But the-twenty dollars, although Walther 4wned a small house, did not suffice to feed ind clothe his laTge family. To be ftjraa not necessary to buy shoes and Ibeouit :Cor the children, for in summer tima the little boys and girls ran about barefboted, and in winter tbey bad to content themselves with wooden shoes, which |f thejy Wese a little heavy, at least kept theu Kfkrmr.spd did not need resoling, as leather ones would doL Bat the Children niyst'have clothea. Frau Walther made thflr garments.of gray linen, woven and spun |by herself, in order that they might not cOst sO flfrnch but even this' simple iclotblng colt money and many times in the year friend Walther scratched behind his eAr when his wife came and represent ed thiat Hans or Christian or Lotte must really have anew garment, because the Old "one was so torn that it could be pieced and patched no more. Then they would take coUhidtogether, and somehow or'oth^ er, when their poverty reached its height, help Would come from the most unmcpedte4 quarter. On account of liis gentle, kind disp
Mition, the. villagers Were very fond of Walther, and though it never occurred to them to raise his salary, which would have beon the proper thing, yet, when he had played unusually well, they would send him gifts that often helped hua in his niost pressing wants.
With all their poverty and all their need however, Walther's family were. always cheerful, and they never Ion, even in the worst times, their faitb in God, and their hope for abetter future. Tbe six children bloomed like red poppies, and their simple mode of living kept them well, so that not one of them were ever sick, father Walther eat all the day hard at work, making jackets and coats for the peasantry and never complained that the time seedhed long to him. And he did not despise his trade, by any ineans, although be could play on the organ so well ••for," said he, "it brings me in but little, and trade stands on no golden but only silver foundation, but without it we should long ago have gone to ruin.'.'
But he loved his art above all things. Often whenjha had beeen sitting at work till far into the night, busy with needle and shears, he would slip softly into the church, lock himself in, and play whatever his mood inspired. In such still hours he played most beautifully and if a belated traveler was passing he would often stand by the church and li ten to the heavenly sounds that, full of strength and sweetness,_pealed forth from the house of Qod. Tbe pastor bad often said. "The organist in tbe capital who plays every Sunday to our gracious prince and nobleman, cannot possibly play so well as our Walther and it is a sin and a shame, that such a man should be so miserably off in our village." He had often tried to persuade Walther to go to the capital, aad ask leave to play in the court oburch but the modest man bad always refused, and could not be persuaded to leave the village. "If God only lets me keep what I have, I shall be content," be would answer. "Here my music gives pleasure, but I ehould be laughed at at court, No, no, Herr Pastor 1 JDo not try to tempt me to tach a bold undertaking 1"
