THK CIRCULATION.

Proems Of the Union Pacific Rallroad from Omaha. The United States Commissioners have officially advise! the Secretary of the Interior tbat th?y have examined the eighth section 6f this road, beginning at the 306th and ending at the 346th mile-post, and have found it ready for service, and fully equipped with the necessary locomotive?, cars, etc. This great road it being pushed forward with a degree energy tbat must injure its early com pit tion. General -Sherman gays~ttoat*it is iuseful and necessary to the government tbat it could well afford to build it on its own account, and save money from the diminished cost of transporting public Btores. In fact, the government praetic-tically-gHarantees-the-construction of the road by making the bonds it issues for tha. purpose a second mortgage, and permit ting the Company to make Ks own bonds a first mortage. Although 345 miles oi the Union Pacific are now-ready for the care, but 200 iniles were in use during May, and the earnings of this portion oi the line during that, month are. officially reported at $261,782. Deducting opera ting expenses, this leaves a sum of more than

/our timet

tbu interest, on the Com

pany's bunds that can be issued on tbat length of road. There seems to be no doubt, now, of tbe early completion of the great line to the Pacific: Ten thousand men are cutting their way eastward from the California-end and over through the Sierra Nevadas and one section of the eastern end is hardly done before the government comoiisbioners are called upon to examine ana accept another and what is more jand better for the stockholders and botidholdersj, the net earnings of both ends are sufficient to pay the interest on their bonds several times over. Tbe cap italists who bnve already paid their millions for the stock already see a profitable return, and we can see no reason why the First Mortgage Bonds, advertised in another column, are not one of the safest at well as most profitable investments of tbe duy. ThesA-buods-bave just-been- offirrea to the public, but tbe daily subscription are already large.

(letting Ready to take Possession The preparations for the. transfer of Euffian America to the United States aregoing on rapidly. Kussia seems determined that wo shall have it, and does not reqi.ire the little ceremony of the pay meut of the purchase money. She will convey the territory without waiting for an appropriation by Congress, and wil be satisfied with a mortgage upon their national honor. Mr. Seward seems equal ly willing to accept the bargain without further formality, and he is about to despatch a revenue cutter to Sitka to look out for the customs due upon good which may be landed there. A large business may be done in evading tbe revende, if red tape should have its way, and in this matter it is feft there must be no red tape. Tbe revenue cutter Lincoln, which is detailed for this duty, will also be employed in surveying the adjoining coast, and in protecting the new commerce which must inevitably spring up witn the Northwestern territory. It is supposed that this vessel will make notable discoveries, and add much to our stock of information about the new pur chase.

A Foolish Party.

The tolegrapb, by way of tbe Atlantic, informed us a few days ago that tbe party of Fenians bad landed at Dungurvon, upon the coast of Ifelafid, "and" fell at once into tbe hands of the police. Where they had come from was not then known: but it Is now stat'd tbat they came from Bosion, in M.a8-aubu«euts. If such is iht case, the persons in question will find what they ought to have known long be« for that ibey were on a fool's errand.— UuKs- the vessel in which they embarked bad a very long voyage, they ought to have lcn wu long before leaving thi*country that the Great Revoluti was quashed, and its success hopeless. They have deliberately run into the jaws of the lion, and ut a time when tbe royal beast is in a very bad humor. If they set sail from this country to make war againn Great Britain, tbey violated our laws, and can hope for no interposition of our government. They will be considered by the Brit th as enemies of the human race and although it has been determined to commute the death sentences in the cases of tbe convicted Fenians to im prisonment for their lives, these marauders do not occupy the same position, and some of them may not be treated as cifully. If their enterprise is wholly their own, regret will be expressed in this country at their foolish and wicked course, but if it shall appear tbat they wero sent off by any of tbe agitators here, no form ot indignation could be too strongly expressed to testify our horror at the criminal atrocity.

Kmperors in Banger.

To kill an ordinary man is, unfortunately, a thing that can be easily done but to kill a potentate seems to be a matter of great difficulty. In this country we have had a melancholy instance of the ea with which a President can be assas sinated but in Europe, where attempts upon crowned heads have been plentiful of late year?, the assassins fail, under circun:stauces which it is supposed would be highly favorable f_.r their purposes. Louis Napoleon has bad several narrow escapei, end his predecessors on the throne have had their experienoe also, and at last died in their beds by tbe mysterious fiat of na» ture which ends every life. Alexander, of Russia, on tbe 16ih of April, 1866, escaped the bullet aimed at his heart by Demetrius Karokowsky. On the 6th of June, 1867, he escaped another bullet, which may hare been intended either for him or his host) the £mperor Napolaon.

Both of these potentates'baVe been forto. nate, aid the* escapes, the odds in most ases bei strongly in favor of the assailant, have always been ascribed to merciful dispensations of Divine Providence, [t seems to be supposed that this attempt at Paris was against the life of tbe Km* peror of Buesia, and it is rumored that the assa?Bin is an expatriated Pole. This tbe danger of- absolute monarchs. They have nnmerous enemies whom they can« not know or suspect, and wtere a wbole people has been embittered, a blow may oe struck by a desperate enthusiast, whose mtriice it would be impossible to antici vatej and against whom it would be impossible to guard. If this at» tempt has been against Nnpoleon, be will punish it as previous efforts of the 'time kind have been punished if againBt

Alexander, tbe outrage upon the laws of o*pitulity wiit make him doubly anxious t6 make tbo retribution severe.

Virglman's Opinion—The

fiiQhinond txaminer Disconsolate^

The Richmond

Easaminer

of Tuesday

thus wails over the rvCent order .of General Schofield respecting registration al ready published in our columns.

However much reason we bud to com ,,lain of obscurity, ambiguity, and want of clearness in the opinion of Mr. Staobery, we cannot certainly find fault with the 'eneral order of General Scbofield, pubfisted th.s morning, and being either doubtful, obscure or defactn e. Tbe Com' manding General comes directly to tbe point. He does not leave the shadow of book to hang doubt upon. He speakt language so plain that he who runs may read. No Delphic utterances are uis lor, with one bold stroke of bis pen —an instrument at present mightier than ihe sword—be plainly tells us ttiat every uian who

voluntarily

aided tbe rebellion

is disfranchised, 'inid, of course, includes liue-tenths of I.he white population oi Virginia, by the most favorable calculation that we can make and really we do not believe tbat there are five thousand ivgnl white voters jn „the State who can conscientiously take an oath that they never voluntarily aided the bouth in her colossal struggle.

The vision uf liberty, which for the past few months has inspired our bopes, is aoout to fade like the '.baseless fabric" of a dreaui, and leave ''not a track behind." The military bill had been otherwise id terpreted by everybody, and even the wiaist Congressmen had declared that Uid not disfranchise the rank and file of ..he Confederate army who had accepted the President's amnesty, and would take i.he oath to support the Constitution but now comes this general order No. 34 wake us up to the stern realities ot the -ituation, and in its text we find a aey to tbe boastful assurances given by the Bad .cal leaders of their certainty of victory, and to tne great conscience often express ud by tbe negroes in their strength, and in their ability to carry tbe elections.

In a word, we are ftii disfranchised for ihe meanest coward tbat ever hid from iho conscripting officer, will scaroely Swear that he never gave voluntary aid to the Southern cause, and if this order is to be regarded as the ultimatum, we have but one alternative, torosort to wholesale per jury, or leave the field entirely to the ne ,roes and tbe few so-called''loyal" whites. 0' course tbe first idea is not to be con -ldt-red for a moment, and to the last we must submit.

IfeTer Kissed a White Girl. Some time ago a planter a short distance from Memphis g*ve a party to tbe young folks in the neighborhood.

It was a gay time, and in the course of tha evening the boys and girls played forfeita.

While this was going on it chanced that the son the planter, a nioe, modest fellow, had to claim a forfeit of some of the girls, but he was overcome with diffidence. "Go ahead, John,", said tbe planter, "and kiss some of tbe girls."

John bitched from one foot to the other, blushed, and finally blurted out: '*1—I never kissed a white girl, father."

[from the Louisville Courier.] OLDEJN MEMORIES.

BY J. B. BAXJUCK.

From the dim, dim shores of the sorrowful past Comes the phantom of memory to me, As a billow borne forth by the desoUte blast

From the storm-beaten heart of the sea With a thought of the beautifu' years long gone— Those brightest, divtnsst of years— It martfiurs, to-night,'in a rythmical tone

That melts me to sadness and tears.- ,r

It brings back the dreams of the better time, When our heart like the music of birds, •?. In the metrical flow of a melody-chime,

Were wed to the sweetest of words— •.--j When we gathered rich blossoms—wove garlands of flowers,

Tbat emblemed love's holiest vow, As the wreath of fame, we counted as ours, With a dladem^lflreach brow.___ **.

Ah!'t is sad to think of those dear, old days-rV,,, The world was so beau ifal then— fe.ii Bre fancy and feeling »ad followed, ths ways

Of wicked and sinful men There were inndcent pleasures and soulful sm'lss, In the being of passionate yo 'th— A faith tbat no art ef the tempter beguiles

In the sacred trust of truth. ife

Some ship bas be«n wrecked on tEe msrcIlaSs By tbe storm king* merciless power, Whence cometb this spirit of memory to mt &

In the hush of this sorrowful hour It comes, as the reminder so sad, In the memorable years now fled, Since, together, w- saUed with a spirit as gled

As the. ipples that under us sped.

The night Is dreary with darknaa without— The win .s they are piercing and cold. And the wings of the tempest Is flapping about

As the snow falls adrift on the world The emb rs are cheering and cheerful within, As the heart no sorrow can dim, And my thoughts, to the brightest of msmorles akin,

Biae up as a well to the brim.

Here's a spectre-like hand in whose tenderly grasp Beat tbe heart-bounding pulses of did In Its welcoming zeal—ia the warmth of its clasp,

Throbs a feeling that never grew cold An hour together, we will run o'er the past, Recounting its pleasure and pain, As the beautiful visions, too lovely to last,

Bisesout of their ashes again.

A lining of silver—a frosting of gray, I trace In the raven-wreathed bead And the eye that looks so wan, that was bright on the diy

When the taddest of farewells was said A wrinkle or two may be seen on the brow, A lurking of care in the face, "S And sadness unsnoken, how vividly now,

In the shade ef expression I trace.

Ah I oft through ths Joy that the lightest may know, Some grief stea's direct to the heart, When the looks that was stranger sadness or woe,

May be shaped in the congress or art And the smile 'twas so bright, I never ,had thought,

That brow could be shaded wits floe In the days when first from existence ws oaught, JThe hue of its freshness and bloom.

Then a tear to the beautiful years that are gone, Ths memories no sorrow oan shade. As the shadows of night that flee in the dawn,

All else from existence may fade, Set, with the hope In the heart, and life In tha e,es,

And feeling that never grows cold, The future we'll trust—bid the present go by, And cling to the memories of old. ATLANTA,GA.

Times,

writing of American

contributions to the Exposition, says: ''Messrs Mason & Hamlin, ot New York, have sent a beautiful collection of cabinet organs. The workmanship of the oases compares favorably with the best specimens of the kind in the French department, and the designs are light, rich and elegant. It is only of late years that the cabinent organ bas taken a legitimate place in the ever-extending family of musical instruments. -In--its oJd-forn»| it was a coarse provocation to psalmsinging a loud inducement to howl in short or long metre. The grossness and inequality of its scale sufficed to cover up every defect of the performer, even tbe ouftom of singing through the nose, which is yet prevalent in certain pious and occidental districts. Messrs. Mason & Hamlin were among the first to seriously consider the possibility of ohan a toy into an instrument of mnsic. der tfiefr" Bands 'the" various registers qave been equalized, and tbe whole cbar» aoter of tbe instrument is thoreby rendered homogeneous. Tbe quality of the tone is cleat and vocal, and tbe contrivances for blending it in many forms are ingenious without being complicated. In Europe^ they still adhere to the rough, loud tone, which with ns have been totally superseded. Messrs. Maspn & Hamlin have, therefore, to struggle against a prejudice, or rather a predilection. Some of the most eminent organists in Paris have already declared in their favor, and I hope th&t the jury msy do the same.— They are alone in the honor of fighting the rest of the world, and it would be pleasant to record that victory had perched upon their banners. dwlw
