she knew of tho wishes, intentions and acu uf others. The night before ahe teft she called from her window to a person pawing, requestine him to inform certain friends to come and attempt her rescue the next morning. Those friends were infonutxi ot her wishes and her explanations that the Shakers intended to place her beyond the reach of real friends by a farced'abduction. Early Friday morning an old Shakennan and two elderly Sbakerwomea took her, against her will, in a wagon and drove her east on an untraveled road ovor a high mountain.— Thoy gave out that they were about to take her to sonio place near Springfield lo ].avo hi.-r, but «s she believed, lo carry her iiv' ii roundabout way to Niskayuna, there bt- confined, as had occurred with other- From the infortnatiou shu Lad sent to her friends, they anticipated attempted abduction »nd intercepted the party soon aft'r\th*y c'roKjed into Massachusetts. Not kxpected to survive—A Span of Hones killed Ootrlglit—Jte. [Kn»m tb« Buffalo Xxpreaa, l«t.l Ln.-t, ^Thursday afternoon, »lout 5 o'clock fa'^ large crowd had assembled at the Fair grounds oftheSpringville Union Agricultural Association, when a sharp thunderstorm suddenly came up. The rain began to tali, and the crowd sought refuge irom its effect* in tho exhibition t-heds. A flash oi lightning took place, accompanied by aloud peal of thunder, aud instantly an atvl'ul spectacle was presented.:

The lightning struck one of the shed*, which contained men, women aad lionet. About a hundred persona were paralyzed in an instant, falling on their taces, and as many as fifty were rendered insensible for five or t«n minutes, while about a dozen were quite seriously burned.. Two horses wer$ .tilled on the. spot. An old gentleman named John Gordenier and two or three 'others are not expected to recover. One woman was prostrated and deprived of her Senses, but not of her powers of locomotion she iasuactively

fonnd herself in & room &t the house. The lightning struck a post tn tha center of the shed, against which Henty' T'illou, tho landlord of the West Falk Hotel, was leaning, and to which a hon^ vas attached by a chain halter. The toofao was killed instantly, while Mr. Tillou escaped by being dazed and A singular fact mentioned in connection witn tbe strange freak oi the electric fluid is that all the persons rendered iusenftbla fell upon their faces.

A young lady named Miss Nellie Caasey, who wore a whita and black checked dress, was quite seriously injured^a^d her dress was fairly scorched, but did not take Are. Acother woman was struck on the shoulder, the fluid passing down her side, raising a perfect blister in its course. A man from Otto ^-as hit on the right side of the head,'and on his recovery the mark was found to comm^nce at the right eye, which was swelled like a puff:ball, and could be plainly, txaoed down tne neck, across tha chest and off the left arm.

The most«fearful consternation, ejdstea among the people" until it was dlecovfered how light the injuries were that had been inflicted, and the excitement was most intense. A great many attributed tlli stroke lo the attraction of a mowing machine which stood near the abed, but two boys who were sitting ou it at the time escaped uninjured, uor wa^ itie machine at all damaged, if struck.

A valuable, mare, whloh, was hitched to a pole, was knocked down, and died on Friday from the effects of the lightning. li such thunderbolts visit Fair grounds, other establishments icay expect to be visited but, thanks to the genius of the immortal Franklin, ample protection is afforded to all who avail themselves of the services of the lightning rods.

The Prise Fight for the Championship. The Cincinnati papers say that Aaron Jones is iu active training for his fight with McCoole. "A part of the daily routine of his training is to leave the Buckeye House every morning, and, accompanied by his trainer, James Cusicfe, on horseback, walk across the country to the race course, a distance of eight miles.— After making sederal rounds of the track, and taking a ".beatbing spell'1 of a few moments, he starts and walks to the city arriving at tlie St. Lawrence, which he makes his stopping place, nbout eleven o'clock. Here he has the dust brushed from his clothes and his boats blacked, eats some steak, cooked rare, and drinks a couple of glasses of sherry, or a moderate quantity old ale. The severe training necessary to Hit him to pass through the terrible ordeal of the fight he isto .take partin, is beginning to have its effect upon him. Whatever may bo said, from a moral or humane point of view, of fights of this kind, the training necessary to fit a man for the trial puts more of manly vigor and strength in his frame than would ever get there otherwise. »lr.

Jones is no longer young man, as is well-known, and his training is having the effect to rojavenate him in appearance and bodilv activity and strength.'' The second dnpoait, $250 each, wai made on Saturday by the backers of Jones and McCoolc. the stakes being $1,000 aside,
