Editor Express :—A citizen enquires the JquttiglI of yesterday, in regard to he item of fees and salaries, as reported tbe Auditor in his annual statement the year ending Juno 1st. Citigen 'irhes to know who has received these *eg, and intimates that tbe Kepublican ffice holders are the recipients. I would ay to Citizen that the books and pa•era of the Auditor's office aro open to ublio inspection, and he has a right to xaraine and get the information he deires. I will, however, say, to Citi.en that from my limited information, I can assure him that between $6,000 and 7,000 of tbe item he refers to, was paid
Auditor Corn well during the year, tnd we are credibly informed that if he «ill examine the Auditor's books carefuly, he will learn that during [r. Corn well's term of two years and bout nine months he was the happy rejipent of some $17,000 from the Oou nty reflnury, and that E. B. Allen, who was Auditor, between four and five years trew for that time about $8,000 fees. We hink he will find something about like hese figures to be correct. As to the tern of books and stitionery, he will find ne of our democratic brethren came in the March session for some $1,600 or 1,700 of the $5,000 .referred to, as his hare of that pile. We will also say to Citizen, that there are some county officers that have had and are having their irms in the public Treasury up to their Ibows, and it would be well for him and very tas-payer to spend an hour or two tow and then in examining the Commissioner's records and accounts filed, and he might find light whish would be usetil for him and every tax-payer in the rounty,

Thiuk yon that in tbte great State, There is any town like ours And as a people I calculate,
We're pumpkins among the flowers.
Therefore I deem It Just to eay,
While some workmen were excavating a cellar, in Polk township, Monroe coun ty, a few day* Ago, the Workmen struck what at first appeared to be a solid ledge •flock, and sitting down to rest, one ol their number began idly to pick at an ap parent fissure, when a block of stone, uearly two feet square, disappeared witb a dull thump. Tne men went eagerly to work, and removing tbe bottom of tbe pit,'dlscl6ed a chamber with a six foot ceiling, and eighteen by twenty-five feet within the walls, which are of solid, neatly seamed stone work. Banged in rows on rudely constructed .platforms, were twelve skeletons, each witn tomahawic and arrow beads at their sides, ear-rings and bracelets of solid silver lying where they had dropped, and piles of what appeared to have been furs in the center ot the plat, form, each pile crumbling to dust as soon as exposed'to tbe light. A number oi tools, made of copper, and hardened equal to the best cast steel, were also unearthed, and fresb discoveries are being conftantly made. Do copper mines exist in Southern Indiana? is the question that will natur ally arise in tne mind of the curious reader.

We are having, in the newspapers
of the large cities, the usual annual sensation about the sale of impurq m?at. In Pittsburg the Grand Jury have presented the butchers for selling carrion as fresh bsef, and the newspaper. leaders are ojd thissubjsct. In Chicago "blue beef" is the theme of leading articles in the papers and in Cincinnati the subject takes the phase of what one of the pupers calls."unripe pork." A butcber has biMb discovered in the act of filling breeding swine and preparing not only their flesh, but that of tbe immature young for sale. Oar own opinion is that but little f^esh meat ought to be eaten during the hot mouths. Yegetebles should form the staple of food during the dog days

Cmdnnati CfnattU of the 24th,
Jont&ins an article in regard to this institution, which we publish for the benefit jf the stock holders here, and those that fn intenstad in that Expnae Oompeny. If tbe article is true, there are some perons who have had their flagon awftiUy burned, and had better be looking oat now for a general scorching.
The Merchant's IJniOh'Expreaa Company have made a call upon stockholders for ten per cent, or ten dollars per share, one lalf payable June 23, andoneiialf Sep* ember 3d. This, when paid, will make thirty-five, dollars per share paid in it-" rbe stock in New York last week as low •s $7 on $25 paid in, and closed Saturday, •t $7 76. In another place we print in 11-the circulars issned by the Director* 'cccmpanying the call, which includes he action of the Trustee! at Cleveland.^ .tis, we are informed, bona fids the in* :ention of the managers to continue this rganization, and they express faith -in beir ability to make it a success. Much-, iQWever, mtlst depend upon tbe. response stockholders to the call now made. The itnount of stock outstanding, and upon •which the call is based, is $16,000,000-i-i
Che 8-nou.ut heretofore called in, 25 per •ent^ is $3,750,000. Of this there is probably $1,500,000 in real estate and equipnents, and the cash on hand is reported be $600,000. The amot^it in default m'previous payments is said to be $70^,300. These figures, if correct, would show $550,000 to have oeen lost in running and that sto-say, the receipts have been $550,000 iess than the expenses. Tbe loss would hus foot up $68,760 per month. On the •tber hand, it is asserted, that the $500,000 •eserye has been spent This, if true, would make the loss $137,800 pet monthi Of course, we have no means of testing be aocuracy of these figures mann^ers oTthe company have gfven no faefs in tbelr circular—only general statements. The argument in fcwrnf suppressing figures is that the old Companies make no report, and that the new company, if it *hould make a report, would play into the hands of its opponents. StQcM»ddM% however, will hardly see the foMe of this, and will be likely to call for information. The Buffalo stockholders haf^PW^ointod a .•ommittee to visit Auburn for tne purpose of examining the affairs of the Company, tnd resolved that if the latter should be 'ound satisfactory they would pay $» net hare rather than baVe tin Cmpthj' mil. What the Cincinnati stockholders propose to do we have not heard, but a consultation meeting #511- probably be called.— Meantime the old companies ace also joshing mpney but it is their dete^titoatton, we believe, to eontinue tho contest It is knojiff that, the Merchants' Union Company proposed terms of compromise, indirectly ifnot directly, sometime ago, which were declined on thia ground that four companies could not be- operated- profitably without charging a higher tariff than previifbd previous to th ettopositidn. It is probable that the profits of the Izpress busihess have beeh greatly exagerat^d, and a oorrect exhibit at this time would show that the aggregate reoeipts ire less than immediately previous to the war, while the expenses are much heavier than at that time. It is also probable chat ifall opposition were oat of the way, and olii rates charged, tbe profits would not exceed 6 per oent on the nominal oapitai, and it might be a year before any if the old companies would be in a con* dition to pay dividends. HuWever the present contest may end, it will take some time and muib money to pay the •cost of tbe war." These remarks ape uade, of course in the ^krk, because all ^the companies are conducted upon the principle of very close corporations but what we have said may «xcite in stock* Holders a desire for light, and lead to de* velopmin'u that will enable theik to act understanding^. If the Merchants' (Jniou is to go down, it" had better go down now, before any more good money is thrown away. If, on the other band, sueeess is possible, stockholders should stand by it Unless the present call is responded ko, failure is inevitable but with the lnforWa tid&we now have we are not prepared to say that a failure is not inevitable any how. Therefore, it is our impression that the Company should make a full a)Q( candid exhibit of its affairs. If aU right, it has nothing to fr»ar from tbe old companies. If all is not right, the mana* gars should deal fairly with stockholders. Tf a faithful exhibit or the business of Jlorchanu Union Express shows that $1,500,000 now asked for wi 1 be sufficient to carry it through, stockholders will furnish the money promptly, but if this cannot be shown, tne managers are bound in good faith to subscribers, to tell ttiem tbe worst and abide the result. It the late United States Telegraph Company had been candid with subscribers, might have been the telegraph company of the country to-day but the manager lied to stockholders, tred to take care of themselves, and th enterprise went under, burying three shares of the stock in one the Western Union, and putting the atter, by tbe force of the swindle, down to 40 cfauts on the dollar. We do not wish to be understood as intimating that tbe managers of the Merchants' Union Express, propose to follow tbe example ofthe Telegraph men but we mention it to sbow tbe importance of dealing candidly with shareholders. The truth never dia, nor never can harm an honestly managed enterprise, and we have never known any concern to float very long upon misrepresentations. Those who insist upon an opea and candid policy in regard to this Express Company, therefore, will prove to be its best friends.,
