,r_ me Panama Railroad. Some very interesting statistics of the traffic of the Panama Railway are publish «d. It appears that since its construction nearly four hundred thousand passengers have passed over the line but it is its traffic that most interests us. In eleven years nearly six hundred and seventy-five million .dollars of gold, silver- and other treasure have poured in from the Pacific to the Atlantic side of the Isthmus. The shipments of 6'ilver during the last three years have been steadily declining. Most of this product comes from the Pacific coast of South America but also a large amount, previous to 1863, came from the western coast of Mexico, being smuggled lout of the oountry by British men-ot-war !by knowledge and consent of the British (government, and then shipped in great part for England via the Panama route {The .freight traffic in the eleven years, ending in 1866, shows a transpbrti&ion of 614,635 tons,"but in 1866 alone it amaunt ed to 107,000 tons and thia year it is estimated that 150,000 tons will pass over the road. Tho fact# and figures herein stated ghov? the immense value of this short transit between the two great oceans, and the growing importance it is taking as a channel, for our Atlantic and Pacific
trade., As yet the Jvalue of the transit is little known.. Its vast and increasing importance, however, is well shown by -the struggle which is now going on between 'English and American capital jfot. the possession of the route. Fabulous sums have been"--offered to New Grenada, which it appears," almost' expects^to support the government from the" sale of the franchise. So far it is probable this coun try will hold on to the road and we believe it is absolutely necessary for us to possess this short cut lrom Europe tojthe Indies. Moreover, we must hold to it, that we may control the trade of the South American States on the Pacific) which trade is to-day almost entirely in English hands. Under all circumstances the merchants should control this great link between the two oceans,.and ojir government should aid by every means possible to sustain the elfort.
A Splendid Belle, of, Revolutionary TimesThere is" now on exhibition at tne jewelry establishmerifcof' Meters Browne & Spuulding, corner of Bro&djray and Prince streets,: a magnificent rilic of the revolution, of great'value- and beautiful workmaffthij} It is a gold snuff box, presented by Louis XVI., King of .Prance, to Col. John Laurens, of South
Carolina, Aid de Camp' to Gen. George Washington, on the occasion of Col. Laurens' visit to the Court of France as
special envoy from the United States
enameled and studded with diamonds. The iop has a finely executed likeness of Lours XVI., set in a cluster of thirty-four diumonds, while the outer circle contains twrnty^fbur—jiiamonds. This beautiful relic has been in the possession of the.'descendants of Col. Laurens since his death, and is now tho property of one of them, a witjow lady, who has lost almost her all by .the late war, and who sends this here Jto be sold, in order to maintain herself and children. It is valued at $10,000. The history attached to the relic is as follows: When Col. Laurens reached France, although his reception was favorable and encouragement given him that his request would be granted, yet the delays continually interposed by the
Minister, tho Count de Virgines, afforded little -prospect of immediate success. Col. Laurens, convinced that procrastination would give a death blow to American independence, resolved, in defiance of Court etiquette, to make a personal request o,f the King. Dr. Franklin, our Minister at Versailles, vehemently opposed his intention, but finding Laurens firm iu his purpose, said: "I mpst cordially wisb you success, Colonel, but anticipate so different a result that I warn you I wash my hands of the consequences." Accordingly, at the first levee, Col. Laurens, walking directly up to the .King, presented iis petition to which he solicited his earnest attention, and said
Should the' favor asked be denied, or even delayed, there is cause to tear that the sword which 1 wear may no longer.be drawn in the defence of the liberty of my country but wielded as a British subject against the monarchy of France." His decision met its just reward. Apologies were made for delays, and the Minister »gave his serious attention to the matter, and tho negotiations were crowned with
Success. Messrs. B. & S. have also in their store several articles which formally constituted a portion of tb furniture of the •unfortunate Marie Antoinette. They consist of a casket and table, tete-a-tete set, several vases, card receivers,&c^ all pf whicli are highly and beautilully ornamented with designs executed in por 'celain painting, ana richly studded with jewels.—New Fork Times.
Large and Skilllul Forgery—A New l'ork Bank Victimized, to the Kxtent of $17,500—Supposed Clue to tlie Perpetrator.
A daring and successful forgery, committed on the Broadway (Hew York) Bank, about a month since, has just come e-to light. The Herald says the oheck was payable to or bearer, for $17,600, purporting to bo in compensation for work done on a public school house, in
Twenty-sixth street, where there is no building of the kind. The check was signed with the forged signatures of the President and Clerk of the Board of Education and tho Chairman of the Finance Committee. It was not one of the checks of the Board, but a very good lithograph of the figured checks, which are not ac--ces»ible any but the very few who have the right to fill them. It was, however, about an eighth of au inch shorter than the checks of the Board.
Alter being presented and paid at the -•bank, it appears that it lay in the safe until Saturday, when it was sent to the office of the Board of Education among the genuine drafts, and was noticed by the auditing cl«rk of the Bord, who called the attention of Mr. Thomas Boese, the clerk of the Board of Education to it, and he instantly pronounced it a forgery.
There are .various theories as to who the perpetrator of this bold and skillful torgery is, and there is only one opinion on tie point. The simplicity of the circumstance, which the perception of a keen man turned to the advantage of the aotective officer in starting him on the true trail, v?ili be, probably, one of the most interesting developments evef made in an atlair of tuig nature, when the time comes to lay it before the public. Until then, however, patience must prevail.

The purple finch,i» aninteresting cage bird, hardy and of beautiful plumage, lbey require to be kept in separate cages, as they are very quarrelsome and pugnacious. The bird should be fed on hemp and other seed.
The yellow bird 6trongly resembles to? English gold-flhch. Their song is wefckJ but very agreeable,. and they can taught manytricks.
The indigo finch is another beautiful bird, and is possessed of a sweet song. is very vigorous, And in cages should be fed on hemp, poppy aid canary seed.^ A
The nonpareil or painted finch is more ornamented than useful. In confinement they should be fed on milk and canary seed. They are very susceptible to cold, and great care should be taken of them. ..
The seng sparrow is rarely seen caged, yet his song is very sweet, and in some respects reseftibles that of a ca« nary. —They are very docile, and live exclusively oh seed. iv ,.
The boblink, a well-known biga, sings a sort of jingle, merry and pleasant.— They are easily kept in confinement, and should be fed on millet and canary seed,
The scarlet tanagers are the gaudiest birds our forests can boast. Their plumage is their jjlwef ,attraction. They are hardy birds, aitt'd tfheiW&nfitaSd should receive animal J'ood.
The red»winged 'blackbird.is caged, for its beautiful pluniage, .though it can be taught to wBistle„a few botes with sweetness and sometimes to tftterl few wSrds. They are v$ry vigorous birds, and in cage should have aoimSl food.
The mocking bird is possessed of more wonderful powers of song than auy of the feathered tribe, and though he may not naturally have the sweetness of voice of some other birds, he can imitate any^pf them to the life. This bird, Although "he prefers thefVieiiuty of man's habitation, will, if disturbed, forsake its young it is said he will sometimes kill them. These birds are .carnivorous in their fabits^Mia are easily reared. Young -birds, if raised by handpshould be fed on milk-thickened with scalded Indian meal, and, at intervals, a little fresh lean beef. The old birds should be fed on eggs pbtftKfes andihbtiMl never bo exposed to inclemeBt'weather, but when the days are fine'should have plenty-of frfesh air.- They should also be well supplied with fresh water and clean gravel, nor should they ever-be exppsd&tlo the hot sun. With proper care they will live long. They sing by day and night.
Th6 catbird Js a mischidv.dhs littlefeilow, but is an iuccssant songster, and thrives Weil in the cage. Its songs is not positively sweet, but is a kind of jumble of-melodiouS notep. It is an easily reared il IV
The American .robin, one of the best known birds,-is'^w-favdrite for the cage and is well worth the trouble bestowec upon it. His song .is a loud, sonorous whistle. His feeais in sects, fruit and seed., He isi easily taught to whistle tunes, and is generally very^ajii*^/
The wood thrashls seldom kept In' con finement, although it is one of our sweets est singers. It is easily realed, and closely allied to the English song thrush
The Baltimore oriole is found^fromjCajn adaCtoJBrazil, arid.lts jnelloStaoilg. makes it a great favorite. They subsist chiefly on insects, but the food of the mocking bird is adapted to them. They should also be fed occasionally with fruit
The bluebird.is.the harbinger of spring .•lis notels 'fcho'rt'Tind simple, but very
bestowed upon it. The yellow-breasted chat, if well known, would be a great addition to our cages. Ho" possesses not ohJy a sweet song, but a beautiful plumage. His voice is peculiar, and is "marked by ventriloqjiial powers the^birdr being ab]e to throw its notes in all directions, yet still retaining their sweetness:" 'i'$
Among the native birds of India and Africa are the following: The Java sparrow is recommended by beauty of plumage, and not of song. In confinement, tbey should be fed on rice and canary sde, and be well supplied with gravel. They are very docile, and can be taught to perform many tricks.
The Whidah bird is a favorite cage bird, not only for its beautiful plumage, but for its sad and sweet voice. On acr count of their long plumage, they require cage. They should be fed on
millet and canary seed, with an occasidfi al supply of barley meal and green fooa. The amandora is a beautiful cage pel". His brilliant red dolor and sweet softg make him agreeable to all. This bird is only about four inches long, He is generally called the "abordavat."
The Soutb American troopial is not only gifted with song, but with a rich plumage, which somewhat resembles the Baltimore oriole. In confinement he is very docile. His song is a clear anjl powerful whistle, and he should be 'kept In a large cage.
The Brazilian oardinal is a favorite with all. Possessed of a sweet voice, he is also elegant in shape and plumage.
Finally, we have the parrot tribe. .This embraces parrots,, parrokeets, cockatoos, macaws, arratoos, lorys, lorikeets and love bird Most of these birds,- if propei taught, make good tatkers1 tifddgtiof them are kept solely on account of their beautiful plumage. The parrot is a longlived bird, and many queer stories are told at his expense. Mr. Saxe's story of "The Convent'7 will never be forgotten, nor that of the parrot and his feathered friend "Tanico." There' is "bne "parrot story which, we believe, has never been published. A late Bishop of Tennesse had a remarkably fine bird, of which he was very fond. A neighbor of bis also had one, but this bird was'Very profane. The good Bishop thought that by association this evii might be overcome, and so placed the bitdi together, that the bad might turn to good. But it was the old proverb over agiiin~-i-"evil communications corrupt good manners." In less than a week the Bishop's bird was as profane as that of his neighbor. From that time forward the good man would have nothing to do with his old pet, but allowed him to sue the evil "tenor of his way." birds should always have large cages, and should be well cared for. They, are best fed on bread and milk and occasionally a little fruit ^lould be giyen them. These birds are worth from $5 to $30.

They"hi"ve" a ghost in Wilson county, Tenn., which is described by the Lebahon Herald to be a frightful looking object, about four f*et hign, with a. heavy body and red eyes. It has two horns on its head, is dressed in pure white, and makes a noise more terrible than tbat made "by any human agency. A witch doctor named Jones has been succe«ful in filling one oT the smaller sized demons, and is sanguine of ultimate success in riding the neighborhood of the ghost.
