Tnr VajSje oj Abhks.—Experiments ba^e served to show that for purpose of tillage, Jeaflbflji jtsbea are JuBt as good as unltttchod. So that housewives may have ulj lhe u£i) ?f their ashes for soap, and, then employ thorn in the gardens Leached

ag

bM become better by boing exposed for some time to the open air, absorbing from tbe-atraospbero fertilizing jjtmljtres a W

Bo valuable are ashes regarded it Kuintly

They are excellent about the roots of Jruit trees, as far a« their fibers .extend, spreading the old each year, and renewiuc the deposit.

They may be thinly spread over the grass plat in the lawn or door yard, as tbey wiilgive vlgor pnd deeper color and 8tr-'"etb to the grass.

We hitve usually added' about one shovelful of &ebes to every twenty, in making a com post Tor flowers, Hftes, jtauS^-SG.

Ashes are peculiarly good ftt all kinds of melon, squash -and-cucucumber vines. This is well .known to th9se who raise •water watermelons on bufrnid fl&lds^on old charcoal pits, &c. We have seen statesments of cucumbers being planted up»/n a peck of pure leached ashes in a fcoto in the earth, and thriving with vigor. The nsbes of vines show a great amount of potash and as wood ashes afford this subjtunce abundantly, its use would seem to be indicated bv theory as well as confirmed by experiment.

Lastly, whenever proiind is liable to cuff, eeveroly from drought, we would advise a liberal use of ashes and salt.

The Prac ical Farmer says that a table spoonful of course salt dropped on each hill of corn soon after planting, is far better to keep off out worms than ibi cow in gU8 tnr. The salt is. carriocl down ljy the-whns^ and'aets i»9'a fertilizer, be sides destroying tho worm. Unlesatho. sousun is very wot, it thinks \fae coating of tar interferes, with tho absorption by th6 corn of the necessary moisture for germination..

Compost

Mantjfactxjkk.—Tho best,

and in the end tbe cheapest, way of mak iqg coqvpoet, is have a pit or hollow wiide in the stnbfe yfefd, eayfouT or'live leet deep, twenty feet long and ten brond, or uny dimensions in proportion to tbo es,toni of your farming operations, and it would bj better, of course, if it wero cured wilh brick or stone or with cement but if xhe subsoil is a compact, impervious iluv, it will aribttor without. This will preserve the whole, whoreas t/io-common latthod of throwing together the material of ail-kinds, from evo/y source, in a pil*?. a great quantity of-the test sub fituiiccB in tbo manure Is lost by the action of rains, etc, Into this put all the truslj, the straw, the litter and dung of Iho yitrd, together with theBlops of tho kiteticn, wash house, and the night soil, (utajoiixed^by sulphate of copper) and otter'manures collected on tho place.

Have drains made from tho stalls of the homes and cattle ending in thij pit-, so as to seturo ull tho liquids and into it from timo to time a quantity of the droppings of poultry or a quart of guano. By those incini'8. though yoa are at little expense, a a lurge quantity of the most stimlating and exuiting compost can be propurtd. The pit would bo much better Tr covered AVith a shod to keep off the rain, (though some water is necessary for It to prevent what Is called flre-rot or danip), arid if no proui.d be roady for it when the pit is full, it may be presorved for any length of time „by putting oyer it ft lajor, bf eartb.'

Limb

Apple Trees.—We

have known to me farmers to make it a regular practice for a succession of years to throw caustio lime around their apple trees in the spring and summar. We once noticed that a tree standing in the immediate vicinity of our dwelling bad all at once put forth with renewed energy, and we were at a loss for some time to define the causes On examination, we found that a quantity of lime, which had accidentally been spilled, and rendered worthless by becoming mixed with the refuse on '.hi stable floor, bad been thrown at the foot and around the tree, and to this, a.tho principal cause, we immediately ac crtdi'.el tlie reviviscence and renewed fructification of tho tree.

Taking tho hint from tho accident, we purchased twelva iasks of lime, and ap pl.ed a half bushel to each of the trees in our orehurd, and found that it produced immediate beneficial cd'octs. Not tho houUb of the trees only, but the quality of :he fruit also was greatly improved. This application will bo ojpocially beneficial in so.li whore'there a redundancy of vegetable matter. We would advise our farmer?, in some places, oepeciallv in new lorast lands recently cleared, an^ on low lands, tu make a trial of this experiment, and see whether it is not doserving of the high recommendation it secures.

RotaXios or

Crops.—A

correspondent

inquires of us"On what principle is tho rotation of crops founded, what are the benefits of such rotation, and which is the best system of rotation To answer these questions fully and thoroughly would take up more space and time than is consistent v.itii acknowledged editorial brevity.— Howovor, wo wiil answer them in the or dtfrnimed, as briefly and succintiy as we c-u, so asl render elaboratenos* unnoc es»ary, is pa sibic. 1. R'taticn is founded on the cor r-otly ascertained pnncip!?. that differont .sses of crops requiro different proporti uis of the various subitances which are in 1'genuous to soils, or wnich abound in tue various fertilisers applied with a Tiew o: etir.ching such soils. Thus, crops may bt* insdt to succeed ouch other, with the greaiesi economy in. thu use of manures.—

X'. is bfilievei that the graiu crop carry off the largest ptrt of th-i phospnave^ but tl erewili yet remain in the manurecoasiderable quantities of other substances, whivh tbe grain crops do net so particularly require, such as potash and soda of tutSf, the root crops, such as turnips and potatoes, are wonderful absorber- then is. is churned that there is not enough i!tr.o leit in the soil to warrant a good crop of bay. '4. "Xi.t benefit is found in tbe abun .i.t yield of the several species of crops ond'tl.e ^ving of manures or, in other \Vi. ds, the most advantageous consumption by each .successive wop of all the

means for ilj growth BoUtlon also t9nds to pvabax sources of the soil, acdwaureUhe dritruetion of obnoxious weeds »nd A field cropped with wh»*ftt foeMuccetivfcl-' vears becomes worn out for that particular grain, and troublesome weads. chess and rad root, &cn incfeasa in provoking abundance. Pastures loft unplowed for a number of years become luxuriant with buttercups and ox-eye daisies A disproportion of spring crops faciliates the spread of wild mustard, &o, snd the jncrease of grubs, wire wor ms, etc. Sow* tion. is unmhitakeably a most valuable auxiliary to clean cultivation. ... 3. The system ot r*ation is simple, evidently 6" "founded upon natural laws, and.requites no, additional expenditure of labor. It costs no more to cultivat^ crops wliicb are made to succeed each other judiciously than to cultivate those arranged in theyorst manner possible It is impossible us to state which system of rotation is the best, or to recommend any particular system. That must be determined by experience in each section of tbo country, under the various circumstancot of climate, soil, location of -soil, jvfid the value of crops.

The one prominent thing to be remflm* bereo is, that there are several distinct classes of crops, considered with reference to the substances which they take from the soil, and that these classes of crops should bear a part in every system of ro~ tation. The principal of these are grain and grass crops.—Farm an4 Fireside.

A coat of ashes may Jw laid in the spring ovar the whole garden, and spaded ia With the barn-yard m»iium "Theyfnn^bediig hbout'gdowbbrry and currant bushes wittr especioif benefit.

Any person sustaining loss by tho maifti* ing or killing of his.sheep by dog«Tm*y present hi3 claim for damages to the trustee of the township in waich the mischief was done, and upon proper proof being made to tbo satisfaction of.tho trustee, ho is required to award, and to pay' out of tbe fund arising from the dog tax, such damages as he may deem just con-1 ditioned, however, that the claimant will not prosecute the owner of the dog causing the damage, and provided that tie has not prosecuted an action against the owner.

In case a surplus of over fifty dollars of this fund remains in tho hands ot t&e township trustee on tbo first Monday In March of any gtven year, over and above all orders drawn on the same, such surplus ia required to bo passed tc the credit of the school revenue of tho township, to be expended in tho payment of tuitiou in such township as other funds received for that purpose.

What amount of claims have been presented against this fund in the respective (bounties, by sheep owners, we have no lueuns ol' knowing, but we are informed^ of several counties in which large amounts bave been paid into the township school fund, in default of claimants on account of sheep destroyed.

Tho fact, therefore, that great ravages are occasionally committed among flocks by dogs, should not deter our farmers from raining sheep, as tho law makes am« pie provision for reimbursing such losses. The high prices and comparative scarcity ofbeof and pork of late years, bave largely Increased tho consumption of mutton and It is likely to become more and more an artielo of diet, in case tho abundance of sheep shall enable it to be furnished at reasonable rates.

The valuo of tbe wool produced by the number of sheep owned by our farmers is no inconsiderable item, we think, at^a fair esiimata. not less than f6,000,000 annially, at the iow price it now bears.— Tbe present tux -n dogs will be continued as long as tbe farmers of tho State choose to tvo it continued, and if it should at a time be found insufficient io make good the dunnages resulting from the raids of dogs upoa the sbeop folds, tbo Legislature wiil' hot hesitate to inrroaf^f'lts I mourn. Valuable Milk Form.

Mr. R*s Winans, o( Baltimore, now over seventy y^ars ot age, purchased in 1861, a farm of about seven hundred acres along the banks of tbe Pntapsco river, and about ix miles from Baltimore* His land cost hiin fifty thousand dollars he added buildings at a cost of $20,000 hir fencing cost hiia three thousand dollars, and ho manured at an outlay of sixtyseven thousand dollars—making the total cost of his estate $120,000. During the year ending on the 1st of May last, his sales of milk amounted to $37,630,71 of cows and calvtes iu the samo period, ho told $11,983 worth, and had fifteen or twenty more animals on hand than at the convn*enc»ttH»»t of the year. He however put-chased $9,008 worth of cows and heifers during the year. At the close of the year be had on band two hundred and twenty to.is of hay, afd bis toial product for th :s yet»r was estimated at 1,800 tuni—

great average per acre. His system of manuring tends to build up ana nourish his land, and not to impoverish it. His :niik is sold to tho small grocers in Baltimore, at thirty cents a gallon."

A scuooluastke, who was fond of the use of his grog as of the globes, was ask* ed tbe difference between gravity and gravitation. "When I've druBK five glasses of grog," replied the pedagogue, -'my gravity vanishes and my gravitation begins to operate.

We»t

will

give you a very simple, awl thick, effective remedy, that I have tried for several years, and I employ no other pre-

beans, say 15 or 20 in each bill. When the beans begin to ehude the vines too much, I gradually thin them out, either by pulling theija up, or, what is better, pinching them off, so as not to disturb th« roots of the vines. Tbe bean plant seems to be offensive to the bug, and he avoids it. I know of no better remedy, and am almost ensirely free from their annoy ance. In this manner I plant my cucumber, squaih and melon seeds^—H. W.

In the census report of 1850 Indiana is credited with 1,122,593 head of sheep.— Ten years iuter tho number had increased -to 2,188,187, being a gain of nearly one hundred per cent, or ten per cent, annually. We bave no statistics at hand by which to determine tbe number av this date, but estimating the same ratio of increase that there was from 18S0 to 1860, there are now in this State about 3,7000,000 head of sheep.

How ma.ty dogs we have Uas not been11 ascertained by any census report, Out the amount of taxes assessed upon the owners of these sheep-killing animals, in 186(J„.may be considered an approximation to the true number. Nino counties" made no return of the dog tax, in consequence, probably of deci*ions in some of trie Inferior courts against tho constitutionality of tho law imposing: it, bht the amount levied in tho other eighty-three ount ei wuB $154,840, and as the usual tax in one dollar for each dog, wo have aboat 165,000 oun of high and low degree, against nearly 4,000,000 shoep,

The Supremo Court having sustained the constitutionality of tbe dog tax, the delinquent counties will henceforth collect it, and unless tbe hydrophobia panic has -thinned out the dogs largely, the amount oi the shiop indemnity fund, will'-sbo-w a cor.siaorable increa=e in the next report of the Auditor of Stale.

The dog tax is set apart as a fund to ruimburi'.e damages done by the killing or maiming of sheep-by. .dogs, and as we have met eome farmers who were not aware of its provisions, and proposed to abandon sbeop raising in consequence of the ravages committed by vagrant dogs on thoir flocks, w« have thought it not unimportant to call attention to tbo provisions of tbe act uf March 2, 1865, which was passed with tho double object of discouraging tho increase of dogs and encouraging tho growth of wool.
