A FINS SiOdT.—Yesterday a gentleman of good address, "wrapped in' the mantle of his own originality," with intellect and joy beaming from hisoeuntenance, was seen trippling along the street Jn almost a fairy-like manner. The ladies— d:»r creatures, who see everything that -4S pretty—observed the aforesaid gentleman, and involuntarily exclaimed '•What a handsome man." "What beautifully flaing garments." The "mantle of origTnallly7' reader, poetically describes the entire suit, which was made at Hartsock & Bannister's Union- Clothing Store.

Gome and fee how beautiful the pr^irie9 are, and what a neat little city has nestled i4*«n their broad bosom. Just now they ore in holiday attire, dressed as a bride for the e'«' morn, awaiting the coming of her beloved.
Terre Haute is in the transition state between town and city!
A
A grrat feature of Terre Haute is the Bosi well. "It smells to heaven it is a gret|t bore at best, a nuisance to the olfactories and of no value to the proprietor thus far. 1 went to the w.el| to learn wbalt.I could of it, but the artist who was in command of tho works was[ of the nonmjmittal, no-you-don't, either, order a can't be pumped any more than a dry well. By a series of leading, questions I learned that the well is now sunk to a depth of over sixteen hundred feet, that oH has heeg tgached in paying quantities, fhow much that is, is luft to the imagination^) and that the ^il^ikjiBt.bejunk to a greater depfF,. This .well has been more than a nine-days' wonder, and it Would be cruel in Mr Bose to stop now. Tbe people want him to see how far he am go, and where he would be when- he got tbera. ^Tbe election here for oity officers was telegraphed over the country as a Democratic victory, which is not the case. The iss ie that defeated tbe Bepublioan candidate for Mayor was purely local. This is clearly shown by the sucoess of the balance of the ticket. The Germans, many of them, bolted the Bepublican ticket, just as in Fort Wayne they bolted the Democratic ticket.
They have a connndrundrum here which is not bad. "Why is the Bepublioan candidate for Mayor's race like General Butler's race on the Jatoes Because
The next election will set all things even here, as every one well understands. Democratic victories are as Dard to find as the milk sickness used to be. In every city where a victory was olaimed, it is prox^Q to be the result of cause* entirely iucal. A great many things will have to be forgotteu before a genuiue Democratic victory is achieved anywhere in Indiana
Much attention is ju-.t now being paid to coal and iron in this part of the State. Conductor Chambers—everybody knows him—a very prince of conductors, told Ui that Eastern capitalists are paying frequent visits to see tue prospect here, and tnat many are making preparations to work both the coal and iron mines more extensively than I had ever thought they eottld be worked. Fow are aware either of the valuo or extent of our coal deposit still fewer know that iron ore can anywhere be found iu the State rich enough to justify working. Gentlemen whose experience is ample, and whose veracity and information is unquestionable, such as Mr. Thomas, of the Indianapolis Bulling Mill, pronounce the coal of tt.is section the. best in the United States lor the blasting furnace. The iron ore being so near the coal miner, pig iron can be produoed at much less expense than at auy other point in the country. A gentleman from Cleveland, Ohio, who is interested both in Pennsylvania and Ohio, in iron mining gave me his opinion of the prospects for iron mining here, that it was much more favorable than any poi,ntJn either, ot those States. He is now engaged in putting up two immense blast furnaces, showing his faith iu his opinion. Indiana, if balf that these men claim is true, will take rank among the first iron and coal producing Stales. This source of wealth being generally unknown, has been little calculated upon, and our own capitalists will find tin-easel yes for behind Eastern men in dovelgp}|rg- this J«frgBtntt«l -*adunfai ling interest.

I admire Terre Haute. Qrecannot do otherwise, for it, is a beautiful and thoroughly enterprising city^ One thing it lack?, which Indianapolis lacks as well, and that is a thorough systerrr of making che'names of the streets prominent, either oh the lamp posts, buildings of corner of thei fenees. It is a disgrace to ahy city ithai strangers have to fely oh the uncertain knowledge of cltisens. Main street here has the cross streets marked in an imperfect way, and there it rests. If the new authorities of Indianapolis do npt have this work of small expense and great utiHty done immediately, they wtil hardly have the opportunity of again failing of their duty anot hor term. As much might be said of he authorities of ,this oity,

odd#,. in Ohio, is, to say the least a pitiful subterfuge tbdt amounts ta—nc thing. What does it signify in what State or eiiy or they may reside, or wnat Country gave them birth? Must these considerations be essential to qualify those gentlemen for the manufacture and commerce in Which they are engaged ?.or to satisfy an intelligent oommunity of their ability as workmen or their integrity as men? The writer has been for many years intimately acquainted with Messrs. A. & G.
