To wiitb legibly, to spell with some regard to tbe ancient prejudices of society, and to write only on one side of the paper, are habits which the. youngest candidate for the honors of print ought assiduously to cultivate. To writo briofly, ta write, intelligently, &nd to pay some attention to'tTiegraces of style, areattafpmeiits requisite for all who would raaek ^n advanced standing. One of tho wocst habits to which contributors are liable, is the habit of sending in great quan» titles of wry bad verses. But worse than writing bad veree is the habit of attempting to disease grave moral or political topics by those who know nothing of the first principles of thoir subject. In fact, the habit, of Tiling about any subject tbat one does not undorstetid is as vicious n3 it unhappily is common To this we owe .much ueeless •.'•eoMrpver&y, -much needless misaptire^ons'ioti, and not a little injury to th" writers themselves. There is ift question that tbe ituount-of travel will bo greatly increas* id by the reduction oi fares, wtiileit will pay:rSiIrQ*d companies better to run four five well filled oars to a train than two or three half filled. Ttiat passengers pay ie carried cheaply and money made, is cully demonstrated by the excursions in .vhich passeugers are taken at one-sixth rates, and tbe railroad companies are well ,wid for. their cats, while hundreds of dolars are made by tbe managers of the exjursion. Steamboats carry passenger* md board them better than they can get loard at first-class hotels for a leas sum han they would have to pay for stopping it the latter, and there is no question that ailroads will do better invthe end by working up to their fill capacity at cheap rates, than by running empty trains at jrecisely the sa-ne cost for engine, coniuctor, and men and the public will rejoice at the Indications tbat tho. rivalry ol ompanies is likely to lead them into the liberal and wise policy of iow fares.

There seems to be a growing dis

position on tho part of young men to ivoid work. Men who have good trades ire anxiously seeking lighter and more 'genteel" employment, oven when cou p'.ed with the disadvantage of light sala ries. A clerkship is considered just tbe ibing, even if it pays no more than just enough tc pay board, and keep the Dody decently clothed. "We understand tbe applications for clerkships in one of our .eading business house), average one or nore each day of the year. Mercantile ind professional men are constantly beset with applications. We advise young men out employment to be less fastidkUi. Whatever is honest is respectable, and it is more manly to hammer boulders on the streets or carry bricks and mortal up a ladder, than to loaf away a year, waiting, Jlioawber like, for "something to turn ap." Let tbem rather go to work and .urn something up.

GuaEdiasship or Habit?al Drunk \rdb.—Many

of the temperance men

censured the last Legislature for failing to enact a more stringent liquor law, but it passed an act, not generally known, that will be the cause' in many instances of -aving the little property of the drunk ird's family from the grasp of the rumseller. This is "An act to provide for care and custody of the persons and es lutes of habitual drunkards," approved March 9. 1867. Cases for application of this law can doubtless be found ia every neighborhood within the State.

The laws of the last ses«ion are now in the hand* of tbe county and township ofdoers, and thus made accessible to those who wish to examine them, but inasmuch as tho number published is too small for general distribution among tho people, we quote the more important sections of the act referred to-

The first seotion provides: "That when wrapiaint, ou oath shall be fi!ein tho Circuit Court or Court of Common Pleas, that any person (naming him) an habitual drunkard and is the owner of real estate or personal property (or both) and is incapable of taiiog care of tbe same, or that there is any danger of his squandering it, a summons shall be issued by the Gtera to the SQeriif, which sball be served upon such person at least* ten days befara the meeting of such court, and upon the triil of such case issue may be made and trial had under tbe same regulations tu civil causes are tried ij such court."

2. If after the evidence is heard,

the court qr jury trying the same shall find tbat sucn person is not an habitual drunkard, and is capable of managing his own estate, and that there is no danger of his squandering it, such person Sball be discharged, and the costs of such proceeding shall be taxed against tbe complaining party, bat if the court or jury trying the cause shall find that such person is an habitual drunkarU, is incapable of mannaging bu estate, or tbat there is danger of bis squandering the same, the court shall appoi^rsome resident of tbe oounty

(who shall execute bond to the wtisfter5""" 'lU KTH "W U1T" tion of tbe court that ho will &ithfully perform his trust.) who shall act as the guardian of «uch persons and his estate, under like restrictions and in the same manner with the same powers and cities as in the ca.-e of guardians for minors, and tbe cost of sucta proceedings' shall be paid out of such perso&'s estate.

Tbe third section provides for tho resto-j ration of the property of the pflrty so, placed under guardiaxisbip to his own.' control, on his application, accompanied by satisfactory proof that ho has voluntarily refrained from the use of intoxi-i eating liquors for &t least one year pre-

ceding such appiicitiotiSf This law will giva a long needed remedy forthe wasting of their estates by persons of intemperate habits, and puts it in the power of a member or friend of the family of such a party to place both his person and estate^under guardianship, to the sameja%tenb and effect as if, he were a

TH1DOT. JT

This law will, prove a protection to the drunkard against the fraud and wiles of sharpers, as well as to his family against the consequences of his own misconduct^ and if its remedial process is sought in all cases coming within its purview, a vast amount of suffering may be prevented,.

we glean the following facts in relation to the institution. It is founded for, the purpose of gratuitously educating the ns of deceased Soldiera and Seamen of the United States, and wa3 incorporated on the 8th of April last. In order to raise funds for the maintenance of the Institution, the Washington Library Company, chartered by tbe State of Pennsylvania, organized itself and perfected a plan which ha9 received the endorsement of the highest legal authority of this State and New Jersey. Their plan of action 1s to sell certificates of membership at $1 each. Five series of fine steel-plate engravings have been issued, ono of which will be given to every subscriber, in addition to a present which is aiso ensured, (there being no exceptions,) and which will be awarded on the 25 day of September next, at the Academy of Music or at the Institute. The presents. to be awarded consist of jrty Thousand, Ten Thousand, Five Thousand, and two of Twenty-Five Huudred Dollars, all in greenbacks* together with real estate, horses, pianos, melodeons, sewing machines, gold watches, camel's hair, lace and Cashmere shawls, dress patterns, silver ware, and an endless variety of other goods of great value. Every purchaser will, in addition to the engravings which he receives, also receive som^ one of the presents announced for distribution. All moneys received will be at once paid over to George A. Cooke & Co., bankers, No. 33 South Third street, who have been induced to act as receivers, from the simple fact that it has been'fully shown to their satisfaction that the whole net proceeds are to be devoted to the Riverside Institute, and the hundreds of orphans who are now knocking at its doors for admission, and who are deni ed this blessing on aceount of the want of funds. This reason has also Induced the Commissioner nf Internal Bevenue to exempt the affafr from all tax of any kind whatever. The object is a noble one, and the present plan was only adopter! after mature deliberation and consultation with the highest legal authority. In no other way can the Company raise so large a sum as will be required. And When a fair equivalent for the same is offered, It is to be hoped that this Institution will soon be in working order.
