Formerly, before the era of our railroads, the Wabash river was. of much commercial value to Terre Haute, and a consid cable amount of shipping bv steam aud fintboats was done, but of late years, has been .gradujtilyydiminishmyf-uHtiU-now, only a small local business is done, by two or three email steamboats plying between a few towns up and down the river, carrying freight in the interests of tde railroads. It is unfortunate for Indianapolis that the White river cannot boast as much. Lf we hud nothing to disgrace our city more than the failure to make the names ot' oiu streets prominent aud conspicuous, 0 then indeed, should we beentitled to be called tho Bridal City, situated on the edge of a garden like unto Edep,,ajid whose name should be "Paradise" instead of Terre Haute. proportion nearer to the surface as you go north of Brazil. At Brazil and near thft^ft is that tbe iron men of Indiana. Ohio and Pennsylvania are attracted, and where is going up now those two large blast furnaces that Max speaks of, and in addition, a large rolling mill. But the iron ore to be used in these furnaces is to be brought from the Iron Mountains of Missouri, and the iron mines of Lake Superior/ And why Because, 1st, iron ore in only a limited quantity and only about 3d rate quality is to be found near therfe, and 2d,-because on account of this black coal, found only there it is calculated that pig irou can be more economically made, by transporting tbe native ore to where the coal is, than to transport tbe coal to where the iron ore is. At Brazil is found everything requisite for blasting purposes. First, the coal, second the blue liliifr storte in -abundance, third, the fire brick and day. Other things, such as woodaiid water, are also found there more available than at Terre Haute. Now having said thus much in regard to this coal and iron interest, centering as it will un Avoidably aud naturally at Brazil, so far arjbesmelting of the ore is concerned there i* nothing to prevent the pig iron there made, to be used in large quantities in rolling mills and nail factories in Terre Haute. Terre Haute should now be awake to secure a large interest in the manufacturing of iron and nails at this point. Just as the Tjlast furnaces of Pennsylva' nia anl Ohio have supplied Pittsburgh with millions of tuna of-pig metal for her rolling mills, so let tho blast furnaces at Brazil furnish rolling mills at Terre Haute.
